A practical starting point is to keep the Hero and choose three companions to cover different jobs: a dependable attacker, a healer and a character who adds utility or flexibility. A Warrior, Priest and Mage is a familiar balanced setup; if you want to include the remake’s new Monster Wrangler, that vocation can contribute both attacks and healing. Neither lineup is mandatory. Choose for the kind of support you want, and remember that supporting characters can change vocations later.

What’s a good starting party in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake?

Your active party can have up to four characters: the Hero and three companions. Near the start of the game, you create the supporting group at Patty’s Party Planning Place. Nintendo describes choosing three allies, and Square Enix’s lead producer, Masaaki Hayasaka, identifies Patty’s as the place where you create the team.

For a first playthrough, think in terms of coverage rather than searching for a supposedly perfect lineup. You want characters who can handle routine damage, help the party recover and provide a useful additional contribution. A balanced Warrior, Priest and Mage group is one straightforward choice: Nintendo identifies those as available vocations, and a GameFAQs walkthrough describes the trio as balanced. It is a recommendation, not an official ranking or a requirement for success.

Another useful template is one physical attacker, one dedicated healer and one utility character. The names in that template are flexible. A Warrior or Martial Artist can fill the attacker slot; a Priest or Sage can fill the healer slot; and a Thief, Merchant or Monster Wrangler can be considered for utility, according to examples in the GameFAQs walkthrough. These are role-based suggestions, not a claim that every vocation performs identically or that each choice is equally suited to every player.

Use a quick coverage check

  • Damage: Decide who you want to rely on for routine offense. A Warrior or Martial Artist is a suggested physical-attacker option.
  • Recovery: Decide which companion will provide the party’s healing coverage. A Priest or Sage is a suggested healer option.
  • Flexibility: Use the remaining slot for utility or a second contribution you value, rather than choosing a duplicate role by default.

These questions help you spot a gap in the team before you confirm your choices. They do not require you to predict every later encounter or optimize for an endgame build.

Which vocations should I pick?

A vocation is more than a label: it affects what a character can learn, how their attributes grow and what equipment they can use. Hayasaka explains those three effects in Square Enix’s producer feature, published on PlayStation.Blog on September 3, 2024. Because vocation shapes several parts of a character, choose with both the job you want them to do and the kind of development you want in mind.

Vocation choice Beginner role to consider What the available guidance establishes
Warrior Attacker The GameFAQs walkthrough offers Warrior as an attacker option. Nintendo confirms the vocation is available.
Martial Artist Attacker The GameFAQs walkthrough offers Martial Artist as an attacker option.
Priest Healer The GameFAQs walkthrough offers Priest as a healer option. Nintendo confirms the vocation is available.
Sage Healer The GameFAQs walkthrough offers Sage as a healer option.
Mage Part of a familiar balanced starting lineup Nintendo confirms the vocation is available, and the GameFAQs walkthrough describes Warrior, Priest and Mage as a balanced trio. The cited guidance does not specify a separate role breakdown for Mage.
Thief or Merchant Utility The GameFAQs walkthrough lists each as a utility example; it does not establish that one is universally preferable.
Monster Wrangler Utility or flexible contribution The remake adds this vocation. Square Enix’s producer feature describes Monster Wrangler abilities that can attack multiple enemies and help heal the party.

Use the table as a way to compare possibilities, not as a tier list. The available official material explains how vocations affect characters and highlights the Wrangler’s capabilities, but Square Enix does not endorse a best party. Your choice should reflect what you want the group to do and which kinds of characters you would enjoy bringing along.

Should I include the Monster Wrangler?

Include a Monster Wrangler if you want to try the remake’s added vocation or value a character who can contribute in more than one way. In the PlayStation.Blog feature, Hayasaka says Monster Wranglers can use “awesome attacks that hit multiple enemies at once” and “helpful heals” that can help the party recover. That makes the vocation a reasonable flexible pick when you are planning coverage.

Those examples do not establish that a Wrangler replaces a dedicated healer, outperforms another vocation, or is essential to a beginner party. If you prefer a more familiar lineup, leave the new vocation out and use another utility option—or choose the Warrior, Priest and Mage combination. If you do add a Wrangler, think about the rest of the party’s needs rather than assuming the character’s two kinds of contribution settle every role question.

How should I think about personalities?

Personalities influence how a character’s attributes rise as they level. The GameFAQs walkthrough describes each vocation as having baseline growth and personalities as shifting those growths positively or negatively. In practical terms, personality is one way to tune development over time; it is not a substitute for choosing vocations that give the party the coverage you want.

For a first run, do not delay assembling your party while trying to find a perfectly optimized personality recipe. Pick a workable group of roles first. Personality choices can be treated as a refinement to growth, rather than a test you must pass before starting. The available guidance does not identify a single personality as best for every vocation or party plan.

Can I change a character’s vocation later?

Yes. According to the GameFAQs walkthrough, a supporting character can change vocation at Alltrades Abbey after reaching level 20. The Hero cannot change vocation. That gives you room to respond to the party you have actually built instead of trying to engineer every later combination before you begin.

A vocation change has a meaningful short-term cost. The walkthrough says the character returns to level 1, their experience resets and their stats are halved, while spells and abilities they have learned are retained. Changing vocation can therefore help create a hybrid character, but the character must make progress again from a lower level. Treat the change as a later build decision, not a free swap or a compulsory step for every companion.

When a change may make sense

  • You have played long enough to identify a role or ability your party is missing.
  • You want to experiment with a hybrid build and are prepared for the temporary progression setback.
  • You are comfortable rebuilding the character’s levels rather than relying on their current stats immediately.

If you are unsure what your group needs, keep the starting vocations and learn how the party feels in play before making that commitment. The Hero’s vocation is fixed, so plan any changes around supporting characters.

Three beginner party plans

Familiar balance: Warrior, Priest and Mage

Choose this if you want a straightforward starting lineup with three vocations named in Nintendo’s official descriptions. A GameFAQs walkthrough calls this trio balanced. It is a sensible default for a player who would rather begin with a familiar composition than build around the remake-specific vocation.

Role coverage: attacker, healer and utility

Choose one of the walkthrough’s attacker examples (Warrior or Martial Artist), one healer example (Priest or Sage), then use the last slot for a utility choice such as Thief, Merchant or Monster Wrangler. This framework makes the job of each companion easy to think about, while leaving room to choose characters whose vocations appeal to you.

New-vocation trial: include a Monster Wrangler

Choose this if trying the remake’s addition matters to you. The producer’s feature establishes that the Wrangler has abilities spanning multi-enemy attacks and healing. Pair that flexibility with companions who cover whichever needs you do not want to leave to the Wrangler. The cited information does not establish one fixed combination as best.

Common first-party mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a guide lineup as a rule: A balanced template is a starting point, not a mandatory composition. The official descriptions do not name a best party.
  • Choosing without considering role coverage: Before confirming companions, consider who will attack, who will help the party recover and what you want the remaining character to add.
  • Over-optimizing personalities before you begin: Personalities affect attribute growth, but the available guidance does not establish one universally correct recipe.
  • Changing vocation as though it has no cost: The GameFAQs walkthrough reports a return to level 1 and halved stats, even though learned spells and abilities remain.
  • Assuming the Hero can change vocation: The walkthrough says the Hero cannot; the later-change option applies to supporting characters.
  • Assuming Monster Wrangler is compulsory because it is new: Its described attacks and healing make it a flexible option, not a requirement.

What to do at the start

  1. At Patty’s Party Planning Place near the start, choose three companions to join the Hero.
  2. Assign each choice a purpose: attacker, healer or utility/flexible contribution.
  3. Pick the familiar Warrior, Priest and Mage trio if you want the walkthrough’s balanced default, or substitute vocations to match your preferences.
  4. Consider Monster Wrangler for the flexible slot if you want to try the remake’s new vocation and its described attack-and-healing abilities.
  5. Start playing before worrying about later vocation changes. Revisit that decision once you know what the party needs and are willing to accept its leveling cost.

The point of these steps is to make a coherent beginning, not to lock you into a perfect build. Supporting characters have a later vocation-change option, while the Hero does not, so a reasonable starting balance is enough to get underway.
