The right children’s headboard is the one that fits the bed you own and can be attached safely to that bed or wall. Settle the mattress width and the attachment method first, then choose the look. A headboard can be charming in a product photo and still be the wrong width, need bolt holes your frame does not have, or call for a wall you cannot drill into.
“Best” does not mean one design wins everywhere. Labels such as low, tall, winged, upholstered, panel, and wall-mounted describe a silhouette and an installation method. They do not rank quality.

Measure the bed before you shop
Work through these steps in order. Most fitting problems come from skipping the first two.
- Measure the mattress width across the head end, not just the nominal size on the label. Then confirm the length so you know the bed size you are buying for.
- Check the bed frame for headboard fittings. Look for pre-drilled bolt holes, brackets, or rails on the bed itself. Your bed’s manual or the manufacturer’s site will show them. If there are none, a bed-attached headboard may not be possible without an add-on kit.
- Measure the wall space above and behind the bed. Note the usable width and height, and mark any light switches, sockets, radiators, windows, or door swings that the headboard would block.
- Compare the listed dimensions with your measurements. Check overall width, height, and depth. Some listings give the headboard size for a specific bed size, so confirm that the listing matches your mattress and not a different one.
- Decide the attachment type (bed-attached, wall-mounted, or free-standing) and confirm the listing includes the hardware you need. The sections below explain each option.
US and UK bed sizes are not interchangeable
If you are shopping across markets, do not match a headboard to a size name alone. A UK single mattress is narrower than a US twin, and a UK small double is narrower than a US full. Typical nominal widths are shown below; they are approximate and vary by manufacturer, so measure your actual mattress.

| Size name | Market | Typical nominal width | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin | US | About 38 in (96.5 cm) | Confirm the listing says twin, not a UK single |
| Single | UK | About 90 cm (3 ft) | Often narrower than a US twin; a US twin headboard may overhang |
| Full | US | About 54 in (137 cm) | Compare against UK small double, which is narrower |
| Small double | UK | About 120 cm (4 ft) | Check the listing’s size against your mattress, not the label |
How the main headboard styles differ
Each style changes how much visual weight the headboard adds and how it sits against the wall. The trade-offs below are general characteristics of each style, not product claims.
| Style | Visual effect in the room | Typical installation | General trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low | Keeps the wall open and the room feeling lighter | Often bed-attached or free-standing | Offers less head support and less of a focal point |
| Tall | Creates a strong focal point and draws the eye up the wall | Usually needs a secure frame or wall fixing | Can overwhelm a small room or a low ceiling |
| Winged | Frames the pillow area and adds a softer, more enclosed look | Bed-attached or free-standing, depending on the model | Wider footprint; check that it does not block a nightstand |
| Upholstered | Soft, cosy, and often the most decorative option | Varies; often free-standing or bed-attached | Fabric shows marks and needs care instructions to be followed |
| Panel | Flat, simple, and easy to match with other furniture | Bed-attached or wall-mounted | Fewer decorative details; style depends on finish |
| Wall-mounted | Looks built into the room; the bed frame carries no headboard load | Uses the wall hardware specified by the product | Only suitable where the wall and hardware are right for the listing |
Attachment types and their failure points
Bed-attached headboards
These bolt to an existing bed frame or to rails that the bed was built to accept. Ashley’s kids’ headboards collection includes examples that require bolts to attach to an existing frame, and its collection advises buyers to measure the mattress before choosing a separate headboard. Whether hardware is included depends on the specific model.

- 4 Pack Headboard Panels: Includes 4 gray peel and stick headboard panels, each 7.8 x 15.7 in. Use together to create a soft padded area behind a bed, sofa, reading corner, or kids room wall
- Soft Foam Wall Padding: Dense foam cushion helps soften everyday bumps near beds, play areas, and seating spaces. Ideal for adding comfort to bedroom walls, living rooms, and children’s rooms
- Upholstered Faux Leather Surface: Modern gray faux leather finish gives the panels a clean upholstered look. Made of thick and dense sponge, high resilience, comfortable and easy to clean, easy to maintain, easy to wipe and maintain for daily home use
- Peel and Stick Installation: Clean and dry the wall, peel off the backing, align the panel, and press firmly. For best adhesion, install on smooth flat surfaces and allow 24 hours to bond before heavy contact
- Use Notes and Support: Not recommended for heavily textured walls, dusty surfaces, wallpaper, or ceilings. Adhesive strength may vary by wall type, paint, humidity, and installation method
- Check: the bolt pattern and hole spacing on your frame against the listing’s instructions.
- Failure point: a headboard bought for one frame may not fit a different bed with similar dimensions.
- Recovery: if hardware is missing, contact the seller with the model number before you drill anything new into the frame.
Wall-mounted headboards
These fix to the wall and do not rely on the bed frame. Pottery Barn Teen’s listing for the No Nails Chloe Dorm Headboard describes D-ring and adhesive mounting options, and it is listed for use over a twin bed. Morris & Co.’s upholstered headboard guide also recommends wall mounting for its larger products. That is the manufacturer’s advice for its own products, not a general threshold for every headboard.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check: the wall type and the hardware the listing specifies. Use the mounting method the product requires, and do not substitute a different fixing without checking the instructions.
- Failure point: the existence of more than one mounting method does not mean every wall or bed suits each one. An adhesive mount may not be right for a surface that is painted, textured, or damp.
- Recovery: if the wall cannot take the listed fixing, choose a bed-attached or free-standing design instead.
Free-standing headboards
These sit against the wall or behind the bed and may not attach at all. They suit rooms where the bed cannot be modified or where a wall fixing is not allowed. Check whether the headboard tilts forward or stays upright without a fixing; a headboard that is not anchored can move when a child climbs on the bed.

Materials and care
Construction varies within every style. Common combinations include polyester fabric over polyurethane foam, faux leather, MDF or engineered wood frames, and solid wood parts. Each material affects weight, durability, and how the headboard is cleaned.
- Fabric-covered upholstery: check whether the cover is removable and whether the listing gives a cleaning method. Spot cleaning is the usual guidance for fabric, but follow only what the product states.
- Faux leather: usually wipes clean, but it may crack under heat or prolonged direct sunlight. Confirm the finish is suitable for a child’s room.
- Engineered wood and MDF: lighter and often more affordable, but moisture can swell the edges. Keep it away from wet areas and check the finish.
- Solid wood: heavier and more stable for bed attachment, though it can be harder to move through a stairway or doorway.
Certifications and testing claims
A certification or testing statement belongs to the product it is printed on. Do not assume it applies to every children’s headboard in the same category. Pottery Barn Kids’ Chloe bed page states that the brand’s juvenile products are tested at third-party CPSC-accredited labs and that this product is GREENGUARD Gold certified. Those statements describe that product line as presented by the retailer. They are not a standard for all headboards.

The Pottery Barn Kids Chloe bed is a different purchase from a separate headboard. It makes sense if you are replacing the bed, not adding a headboard to an existing one.
Sleep safety comes first
A headboard’s appearance does not determine whether a child’s bed is safe. The Abu Dhabi Public Health Center’s child-safety guide covers beds and mattresses, including crib spacing and infant sleep warnings. Its most relevant point for older children is that pillows, covers, and stuffed toys should be kept out of a child’s bed because of suffocation risk. Keep bedding and toys clear of the sleeping area regardless of which headboard you choose.
Infant crib rules do not transfer automatically to older children’s beds, and the guide does not establish that any decorative headboard is safe or unsafe. Use the product’s installation instructions and weight guidance for the headboard itself.

Start with the mattress width, the frame or wall you can use, and the attachment the listing actually supports. Then choose a style for its visual scale. A low panel or winged headboard suits a small room, a tall upholstered one suits a larger room with clear wall space, and a wall-mounted design suits a bed with no frame fittings where the wall can take the listed hardware.
