Confirm that the label on the printer says HP LaserJet P2055dn; the closely related P2050-series models can require different software.
Use HP’s official driver page first
HP printer software is free, so there is no reason to use a third-party driver download site. Third-party packages can be mislabeled, outdated or bundled with unwanted software. On HP Support, search for LaserJet P2055dn Software and Drivers, open the result for the exact model, and use the operating-system selector. Choose both the operating system family and the specific release when HP asks for them. Download only the package HP exposes for that selection.

HP’s support guidance states: “If your operating system is not listed then HP may not provide driver support for your product with that operating system.” That message does not prove the printer cannot work; it means HP is not offering a supported package for that combination. In that situation, use the alternatives in the operating-system sections below rather than installing a random package for another model.

- Read the nameplate or the label on the front of the printer. It must say HP LaserJet P2055dn, not P2055d, P2055 or another P2050-series model.
- Decide whether the printer will connect by USB or through a network. The P2055dn supports both, and the choice affects the port you select during installation.
- Note whether your computer runs 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. On 64-bit Windows, use the matching 64-bit package when HP offers one; HP’s technical reference specifically requires the corresponding 64-bit driver.
- Keep the printer powered on during installation. For network setup, connect it to the same network as the computer and have its network address available if the installer requests it.
Download and install the driver on Windows 10 or Windows 11
1. Select the exact Windows release
- Open HP Support and search for the LaserJet P2055dn Software and Drivers page.
- Choose Windows 10 or Windows 11, then choose the listed version or edition if HP provides a second selector.
- Review the results for a model-specific package. Download the package marked for your system architecture; choose 64-bit on a 64-bit installation.
- Save the installer rather than opening several downloads at once. The file name and package type can change as HP updates the support page, so follow the current description shown there.
2. Run the installer
- Open the downloaded file from your browser’s download list or the folder where you saved it.
- Allow Windows to run the HP installer, then accept the licence terms when prompted.
- Choose a USB or network connection according to how the P2055dn is connected. For USB, connect the cable when the installer asks. For network installation, select the discovered printer or enter its network address.
- Allow the installer to create the printer queue. If Windows asks whether to permit the application through its firewall, permit the installer on the private network used by the printer.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10. Select the P2055dn, open its printer properties, and use the test-page command.
If the installer reports that no printer was found, check the cable, power and network first. A network printer can be visible only when the computer and printer are on the same reachable network. You can also remove a partially created queue from Printers & scanners and run the installer again so it can recreate the port.

What to do when HP has no model-specific Windows package
When the P2055dn page does not show a dedicated package for your Windows release, try HP’s Universal Print Driver. HP support guidance identifies it as compatible with the P2055 over USB and network connections and with both PCL and PostScript workflows. A universal package is not the same as a model-specific installer: it may expose fewer printer-specific tools, but it can provide normal printing when a dedicated package is unavailable.
- On HP Support, search for the HP Universal Print Driver and select the package matching your Windows architecture.
- Choose a PCL package for ordinary office printing when your existing workflow is PCL-based. Choose the PostScript universal package when your applications or print files require PostScript.
- During setup, select the existing USB port or create a network port for the P2055dn. Do not create a second queue accidentally if Windows already lists the same printer.
- Print a test page and then check a representative document containing fonts, graphics or duplex pages before removing the old queue.
The P2055 documentation lists HP PCL 5 Universal Print Driver, HP PCL 6, HP PostScript Universal Print Driver and an XPS driver among the available families. The best choice depends on the language used by your applications and the package HP currently offers for your Windows version; the documentation list is not a promise that every family remains available for every current release.
Install the HP LaserJet P2055dn on Linux
Linux support follows the distribution’s printing stack rather than a single Windows-style executable. OpenPrinting currently identifies hplip as the recommended driver for the P2055dn and hpcups as the default CUPS Raster driver. OpenPrinting also notes that older HPIJS support has been discontinued.

- Use your distribution’s software manager to install its HPLIP and CUPS integration packages when they are available. Package names and versions vary by distribution.
- Open the desktop printer settings or the CUPS administration interface and choose to add a printer.
- For USB, select the detected P2055dn. For networking, select the discovered queue or provide the printer’s network address.
- When a driver list appears, choose the HP LaserJet P2055dn entry using hpcups/HPLIP. Do not select HPIJS, which OpenPrinting lists as discontinued.
- Print a test page, then test the paper sizes, duplexing and page-description features your work requires.
If your distribution does not package HPLIP or does not list the P2055dn, check the distribution’s supported repositories and the current OpenPrinting entry before trying a legacy package. A package intended for another distribution can fail to install even when the printer model is correct.
Mac, Unix and Citrix: interpret the documentation carefully
P2055-series documentation lists Macintosh, Linux, Unix and Citrix environments in addition to Windows. Older specifications mention Mac OS X 10.3.9 through 10.5 and Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003 and Vista. Those versions are historical context, not evidence of current support. For a modern Mac or Unix system, first check whether HP’s selector lists the operating system; if it does not, HP may not provide a supported package.
For Citrix deployments, install the printer components supported by the server and client versions in use, then publish the queue according to the organization’s print policy. The P2055 documentation confirms that Citrix was included in the product’s supported-environment material, but it does not establish compatibility with every current Citrix release.

Troubleshoot installation and printing problems
The printer does not appear in the installer
- Confirm the exact P2055dn model and make sure it is powered on.
- For USB, try another cable or USB port and reconnect only when the installer requests it.
- For networking, verify that the computer and printer are on the same network and that the printer has a reachable address.
- Remove duplicate or failed queues in the operating system’s printer settings, then rerun the correct installer.
The driver installs but pages remain in the queue
Open the queue and cancel stalled jobs, then restart the print service or reboot the computer and printer. Check that the queue points to the actual USB port or network address rather than an old port left by a previous installation. If the problem began after changing driver families, create a separate test queue with the model-specific package or the appropriate PCL/PostScript universal package.
Text prints but graphics, fonts or duplexing are wrong
This usually indicates a mismatch between the driver language and the application’s output. Test the other supported family offered for your system: PCL for a PCL workflow, PostScript for PostScript output, or the Linux hpcups path under CUPS. Verify the paper size and duplex settings in both the application and the printer preferences.
Windows reports that no compatible driver exists
Return to HP’s selector and check the operating-system version and architecture. A 64-bit Windows installation needs the corresponding 64-bit driver when one is offered. If HP does not list your operating system, use the documented Universal Print Driver option only when HP provides it for that system; otherwise, Windows may have no supported HP package for the combination.

Safety, updates and toner considerations
Download software only from HP or your operating system’s trusted package repository. Keep the downloaded file until the test page succeeds, then remove duplicate installers you no longer need. Driver availability can change as HP updates its selector, so recheck the page whenever you reinstall Windows or move the printer to another computer.
The relevant consumable is black LaserJet toner, not an ink cartridge. One HP specification identifies an approximately 11,000-page black original cartridge supplied with the printer. Actual yield depends on page coverage, print settings and other operating conditions, so treat that figure as a rated specification rather than a guarantee for every workload.
