To turn off subtitles on a DISH receiver, open Closed Captioning and disable it. On Hopper, Wally, and Joey, the shortcut depends on your remote: press the red color button or press Options twice, then choose Closed Captioning. If captions are playing in DISH Anywhere, switch them off with that device’s playback CC control instead.
Turn off captions on a Hopper, Wally, or Joey
DISH calls subtitles Closed Captioning. Its support instructions offer a remote-dependent quick route, plus a settings menu path if that shortcut is unavailable.

- Press the remote’s red color button or press Options twice. Which shortcut works depends on the remote.
- Select Closed Captioning.
- Turn closed captioning off.
If you cannot open that control with your remote, use the settings path: press Menu once or Home twice, select Settings, then Closed Captioning, and switch the feature off. DISH support describes closed captioning as on-screen text of a program’s audio when enabled.

- Open Caption On/Off, choose the desired setting, and select Done.
DISH says closed captioning is available on its receivers, but the documented menu paths differ between the current Hopper-family interface and legacy ViP receivers. See DISH accessibility support.

Optional remote shortcuts
Some remotes provide another way to toggle captions: DISH’s Wally and Hopper remote guides describe pressing and holding the Diamond button, while the 54 Series remote supports customizable buttons that can be assigned to closed captioning. Button behavior varies, so use these only if your remote guide or configured button confirms the shortcut. DISH also documents a closed-captioning voice command for supported voice-control setups. These are alternatives, not universal controls.
