Yes, Windows 11 can receive Bluetooth audio from a phone or tablet, but it is not normally a one-click option in Settings. Microsoft provides the underlying A2DP sink capability, while an application must activate and manage it. For most users, the practical route is a compatible Microsoft Store receiver app, such as Bluetooth Audio Receiver.

The signal path is:

Phone or tablet (Bluetooth source) → Windows 11 PC (Bluetooth receiver) → PC speakers, wired headphones, USB audio, or attached speakers.

What a Bluetooth receiver setup actually does

In the usual arrangement, Windows sends audio to Bluetooth headphones or a speaker. This guide reverses that direction: the phone transmits the music or video soundtrack, and Windows accepts it as the receiver.

  • Source: a phone, tablet, or other device transmitting audio.
  • Sink or receiver: the Windows PC accepting the Bluetooth stream.
  • A2DP: the Classic Bluetooth profile normally used for stereo music and media.
  • HFP/HSP: hands-free and headset profiles intended mainly for calls and microphone use; they are not equivalent to high-quality A2DP stereo.
  • Audio endpoint: the Windows playback device that ultimately produces sound.

Microsoft documents the Windows AudioPlaybackConnection API for this purpose and explains that an application, rather than a universal Settings switch, manages the Bluetooth A2DP sink.

  • Wireless range: Indoors(without obstacles) connect rang up 30-40 ft (10-12 m).
  • Works with most device: Bluetooth enabled device including smartphones, tablets, computers, laptops upon and any powered PC speakers, home stereo systems and A/V receivers.
  • NOTE: This adapter doesn't have built-in battery, power by AC to DC power adapter or USB cable. This product is a bluetooth receiver ONLY, not a bluetooth transmitter. Only to give Bluetooth capabilities to an existing stereo / powered speaker / PA. If you have any problems, please contact us at any time by Amazon Order, and we will speed up the process to resolve the issue.

What you need before starting

  • A Windows 11 laptop or desktop with working Bluetooth hardware.
  • Bluetooth enabled and a current driver from the PC, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer.
  • A phone or tablet that supports Bluetooth audio.
  • A receiver application capable of enabling an incoming A2DP connection.
  • A Windows playback endpoint: built-in speakers, 3.5-mm headphones, USB audio, or connected powered speakers.

A desktop without built-in Bluetooth needs a USB adapter. Do not assume every adapter can make Windows an A2DP receiver: many are intended mainly to connect headphones or speakers to Windows. Check the adapter, driver, and app documentation for sink support.

Set up Bluetooth Audio Receiver

The Store listing currently shows Bluetooth Audio Receiver as a free PC music app. Store availability, publisher information, updates, and compatibility can change, so verify those details on the Microsoft Store before installing. It should be described as a Store application, not automatically as a Microsoft-developed Windows component.

1. Turn on and verify Bluetooth

  1. Open Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Turn Bluetooth on.
  3. If Bluetooth is missing, open Device Manager, expand Bluetooth, and identify the radio.
  4. Use the adapter’s context menu to update its driver, or download the current driver from the PC, motherboard, or adapter manufacturer. Restart Windows afterward.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting instructions cover this process at Bluetooth connected but no sound.

2. Install the receiver app

  1. Open the Microsoft Store and search for Bluetooth Audio Receiver.
  2. Check the publisher, supported Windows version, recent update history, and reviews mentioning Windows 11.
  3. Install and launch the app.

3. Pair the phone with Windows

  1. On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
  2. Select Add device, then choose Bluetooth.
  3. Put the phone into discovery mode if required.
  4. Select the phone or PC entry shown on the other device.
  5. Confirm the pairing code on both screens.

Pairing establishes a relationship, but it may not create an incoming media endpoint by itself; the receiver app still has to activate the sink.

  • EFFORTLESS AUTOMATIC PAIRING: Once you've set it up, the Bluetooth RCA receiver pairs automatically every time you power it on. No more struggling with wires or complex connections. Just turn it on and let the music play.

4. Enable the incoming connection in the app

Open Bluetooth Audio Receiver after pairing. The exact labels can change between Store versions. In the expected workflow, the paired phone appears in the app, you select or enable it, and the app activates Windows as an A2DP receiving endpoint. Start media playback on the phone so the connection becomes active.

5. Choose where Windows should play the received audio

  1. Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select the intended output.
  2. For more control, open Settings > System > Sound and choose the output device.
  3. Raise volume on the phone, Windows, and the physical speakers or headphones.

6. Test with simple local audio

Begin with a locally stored song or a short video. This distinguishes Bluetooth setup problems from streaming-service restrictions, DRM, app-specific routing, network buffering, or muted phone output.

Fix “paired but no sound”

  1. Confirm the receiver app is open and its incoming connection is enabled.
  2. Start playback on the phone and check that the phone is not sending audio to another device.
  3. Select the correct output under Settings > System > Sound.
  4. Check phone, Windows, and physical-speaker volume.
  5. Turn Bluetooth off, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it on again.
  6. Remove the phone under Bluetooth & devices, then pair it again.
  7. Update the Bluetooth driver and restart the PC.
  8. Test another phone or a local audio file.

If the app remains idle, possible causes include pairing before the app was installed, no active phone playback, an unsupported connection mode, another Bluetooth device taking priority, an outdated app, or failure to establish the A2DP media profile. Check the app’s current support information and Store update history rather than assuming Windows itself cannot receive audio.

Improve sound quality and manage delay

A2DP versus hands-free audio

A2DP is designed for stereo media. HFP/HSP is designed for calls and microphone use and commonly sounds narrower or lower quality. If sound suddenly becomes poor, check whether Windows selected a hands-free endpoint or a communications application opened the microphone. Microsoft recommends verifying A2DP support and the selected playback device in its Bluetooth audio troubleshooting guide.

Output format and volume

After an output device is connected, Windows may offer 2 channels, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality) in the device’s advanced format settings. This is a troubleshooting option, not a guaranteed improvement for every receiver, codec, or driver.

Latency and interference

Bluetooth can introduce noticeable delay, particularly with games, instruments, live monitoring, and video. Test a local video before relying on the setup. Keep the devices reasonably close, reduce radio interference, and do not claim aptX or LE Audio benefits unless both endpoints and their drivers support them. Wired audio remains the safer choice for synchronized monitoring and lowest latency.

Can it receive phone calls?

Receiving media through A2DP is not the same as operating as a complete Bluetooth hands-free system. Calls require separate HFP behavior, microphone routing, and support from the phone, Windows, and receiver application. Treat call support as device- and app-dependent rather than a guaranteed feature.

What about LE Audio and Auracast?

LE Audio is a newer Bluetooth system, not an automatic replacement for Classic A2DP reception. Microsoft says Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer, compatible Bluetooth hardware, supported codecs, and manufacturer-supplied drivers are required. LE Audio support was introduced with Windows 11 22H2 and update KB5026446 according to Microsoft’s LE Audio driver documentation.

To check the capability, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and look for Use LE Audio when available. If the control is absent, the hardware or drivers may not support it. Bluetooth LE branding alone is insufficient, and LE Audio capability does not prove that a particular Store receiver app supports LE Audio or Auracast. See Microsoft’s requirements at Check if a Windows 11 device supports Bluetooth Low Energy Audio.

Routing received audio onward to Bluetooth headphones

This is a two-stage path:

Phone → Windows receiver app → Windows audio system → Bluetooth headphones.

It may work, but it adds another wireless link, potential delay, and more output-selection problems. Pairing both devices with the same PC does not by itself guarantee reliable relay behavior.

When dedicated hardware is better

Use a hardware receiver when the target is a stereo receiver, powered speakers, television, or amplifier; when the system should work without a logged-in Windows session; or when consistent pairing and latency matter more than reusing PC speakers.

Option Advantages Limitations
Windows receiver app Usually free or inexpensive; uses existing PC speakers or wired audio Depends on app maintenance, drivers, pairing behavior, and may add latency
USB Bluetooth adapter Adds or replaces unreliable Bluetooth hardware May not support A2DP sink mode; driver quality varies
Dedicated Bluetooth receiver Direct phone pairing; appliance-like operation for speakers or stereos Needs power and an audio cable; does not use the PC’s internal speakers
Wired connection Simple troubleshooting and generally low latency Requires suitable cable and ports
Network audio software Can offer flexible routing over Wi-Fi Not Bluetooth; requires software on both devices and a network

For example, Logitech documents its Bluetooth Audio Receiver connecting to powered speakers through a 3.5-mm auxiliary input at Logitech support. It is suitable for external speakers, not for turning a Windows laptop’s built-in speakers into the receiver.

A 2-in-1 product such as the Avantree TC417 can serve transmitter and receiver roles, but its product page labels it discontinued while also showing purchase information; verify status before buying. LE Audio products such as the Avantree AuraGo address different headphone-receiver use cases and are not replacements for the Windows A2DP sink workflow.

Final recommendation

For occasional phone music through a nearby Windows 11 computer, install a maintained receiver app, pair the phone, activate the incoming connection, and explicitly select the PC’s playback endpoint. For a permanent stereo, TV, or powered-speaker installation, a dedicated Bluetooth receiver is usually more dependable because it avoids Windows app, login, and driver dependencies.
