Dragonforging is a separate chance-based upgrade earned when the Arisen is wearing the armor while defeating a qualifying dragon. On Bitterblack Isle, Barroch also offers rarification, a further Dark Arisen progression beyond dragonforging. Armor prices, materials, and stat gains are not universal, so treat every item as its own upgrade project.
This guide shows how to read an armor piece’s starting stats, plan its three standard enhancements, meet dragonforging conditions, and decide when Bitterblack Isle rarification is worth pursuing.

How the three armor-upgrade systems differ
These systems are related, but they are not interchangeable. Paying for a star enhancement does not dragonforge an item, and defeating a dragon does not replace the normal material-and-gold process. Rarification is an additional Dark Arisen service rather than another name for either of the first two systems.

The safest way to avoid wasting resources is to finish the standard star level you can afford, then treat dragonforging and rarification as separate decisions.

Read an armor piece’s base stats before upgrading
Armor lists generally show a zero-star reference: the item’s starting Defense, Magick Defense, and vocation eligibility before any enhancement. That reference is useful for comparing candidates, but it is not a substitute for the item’s own upgrade table. Star-level gains, materials, and prices belong to the individual armor piece.
Defense and Magick Defense
Defense reduces the impact of physical attacks, while Magick Defense addresses magical damage. Compare both values rather than choosing a piece from its physical Defense alone. For example, the armor index lists the Hellfire Helm at 115 Defense and 70 Magick Defense at zero stars. Those figures describe that helm’s starting point; they do not establish the values of other Hellfire pieces or later star levels.
Vocation eligibility
An armor piece can be statistically excellent and still be unusable by your current vocation. Check the eligibility restriction before investing rare materials. A useful comparison records the vocation requirement beside each item’s two base defenses so that a high number does not distract you from a loadout you cannot equip.
Resistances and special bonuses
Base Defense and Magick Defense are only part of the decision. Elemental resistances, status resistance, and any special bonus can matter more than a small numerical difference, particularly in Bitterblack Isle encounters. Record those properties with the zero-star values, then verify whether the item’s individual upgrade entry changes them or only raises its defensive statistics.
Standard enhancement: a practical three-star procedure
1. Inspect the item and its exact tier table
Before spending anything, identify the armor’s current star state, the next tier’s gold price, and every required material. Do not use a price from another armor as a proxy. A listed base value can be dramatically different from the first enhancement fee, and later tiers may introduce new resources.

2. Visit an enhancement provider
Speak to an available enhancement service, select the armor piece, and open the next enhancement tier. In Dark Arisen, Barroch on Bitterblack Isle is an additional option alongside the game’s other enhancement providers. The service screen is the authority for the item you are actually carrying: it should show the current tier, the payment, and the materials needed for the next star.
3. Check the gold and material requirements together
Enhancement requires both money and materials. Having enough gold does not compensate for a missing component, and owning the component does not waive the fee. Confirm the complete list before you commit to a farming trip, especially when the next tier uses an uncommon Bitterblack Isle drop.
4. Use storage intelligently
Required materials may be drawn from storage when your carried inventory is short. You therefore do not need to carry every component in your backpack, but you do need the material somewhere in your shared storage for the service to recognize it. This is especially useful for heavy ores and rare monster drops that you keep out of your active inventory.
5. Repeat for two-star and three-star states
Enhancement advances through one, two, and three stars. Each step is a new transaction with its own price and material list. A piece that is affordable at one star can become expensive or resource-intensive at the next, so review the next tier before assuming that completing the first star makes the rest routine.
6. Remember the jewelry exception
The standard enhancement rule covers weapons and armor, but not jewelry. If an accessory does not appear as an eligible item, that is a category restriction rather than a missing-material problem.

Costs are item-specific: what the published examples show
There is no reliable universal price formula that lets you calculate every armor upgrade from its Defense value. The published examples demonstrate why each item needs its own table.

Later stages can require different materials and may involve gold or Rift Crystals. A Rift Crystal requirement is not interchangeable with a gold fee, and neither should be assumed merely because an earlier tier used one of them. Record the exact currency and quantity shown for your item’s current next step.
Why a universal armor-cost table is misleading
An all-armor table would need verified, item-level entries for every star tier, including material quantities, gold charges, Rift Crystal charges where applicable, vocation restrictions, and any special conditions. The available armor index is a zero-star quick reference, not a complete upgrade database. Use it to shortlist equipment, then verify the armor’s own enhancement information in-game or in an item-specific reference.
Dragonforging: a separate path earned in combat
Dragonforging is not an ordinary paid enhancement. The Arisen must be wearing the item when the qualifying dragon is defeated. Carrying the armor, leaving it in storage, or having another character wear it does not satisfy that condition. Do not treat a dragon encounter as a guaranteed upgrade unless the enemy and the item’s state meet the relevant eligibility rules.
Eligibility and chance vary
The chance of dragonforging depends on the dragon type and the item’s current enhancement state. Some dragon types require the item to have at least one star before it can be dragonforged. The Dragon and the online Ur-Dragon are reported to dragonforge all items equipped by the Arisen at victory. Those outcomes should not be generalized to every dragon encounter.

A reliable preparation checklist
- Complete any ordinary star requirement associated with the dragon you intend to fight.
- Equip the exact armor piece on the Arisen, not merely on a pawn or in a storage chest.
- Confirm that the armor remains equipped through the final victory event.
- Use the result as a separate progression step; dragonforging does not pay the armor’s outstanding standard-enhancement bill.
If the item does not dragonforge, first check the two common causes: it was not worn by the Arisen at the moment of victory, or that dragon’s chance and minimum-star rule did not favor the item. A failed attempt is not evidence that the armor is permanently ineligible.
Rarification on Bitterblack Isle
Dark Arisen adds a progression beyond dragonforging: rarification through Barroch on Bitterblack Isle. It is a further service, not a synonym for a three-star enhancement or a dragonforged state. Because rarification requirements vary by item and stage, inspect the service entry for the armor you intend to improve rather than applying a recipe from another piece.
When rarification makes sense
- You intend to keep the armor for endgame or Bitterblack Isle content rather than replacing it soon.
- The item’s vocation eligibility, resistances, or special bonuses fit your build better than a newer but less suitable drop.
- You have confirmed the required materials and currency and can replace the item if the service consumes a scarce resource.
- You have already considered whether a dragonforged version would meet your needs before committing to the additional Bitterblack Isle progression.
Barroch’s presence does not make every armor piece inexpensive or universally eligible. His service is an additional option for Dark Arisen players, while the actual cost remains tied to the selected item and tier.

Hellfire Armor examples
The Hellfire Armor reference names Rubicite, Maleficent Heart, Phantom Orb, and Vile Wakestone among its relevant upgrade materials. Rubicite is associated with mining in Bitterblack Isle, and Vile Wakestone is associated with Daimon’s second form. These are acquisition contexts, not a universal shopping list: the tier you are attempting determines which of the named materials is actually required and in what quantity.

Verify the tier before farming
Do not spend a long session collecting a rare drop until you have opened the exact next enhancement or rarification entry. A material can be relevant to an armor’s overall progression while belonging to a later tier than the one you are currently purchasing. Keep a written or in-game checklist of the next tier only, then update it after each star.
Use storage to reduce inventory friction
Since enhancement can draw required materials from storage, deposit surplus ores and monster drops rather than discarding them to make room. This also lets you separate upgrade stock from consumables and reduces the chance of selling a material needed for a later tier.
How to compare two armor pieces
Use the following decision order when two items compete for the same slot.

Choose the item you can finish
A lower-cost armor piece at three stars can be more useful immediately than a superior piece stuck at zero stars while you hunt several rare components. Conversely, if an item has exceptional resistances or a vocation-specific bonus, delaying its final tier may be sensible. Make the choice using the next achievable upgrade, not only the best theoretical endpoint.

The service says you lack materials
- Open the exact next tier and compare its list with your inventory and storage.
- Check that you are upgrading armor rather than jewelry, which is excluded from the standard system.
- Confirm that a similarly named material is not being mistaken for the required one.
- Review the quantity, because possessing one copy does not satisfy a larger tier requirement.
You have the materials but not enough money
Material ownership and the gold charge are separate requirements. The Celestial Armor example illustrates this distinction: a listed base cost of 1,760,000 G is not the same figure as its 48,000 G first enhancement example. Use the fee shown for the current tier, not the item’s base listing or another armor’s price.
The armor did not dragonforge
- Verify that the Arisen, rather than a pawn, was wearing it.
- Verify that it was equipped at the victory and not merely carried.
- Check whether the dragon type requires at least one star.
- Remember that many dragon encounters offer a chance rather than the reported guaranteed result associated with The Dragon and the online Ur-Dragon.
Barroch does not offer the expected result
Barroch provides an additional Dark Arisen enhancement service, including rarification, but the armor and its current state still determine the available options. Select the exact item and read its displayed requirements; do not assume that a service available for one Bitterblack Isle piece applies to every piece.
A low-waste upgrade workflow
- Shortlist by use: filter armor by vocation, Defense, Magick Defense, resistances, and special bonuses.
- Record the zero-star baseline: write down the item’s starting values, such as the Hellfire Helm’s 115 Defense and 70 Magick Defense, so later comparisons are meaningful.
- Inspect the next tier: note the exact gold, Rift Crystal, and material requirements shown for that armor.
- Check your stock: include storage because eligible materials can be drawn from there.
- Buy stars deliberately: complete one, two, and three stars only when the next tier supports your build and budget.
- Prepare for dragonforging: meet any minimum-star rule and equip the armor on the Arisen before the qualifying victory.
- Evaluate rarification: on Bitterblack Isle, ask Barroch for the item-specific further progression and compare its cost with replacing the armor.
What the available armor references can—and cannot—tell you
The broad armor index is valuable for initial comparisons because it lists zero-star Defense, Magick Defense, and vocation eligibility. It does not provide a complete universal catalog of every armor’s three star values, material quantities, gold charges, Rift Crystal charges, dragonforging outcomes, and rarification requirements. Presenting one would create false precision.
Use published item pages as a starting point, then verify the exact armor and tier in your game. This is particularly important for Bitterblack Isle materials and late-stage services, where a remembered recipe from another item can send you toward the wrong enemy, mining area, or currency requirement.
