A Dragon Age remaster is not announced or scheduled, but former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah says a three-game collection has been discussed. The catch: turning that idea into a project would be harder than remastering Mass Effect, because the Dragon Age trilogy spans different technology and depends on expertise BioWare may no longer have.
Is a Dragon Age: Origins remaster happening?
There is no established announcement or release date for a Dragon Age remaster. Darrah has described a collection as an idea that came up, not an approved project. In an August 2025 interview reported by Game Informer, he said the idea had been discussed “pretty softly,” adding that “pitched is a massive overstatement.”

Darrah’s enthusiasm should not be mistaken for confirmation. “I honestly think they should do – I don’t think they will, but they should do – a remaster of the first three [Dragon Age games],” he said in that report. The comments establish that he favors the idea and that it was discussed; they do not establish that EA or BioWare formally evaluated, approved, or canceled a finished proposal.
What would a Dragon Age trilogy remaster include?
The concept Darrah discussed would cover the first three main games:
| Game | Original release year |
|---|---|
| Dragon Age: Origins | 2009 |
| Dragon Age II | 2011 |
| Dragon Age: Inquisition | 2014 |
Those years are listed in Game Informer’s 2025 report. The comments do not define what a collection would change: they do not specify a resolution target, gameplay revisions, bundled expansions, or whether the games would be rebuilt or mainly polished.
Why is the Dragon Age remaster harder than Mass Effect Legendary Edition?
Mass Effect Legendary Edition, released in 2021, is the obvious precedent: BioWare’s science-fiction trilogy received a remastered collection. But the games’ technical foundations differ. Reporting by GameSpot says Darrah characterized Origins and Dragon Age II as using related Aurora-derived technology, while Inquisition uses Frostbite. By contrast, the Mass Effect trilogy shared Unreal technology, a factor the reports identify as making that remaster more straightforward.

Shared technology helps, but it does not by itself explain every difference between the projects. The practical issue Darrah emphasizes is the expertise needed to work on the older Dragon Age games. “There’s basically no one at BioWare anymore that understands the Aurora engine,” he said, according to GameSpot’s August 4, 2026 report. That is his assessment as a former producer, relayed by the outlet—not an independent technical audit of BioWare’s staff or tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If Darrah’s account is right, the earliest games are the harder part of the trilogy to bring forward. A team would need people who understand their underlying technology, or would need to develop that expertise, before it could decide how much of each game to rebuild or update. The reporting identifies a specialist-knowledge barrier, but does not establish a production plan, cost, or schedule.

Inquisition adds a separate technology problem
Inquisition is not simply another Aurora-era game: it uses Frostbite, according to the GameSpot reporting. That means a collection would cross more than one engine family. The available reports do not detail the work required to adapt it or say whether its remaster would be more or less difficult than the earlier games.
Outside support is not a complete answer
A specialist external studio could potentially contribute expertise, but the reporting does not identify a studio, a deal, or a confirmed plan to bring one in. Nor does it establish that outsourcing would solve the engine, toolchain, or staffing challenges. Mass Effect’s shared Unreal foundation is a useful contrast, not proof that the same production approach would transfer directly to Dragon Age.

What did Darrah say about EA’s attitude toward remasters?
Darrah also offered a possible business-side explanation for why the idea may not advance. In the August 2025 Game Informer report, he said: “EA’s historically been – and I don’t know why, but they’ve even said this publicly – they’re kind of against remasters.” This is Darrah’s characterization of EA’s past attitude, not a current official policy statement from EA. It does not confirm that EA rejected a Dragon Age collection.

What this means for fans waiting for a remaster
The comparison with Mass Effect Legendary Edition shows that a BioWare trilogy remaster is possible; it does not make a Dragon Age collection inevitable. Darrah has voiced support for the idea and described tentative discussion, while identifying old-engine expertise as a major obstacle. Until EA or BioWare announces a project, there is no confirmed collection to expect or release date to plan around.
