Choose DP-600 if your work is analytics engineering: preparing data for analysis and building or managing semantic models. Choose DP-700 if your work is data engineering: loading, transforming, orchestrating, monitoring and optimizing data in Microsoft Fabric. DP-800 is a different kind of credential. It covers AI-enabled database development across SQL Server, Azure SQL and SQL databases in Fabric, so it is not a third interchangeable Fabric role exam.
These recommendations rest on Microsoft’s published candidate profiles and exam objectives. Microsoft’s materials do not establish hiring demand, salary effects, pass likelihood or relative difficulty, so this comparison does not rank the three on those points.

What each credential is built to measure
DP-600: analytics assets and semantic models
DP-600 targets people who design, create and manage analytical assets such as semantic models, warehouses and lakehouses. Its largest weight, 45–50%, sits on preparing data: enriching and shaping it so it is usable for analysis. The other two areas cover maintaining the analytics solution, which Microsoft’s examples describe as workspace, item and security controls, governance and lifecycle management, and implementing and managing semantic models, including optimization at enterprise scale. Because semantic-model work is central, DAX is part of the expected skill set alongside SQL and KQL.

DP-700: loading, transforming and running data pipelines
DP-700 is the engineering path. Its three skill groups carry equal weight, 30–35% each: implementing and managing the analytics solution, ingesting and transforming data, and monitoring and optimizing it. The study guide’s examples include orchestration choices and triggers, loading patterns, error resolution and performance tuning. Microsoft names SQL, PySpark and KQL as the relevant languages, so Spark-based work is a larger part of this credential than of DP-600.
DP-800: AI-enabled database development
DP-800 belongs to the database-development family rather than the Fabric role family. The guide describes T-SQL development over structured and semi-structured data, database deployment and security, and AI integration. It expects familiarity with GitHub CI/CD, AI-assisted development tools, embeddings, vectors and models. Its scope spans SQL Server and Azure SQL as well as SQL databases in Fabric, which is why it should be compared with the other two on the nature of the work, not on the word “Fabric” in its name.

How to choose
- Pick DP-600 if your responsibilities centre on semantic models, analytical assets, data preparation for reporting, and analytics security and governance. Expect DAX on top of SQL and KQL.
- Pick DP-700 if your responsibilities centre on data loading, pipelines and orchestration, transformations, platform operations, and Spark or PySpark alongside SQL and KQL.
- Pick DP-800 if you build database solutions and want the AI-enabled scope across Microsoft SQL platforms. Its inclusion of SQL databases in Fabric does not make it a substitute for DP-600 or DP-700.
- If your role straddles analytics and engineering, compare the tasks you actually perform against each set of exam objectives. Microsoft’s published materials do not set an order or prerequisite between these credentials, so you do not need one before another.
Exam format, passing score and renewal
- Length: Microsoft’s certification pages for DP-600 and DP-700 list a 100-minute proctored exam.
- Passing score: Microsoft’s study guides state that a score of 700 or greater is required to pass.
- Cost and availability: Price and scheduling depend on your region. Check the live Microsoft page and the Pearson VUE booking flow before you register.
- Objectives are coverage guides: Microsoft describes the listed bullets as examples of what is assessed, not a promise that every bullet appears on the exam.
- Renewal: Microsoft says associate certifications expire annually and can be renewed through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
Check the objective version before you book
The DP-600 and DP-700 study guides show a skills-effective date of October 19, 2026. Choose the objective version that applies to the date of your scheduled exam, because the objectives are periodically updated. Microsoft also notes that localized exam versions may lag the English update by about eight weeks, although timing can vary. The DP-800 study guide did not establish a comparable language-specific schedule in the material we checked, so confirm its current logistics directly.
