Use a fixed prompt structure, clear reference images, exact text instructions, and small follow-up edits. Nano Banana 2.1 can produce more controlled, repeatable-looking images, but Google’s documentation does not promise pixel-identical or deterministic results. Treat consistency as preserving the important subject, composition, style, and wording while deliberately changing only what you ask to change.
What “consistent results” means with Nano Banana 2.1
Consistency is not the same as asking for the same image again and expecting identical pixels. It means that the elements that define a series stay stable: the character’s identity, an object’s design, the camera position, the lighting language, the color palette, the typography, or the layout. Other elements can vary when you request a variation.

The practical method is to turn your visual intent into explicit constraints, ground recurring subjects with references, and edit one variable at a time.

Do not describe the model as guaranteeing identical output. The official guides describe techniques that improve control and consistency, while the reviewed documentation does not establish a deterministic reproduction mode, a seed control, or a success-rate benchmark.

Know the model’s current capabilities and limits
Google Cloud’s Gemini Nano Banana 2.1 specification lists the model as generally available, with a release date of October 6, 2026; that page was updated October 12, 2026. Features and quotas can change, so confirm the current model documentation when building an API workflow.

Build every prompt from the same six-part recipe
A repeatable prompt format makes omissions easier to spot. Write the parts in this order, then remove anything that is not relevant.

1. Name the subject and action plainly
Open with what the image contains and what is happening. A useful starting formula from Google’s consumer guidance is: “Create an image of [subject] [action] in [scene].” Replace vague nouns with visible facts.
- Weak: “A nice travel photo.”
- Stronger: “Create a documentary-style photograph of a yellow sea kayak gliding past black volcanic cliffs.”
- For a person, identify clothing, age range, pose, and activity only when those details matter to the image.
Use one sentence to establish the primary subject before adding atmosphere or backstory. This gives the model a clear visual anchor.
2. Set the frame and viewpoint
Specify the subject’s position, foreground and background layers, camera height, angle, and crop. Concrete directions such as “low angle,” “overhead view,” “three-quarter portrait,” or “centered with negative space on the left” are more actionable than “make it cinematic.” Include the intended aspect ratio, for example “vertical 9:16 social post” or “wide 4:1 banner.”
Describe spatial relationships, not just a list of objects: “Place the bicycle in the lower right; leave dark-blue negative space in the upper left; keep the wall lines receding toward the center.” This reduces accidental crowding and gives later edits a stable composition to preserve.
3. Describe the visual treatment with observable details
State the medium or rendering approach, lighting direction, palette, texture, and realism level. Broad adjectives are less useful on their own. Replace “beautiful light” with “soft window light from camera left, gentle shadows under the chin, muted cream and sage palette.” Replace “high quality” with a visible treatment such as “crisp screen-print shapes, limited ink colors, and subtle paper grain.”

Separate style from subject. A character reference can preserve identity while the style instruction controls whether the result looks like a studio photograph, editorial illustration, watercolor, or product render.
4. Write visible wording exactly
Put every required word in quotation marks and specify its typeface character, size relationship, color, alignment, and location. For example: The sign reads "OPEN LATE" in large white condensed sans-serif letters, centered above the door. If capitalization, punctuation, or line breaks matter, state them explicitly.
Do not bury essential wording in a paragraph of mood references. Keep it in a dedicated sentence so you can correct the text without changing the rest of the image.

Upload a clear reference image when a character, product, prop, or distinctive garment must recur. Give it a stable name such as “Mira” or “the red commuter bicycle,” and use that exact name in later turns. Explain whether the reference controls identity, shape, color, markings, or all of those attributes.
Use references that show the relevant feature clearly. A face reference should not be hidden by sunglasses if facial identity matters; an object reference should show its silhouette and distinctive details. Avoid uploading several conflicting references for the same subject unless you explain which one has priority.
6. Iterate in small, explicit steps
Generate a first pass, identify the single most important defect, and request that change while naming the elements to preserve. A focused instruction is easier to evaluate than a complete rewrite:
Keep Mira’s face, hairstyle, red coat, and the camera position unchanged. Replace only the rainy street with a sunlit park. Preserve the 9:16 crop and the soft three-quarter lighting.

This is a practical editing pattern, not a guarantee that every protected element will remain mathematically unchanged. If several details drift, restate the most important anchors in the next turn rather than adding a long list of unrelated demands.
Use this reusable prompt template
Create [image type] of [subject] [action] in [scene]. Composition: [placement, foreground/background, viewpoint]. Style: [medium and visual references]. Lighting and color: [specific choices]. Include [exact quoted text] in [typography and placement]. Aspect ratio: [ratio]. Use [reference name/image] for [identity or object fidelity].Keep the template as a master brief for a series. When making a variation, copy the unchanged portions and alter only the field that should change. This prevents accidental style, camera, or identity drift between prompts.
Example: a controlled first prompt
The following prompt combines the six parts without relying on vague quality terms:
Create a vertical 9:16 editorial illustration of a red bicycle leaning against a rain-wet blue tile wall at dusk. Composition: place the bicycle in the lower right, viewed from a slight low angle, with open dark-blue space in the upper left. Style: restrained screen-print shapes, crisp edges, and subtle paper grain. Lighting and color: warm amber reflections in the pavement, cool navy shadows, and no neon colors. Include the exact words "NIGHT RIDE" in cream block lettering at the upper left. Use the uploaded bicycle photo as the object reference.Notice that the prompt defines the object, location, viewpoint, empty space, rendering method, light, palette, text, and reference role. If the second image should show a dry morning rather than dusk, change the weather and light while explicitly preserving the bicycle, wall, camera angle, placement, and lettering.

Prepare the reference set
- Choose a clear image with the subject unobstructed and well lit.
- Upload the image before the first generation or in the editing turn where the subject is introduced.
- Assign a stable name and define the attributes that must persist: face, hairstyle, coat, logo, proportions, color, or material.
- Use the same name and the same attribute order in every later prompt.
For a multi-character scene, identify each person separately and state their positions. For products or props, describe which markings are non-negotiable. The documented reference limits are model-specific; staying within them gives the model a clearer set of priorities than flooding a prompt with loosely related images.
Write preservation instructions before the requested change
Start an edit with “Keep…” or “Preserve…” and list the identity and framing anchors. Follow with “Change only…” and name the new element. This order makes the intended boundary unambiguous:
Keep Arun’s facial features, green jacket, hand position, and the original lens perspective. Change only the background from a subway platform to a quiet library. Preserve the same warm side light and square crop.Separate identity drift from style drift
If the face or object changes, strengthen the reference and identity language. If the subject stays recognizable but the rendering changes, repeat the medium, palette, and lighting clauses. Fix one type of drift at a time so you can tell which instruction worked.

Get more accurate words in generated images
Text is a special case because a visually convincing image can still fail if one character is wrong. Put the required copy in quotation marks, specify exact capitalization, and describe where it sits relative to a known object. Include a typographic role rather than only a font name: “large condensed sans-serif,” “small italic caption,” or “two centered lines in cream block lettering.”
Google’s image-generation documentation gives this advice: “When generating text for an image, Gemini works best if you first generate the text and then ask for an image with the text.” Use that as a two-stage workflow when wording is critical: first establish the exact phrase, then request the visual treatment and placement.
- Write the final wording in a short, unambiguous instruction.
- Generate the image with the wording and its position stated separately from the style description.
- Inspect every letter, numeral, apostrophe, and line break.
- If only the wording is wrong, ask for a text-only correction while preserving the layout, subject, and lighting.
For long paragraphs, dense menus, or legally exact copy, plan a compositing step outside the image model. Nano Banana 2.1 can improve text rendering, but the documentation does not promise perfect transcription for every length or typeface.
Control composition, style, and variations without losing the anchor
Composition controls
Use one sentence for the frame and another for the subject’s placement. State what should remain empty. Negative space is especially important for thumbnails, posters, and social cards because it reserves room for a headline or interface element.
Style controls
Specify a medium and physical qualities: “gouache with visible brush edges,” “matte product photograph with controlled reflections,” or “flat vector-like shapes with no photographic grain.” If you use a visual reference for style, say that it controls treatment rather than subject identity.
Variation controls
Ask for one deliberate axis of variation: “make three weather variations,” “change the jacket from red to mustard,” or “move the subject from lower right to center.” Keep the master description unchanged and enumerate the variant. Because the API may not always return the exact number of images requested, design your application or review process to accept the result count it actually returns.

- Make a specification. Write the subject, identity anchors, composition, style, lighting, palette, text, and ratio before generating.
- Create a baseline. Use the complete prompt and save the resulting image with the prompt that produced it.
- Inspect by category. Check identity, geometry, wording, lighting, color, and unwanted objects separately.
- Choose one priority. Fix the largest visible problem first; do not combine a camera change, wardrobe change, and text rewrite in one turn.
- Protect invariants. Name the features that must remain unchanged, then state the single permitted change.
- Compare versions. Keep the baseline and edited image together so drift is visible rather than judged from memory.
- Lock the approved brief. Once a version works, copy its successful prompt as the starting point for the next variation.
For a campaign or story sequence, maintain a short “anchor sheet” containing the stable character names, reference images, camera language, palette, and typography rules. Each new scene can add its own action and setting without rewriting those anchors from memory.
When to use Search or Image Search grounding
Grounding can help when a prompt depends on real-world visual context, such as a landmark, historical object, or current setting. State what the grounded material should establish and what it should not change. For example, ask it to use a landmark’s recognizable facade while retaining your specified low-angle composition and limited palette.
Do not assume that web grounding can supply a real person’s photograph. Google’s current documentation says real-world images of people found through web search are not supported for grounding with Nano Banana 2.1. Use an authorized reference image for a person’s identity and describe the desired scene separately.
Choose a practical access route
Nano Banana 2.1 is available through consumer Gemini experiences and through developer or cloud platforms. The right route depends on whether you need a conversational workspace or programmatic controls.

Those capabilities make a careful prompt more effective, but they do not turn natural-language generation into a deterministic renderer.
A reliable workflow therefore measures success by the invariants you define: Is the same character recognizable? Is the product’s distinctive geometry intact? Is the requested phrase correct? Did the camera and empty space stay where you specified? If one answer is no, make the next prompt narrower instead of adding more decorative language.
