Its creator, developer Michel Johnson, says the writing model runs locally on the Mac; that privacy claim and the app’s compatibility details have not been independently audited in the available source.
Why Michel Johnson built DraftKey
Johnson describes a familiar interruption: he would be writing an email, message, or document, make typos, or get stuck trying to make a sentence sound right—and then leave the text field to ask an AI chat for help. In his October 1, 2026 article on DEV, he writes, “I’d be writing an email, message, document, or whatever else, and I’d either make a bunch of typos or get stuck trying to make a sentence sound right.”

DraftKey is his attempt to keep those small writing interventions inside the Mac workflow already in use. Rather than presenting itself as a separate place to compose, the app is described as working with compatible macOS text fields. That positioning may suit people who want help while writing documentation, email, messages, or other everyday text; those are audiences Johnson names, not measured user groups.
What DraftKey does while you write
Corrects spelling and grammar
According to Johnson, DraftKey can clean up spelling and grammar after the user pauses. The aim is to catch routine errors without requiring a separate editing session.

Suggests the next few words
Its autocomplete feature offers the next few words, which the user can accept with the Tab key. This keeps the suggestion within the current text field rather than requiring a copy-and-paste round trip.
Rewrites selected text on request
Select a passage and ask for a change such as friendlier, shorter, clearer, or more professional wording. Johnson says DraftKey presents the rewritten result for review before insertion, so the user can decide whether to use it.

What the creator says about privacy and internet access
Johnson describes DraftKey as a private AI writing assistant and says its writing model runs locally on the Mac. He says writing is not sent to a cloud AI service for corrections, autocomplete, or rewrites. Those are the creator’s product claims; the available source does not include an independent audit of the app’s data handling.

Local processing does not mean the app is entirely offline. Johnson says an internet connection is needed to download the model, activate a license, and check for updates. The article does not establish further details about telemetry, diagnostics, or other data handling, so the local-model claim should not be read as a complete privacy assessment.
Mac requirements and text-field compatibility
Johnson’s article reports that DraftKey supports Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 or newer. It says AI features need at least 8 GB of memory and that the writing-model download is about 1.12 GB. These are specifications reported by the developer, not independently verified compatibility results.

The app is described as using macOS Accessibility to work with compatible text fields. Secure fields are excluded, and support may vary depending on how an editor implements its text fields. As a result, the fact that an app accepts text on a Mac does not by itself establish that DraftKey will work in it.

License details Johnson provides—and what remains unclear
The creator’s article mentions a lifetime license covering up to three Macs, positioning it as an alternative to a monthly AI subscription. It does not state the current price, refund policy, or detailed license and activation terms. Readers should confirm those details from a current authoritative product source before buying.

Who may find this workflow useful
DraftKey’s described purpose is narrow but practical: help with wording without repeatedly switching from the current Mac text field to a chat window. That may be appealing if routine corrections, short completions, or occasional rewrites are the main need. Someone looking for an independent assessment of writing quality, privacy, performance, or broad app compatibility will not find that evidence in Johnson’s product description.
