Sky Stream is the best premium all-rounder, NOW is the most flexible standalone choice, EE TV and Virgin Media suit broadband bundles, and Freely is the strongest free option. In the UK, “IPTV” describes television delivered over an internet connection; it does not make a service legal. This guide compares identifiable services with distribution rights and excludes anonymous “all-channel” subscriptions and pre-loaded streaming devices.

Sky currently lists Essential TV at £15 per month for new customers on a 24-month minimum term, or £18 per month on a 31-day rolling subscription; the page shows a standard rolling price of £21 after the introductory arrangement. Ultimate TV is listed at £24 per month on a 24-month term, with a current rolling price of £38. These are volatile offers, not guaranteed long-term rates.

Who should avoid it?
Choose another service if you only watch occasional sport, need the lowest possible monthly cost, or do not want a minimum term. Sky Stream also depends on a reliable broadband connection; no dish does not mean no internet.

Best use cases
- Occasional sport: a Day Membership can cost less than a full month when you only need a particular event.
- Sky entertainment without a bundle: subscribe to Entertainment or Cinema alone.
- Short commitments: standard memberships can be cancelled, while discounted minimum-term offers have different rules.
Quality and limitations
Boost or Ultra Boost may be required for higher resolution, more simultaneous devices or ad-free on-demand playback. NOW’s terms give connection guidance of 2.5 Mbps generally, 12 Mbps for selected 1080p content with Boost and 30 Mbps for selected 4K HDR content with Ultra Boost: nowtv.com/terms. Best broadband-and-TV bundle: EE TV
EE TV combines live television with services such as NOW, Netflix, HBO Max and Apple TV, plus sport options. Package changes can be made monthly on flexible TV services. The principal product is a broadband-and-TV bundle, so compare the entire contract rather than treating its headline price as television-only. Current offers are listed at ee.co.uk/tv and ee.co.uk/broadband/tv.
Examples shown in 2026 include Full Fibre 100 with Entertainment at £48.99 per month for 24 months and a Full Fibre 500 offer at £38.99. Location, broadband tier, customer status and scheduled annual increases affect the real cost. EE is a good fit when you already want its broadband; it is poor value if you only need a portable TV membership.
Best full bundle: Virgin Media TV, Stream and Flex
Virgin Media suits households within its network footprint that want broadband, a set-top-box experience and premium packs together. Flex is described as including 150+ essential channels, with premium channel packs and streaming subscriptions that can be added or removed every 30 days: virginmedia.com/tv.

A listed example combining Mega TV, Sky Cinema, Sky Sports in HD and M500 broadband costs £78.99 per month for 24 months and states £195 from month 25. That is one bundle illustration, not a general TV price. Check the post-term rate before signing.

Best free legal option: Freely and broadcaster apps
Freely delivers public-service and free-to-air television over broadband on compatible televisions and devices. It is useful for viewers mainly watching BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 content, but it is not a replacement for premium sport or the complete Sky catalogue. Device support, channel availability and guide treatment should be checked on the current platform.
You can also combine BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 and Channel 5 apps with only the paid memberships you actually need. Choosing sport without being misled
No single legal provider automatically includes every major competition. Rights are divided by sport, competition and season.

Films and premium entertainment
Sky Stream has the deepest Sky-led ecosystem, including Sky Atlantic and Sky Originals, with broader services in Ultimate. NOW is the simpler route to Sky Entertainment, Cinema and HBO Max without a full platform. EE and Virgin can offer several streaming services inside a single television interface, but verify whether the included tier contains advertising and whether ad-free, UHD or Dolby Atmos requires an upgrade.

Sky lists an Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos Pack at £6 per month on a 31-day rolling basis and states that not all content is available in UHD or HDR. The page also gives a 30 Mbps minimum for relevant UHD/HDR use: Sky Stream technical details.
Broadband, devices and picture quality
Broadband requirements
- Sky Stream: Sky recommends at least 25 Mbps for Sky Stream, with higher requirements for UHD use.
- NOW: minimum guidance varies by resolution and Boost tier, as set out in its terms.
- EE TV: requires checking EE broadband availability and the exact bundle terms.
- Virgin Media: main TV bundles depend on Virgin Media network coverage.
- Freely: needs a compatible broadband-connected TV or device.
Advertised line speed is not the same as Wi-Fi speed at the television. Router placement, congestion, simultaneous downloads and device age can all cause buffering.
Devices and multiroom
Confirm the current support list for your television operating system, streaming stick, Apple TV or Android TV device, games console, phone and tablet before buying. Check simultaneous streams and whether a box is included, loaned or charged separately. Sky states that Sky Stream requires an HDMI port, supports up to six pucks per household or account and supports up to three Sky Glass TVs.

- Multiply each price by the number of months in the minimum term.
- Add equipment, activation, delivery, UHD, HD, cinema, sports and multiroom charges.
- Separate mandatory broadband from the TV component.
- Check the standard price, annual increases and post-term price.
- Read notice periods, early termination charges and equipment-return rules.
True first-year cost = monthly subscription × months + equipment or activation charges + mandatory broadband − confirmed discounts. A £15 Sky offer, a £7.99 NOW membership and a £48.99 EE bundle cannot be compared as equivalent products without applying this calculation.
Is IPTV legal in the UK?
Licensed internet television and ordinary streaming platforms are legal when the provider has rights to distribute the content. IPTV itself is only a delivery method. Anonymous sellers promising thousands of premium channels, live sport and films for a few pounds are not credible alternatives.
Warning signs of illicit services
- No identifiable company, rights information, terms or refund process.
- “Lifetime” access or every premium channel for an implausibly low fee.
- Payment by cryptocurrency, bank transfer or direct message.
- A preconfigured Fire TV Stick or Android box, unknown APK, M3U playlist or Kodi add-on.
The UK government says streaming devices are lawful for legitimate free-to-air use but become illegal when adapted to provide unauthorised subscription content: gov.uk guidance. FACT also warns about illicit IPTV devices and add-ons at fact-uk.org.uk. Virgin Media’s policy explains prohibited illicit devices at virginmedia.com/legal/tv-fraud-piracy.
A UK TV licence is generally required when watching live television broadcasts or using BBC iPlayer, regardless of whether the signal arrives through an aerial, satellite or internet service. NOW’s specific guidance is at nowtv.com/gb/help/article/do-i-need-a-tv-licence.
Fixing common problems
Buffering on a legitimate service
- Test the Wi-Fi signal beside the television.
- Use Ethernet where practical.
- Pause downloads, cloud backups and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Restart or reposition the router and update the device software.
- Check whether every app buffers or only one service.
- Check the provider’s status information before replacing equipment.
A cheap service disappears
Rights-holder blocking, shutdowns, overloaded servers, payment termination or malware can make an illicit service vanish. Do not hunt for another pirate subscription; switch to an official broadcaster app, NOW, Sky, EE, Virgin or another licensed provider.
