Riftstones are gateways to the Rift, Dragon’s Dogma 2’s pawn network. Touch one to search for support pawns, hire or dismiss them, set pawn quests, or recall a Main Pawn that has become forfeit. Settlement Riftstones offer the widest search tools; hired pawns keep the level they had when recruited, so replacing them as your party advances is part of normal party management.
What a Riftstone does
A Riftstone is a gateway to the Rift, the realm that pawns cross while moving between worlds. When the Arisen touches one, the game opens the Rift’s pawn-management functions. From there you can recruit support pawns, dismiss current hires, set a quest for your own pawn, and recover a Main Pawn whose status has become forfeit.

Riftstones are not multiplayer lobbies. Dragon’s Dogma 2 has no online co-op, and another player cannot directly join your game. Instead, players share pawns asynchronously: your Main Pawn can accompany another player’s party, return with knowledge and rewards, and you can hire pawns shared by other players.

You will encounter your first Riftstone at Borderwatch. After that, stones appear in settlements, major cities, ruins, towers and wilderness areas. The type of stone affects how you search rather than changing the basic interaction: touch it to enter the Rift.

Settlement and Grand Riftstones
Settlement Riftstones provide the broadest pawn-search filters. Examples include the stones at Melve, Border Checkpoint, Nameless Village, Sacred Arbor and Arborheart, Moonglint Tower, Agamen Ruins, and Volcanic Island.
The largest versions are Grand Riftstones. The Grand Riftstone of Vermund is inside the Vernworth Pawn Guild; the Grand Riftstone of Battahl is in Bakbattahl; and the Grand Riftstone of the Shrine is in southern Vermund. These are convenient places to make a deliberate party search because you can filter by vocation, inclination and quest knowledge before reviewing individual pawns.

Forgotten Riftstones
Forgotten Riftstones are found away from settlements. Activating one for the first time rewards Rift Crystals. Some wilderness stones also summon pawns with a specific inclination, which can be useful when you want a particular behavior without browsing a large settlement list. Their remote placement makes them exploration discoveries rather than your main replacement point for a party.

How to hire a guest or support pawn
A guest pawn is a support pawn temporarily added to your party. You can recruit one through a Riftstone search or by speaking to a wandering pawn in the field.
Hiring through a settlement Riftstone
- Approach any Riftstone and touch it to enter the Rift.
- Open the pawn-search option.
- Apply the filters that matter for the job you need. Settlement stones can filter by vocation, inclination and quest knowledge.
- Inspect each candidate’s vocation, level, quest knowledge and quoted Rift Crystal cost.
- Confirm the hire after checking that the pawn fits your party and that you can pay any listed cost.
Pawns at or below the Arisen’s level are free to hire. A pawn above your level costs Rift Crystals, and the price rises as the level difference increases. The game displays the cost before confirmation, so check the quote rather than assuming every high-level pawn has the same price.

Hiring a wandering pawn
Pawns also walk the roads and wilderness. Speak to a wandering pawn and choose the hire interaction to add it without opening a Riftstone search. This is useful when you need an immediate replacement, discover a pawn whose vocation complements your party, or find one carrying relevant quest knowledge while travelling. Because a field hire does not give you the same broad search interface, inspect its level and abilities carefully before committing.
What the Rift Crystal charge means
Rift Crystals are the currency used for above-level support pawns. The charge is tied to the level relationship between the Arisen and the pawn, not a permanent fee attached to that pawn. At-or-below-level hires cost nothing; the further a pawn is above your level, the more Rift Crystals the game requests. Forgotten Riftstones can also award Rift Crystals when first activated.
How to choose a pawn that will stay useful
Level is only one part of a good hire. Use the search and inspection screens to match the pawn to a specific gap in your party.

| Current equipment and skills | Can it survive and perform immediately? | A nominally suitable vocation is not enough if the pawn’s setup does not fit your encounter. |
Read the quoted Rift Crystal cost as part of the decision. A higher-level pawn may offer immediate power, but the fee can be substantial when the level gap is large. A free pawn near your level may be the more efficient choice, especially when you expect to replace the hire soon.
Support pawns do not level with you
A hired support pawn keeps the level it had when you recruited it. It does not gain levels alongside the Arisen. This fixed level is the main reason a pawn that was excellent several hours ago can become a liability later.

Check your support pawns after major progression, not only when one dies. If the party has outgrown a hire, return to a Riftstone or speak to a replacement in the field. You can dismiss the old pawn, search for a better level and role fit, and continue without treating the original hire as a permanent companion.
Your Main Pawn is different: it is your own persistent companion and is not a temporary guest hire. The level-management rule above applies to support pawns recruited from the Rift.
How to dismiss a hired pawn
Dismiss a support pawn through pawn or party management when you want to replace it, free a party slot, or finish using its quest knowledge. The dismissal flow also handles ratings, gifts and the pawn’s carried items.
- Open pawn or party management while the support pawn is in your group.
- Choose the support pawn you want to remove and select the dismissal command.
- Give the pawn a rating when prompted.
- Optionally choose a gift for its owner.
- Confirm the dismissal.
Any items the support pawn is carrying are moved to the Arisen’s storage when the pawn leaves. Check storage after dismissal if you handed the pawn loot or equipment during the journey; the items do not remain in the dismissed pawn’s inventory for you to collect later.
Ratings and gifts
The dismissal screen lets you rate the pawn and send an optional present to the player who owns it. A gift is not required to complete the dismissal. Capcom Support explains that you can send a gift to a player online by leaving a support pawn with a present before dismissing it from your party. Treat the gift as a way to thank the owner or pass along a useful item, not as a requirement for hiring or returning the pawn.

How to recover a forfeited Main Pawn
If your Main Pawn becomes forfeited, touch any Riftstone. The stone recalls the Main Pawn to your world. You do not need to locate the specific stone where the pawn disappeared, and a Grand Riftstone is not required.
After the recall, use the Riftstone normally for pawn management. A forfeited Main Pawn is not the same as a dismissed support pawn: dismissal removes a guest from your party, while touching a Riftstone restores your own Main Pawn.
Online, offline and platform limits
Network features must be enabled for online pawn functions. Capcom Support says other players around the world can hire your Main Pawn after it has shared in your adventures, allowing pawn sharing even though the game has no online multiplayer.
Pawn hiring is same-platform only. A player can hire a pawn shared by someone using the same platform, but cross-platform pawn hiring is not supported. If a friend’s pawn does not appear, confirm that both players are on the same platform and that network features are enabled.

Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming a hired pawn will level up
It will not. Support pawns retain their recruitment level. Replace them when their level or capabilities no longer match the Arisen’s progression.
Spending Rift Crystals without checking the level gap
Only above-level hires require Rift Crystals, and the price rises with the difference. Inspect the quote before confirming and consider a free pawn at or below your level when the role is otherwise comparable.
Looking for the Main Pawn at the wrong location
A forfeited Main Pawn is recalled by touching any Riftstone. You do not have to retrace the route or return to a particular city.
Expecting cross-platform or real-time co-op
Pawn sharing is asynchronous and same-platform. The game does not support online multiplayer, so another player cannot enter your active world as a controllable party member.
Leaving valuable items on a pawn before dismissal
Dismissal moves the pawn’s carried items to your storage. Check storage after confirming the dismissal instead of expecting the items to appear on the ground or remain on the pawn.
