It lets a DirectInput gamepad, joystick, wheel or pedal set appear to a Windows game as an Xbox 360-style XInput controller. It does not supply a physical controller; your connected device remains the source of the input.
Current x360ce 4.x uses the ViGEmBus virtual gamepad driver. You normally extract x360ce, configure it outside the game folder, keep it running in the notification area and then launch a game configured to accept XInput devices.

What x360ce.exe does
Many PC games are written for Microsoft’s XInput interface, which is the input model used by Xbox-style controllers. Older or unusual USB controllers often expose only DirectInput, or report buttons and axes in a layout the game does not understand. x360ce translates that physical device into an emulated Xbox 360 controller.
The translation includes button assignments, analog axes, triggers, hats and other controls. The game receives the virtual XInput device, while x360ce reads the real controller and forwards each action. A wheel, joystick or pedal set can therefore be usable in a title that offers only Xbox-style controller support, provided the controls can be mapped sensibly.

x360ce.exe is not a game, firmware package or replacement for a controller. It is the executable you launch to create and configure the mapping. The physical controller must be connected, recognized by Windows and available to x360ce before a game can receive input.
How the current architecture works
In version 4.x, x360ce relies on the ViGEmBus virtual gamepad emulation driver. The driver creates a virtual controller that Windows and the game can see as an XInput device. x360ce remains the bridge between that virtual device and your DirectInput hardware.
This is different from the older 3.x design. Version 3 worked by replacing or supplying an XInput library next to a game executable. Version 4.x uses system-level virtual-controller emulation instead, so old instructions telling you to copy DLL files into every game directory are not the normal method today.

Is x360ce.exe safe to use?
x360ce is a legitimate input-compatibility utility when obtained from the official x360ce project and used with its current documentation. Its purpose is controller translation, not antivirus protection or game modification. As with any executable and driver, download the package from the project’s official source, keep a copy of the original archive, and avoid repackaged downloads that add unrelated installers.
Installing ViGEmBus changes the devices Windows exposes to applications. Read each installation prompt, and remove or repair the driver through x360ce if you later stop using the program. A game may list both your physical controller and the virtual controller; that is an input-configuration issue, not evidence that the mapper is malfunctioning.
What you need before configuring it
- A connected DirectInput-compatible controller, joystick, wheel or pedal set.
- The current x360ce package extracted to a folder you can write to, such as a folder under your user profile.
- A game that supports XInput controller devices.
- Permission to install or repair the ViGEmBus driver when x360ce requests it.
- Time to test every button and axis before starting a match or race.
Close other controller-mapping programs while setting up x360ce. Multiple mappers can create competing virtual devices and make it difficult to identify which profile is active.

How to set up x360ce 4.x step by step
- Download and extract the current package. Extract the archive rather than running the executable from inside a compressed file. Open the extracted folder and launch
x360ce.exe. - Install ViGEmBus if prompted. In a 4.x installation, x360ce reports when the virtual gamepad driver is missing. Use the driver option in x360ce’s interface and complete the Windows prompts. The same interface can later uninstall or repair ViGEmBus.
- Connect the physical controller. Plug in the USB device or turn on the controller before adding it. If Windows has not recognized it, x360ce cannot map it.
- Open the Controller tab and add the device. Select the connected controller from the available devices. If several devices are present, identify the correct one by moving a stick or pressing a button and watching which entry responds.
- Enable the mapped device. A controller can be listed but inactive. Use the enable control for the device you intend to present as the virtual Xbox 360 controller.
- Assign buttons and axes. Record each physical control against the intended Xbox layout. Move both sticks through their full range, test each trigger separately and verify that a wheel or pedal axis is not inverted. If the software offers an automatic assignment, review every result manually.
- Save the configuration. Write the profile after mapping. If you change a control later, save again before closing x360ce.
- Minimize x360ce and start the game. Keep x360ce running, normally minimized to the notification area, while the game is active. Closing the mapper can remove the input bridge.
- Select the right input mode in the game. In the game’s controller or input settings, choose an XInput or Xbox-style controller option when one is available. Some games switch between keyboard, DirectInput and XInput profiles, and the wrong selection can make a correctly configured virtual device appear unresponsive.
Does x360ce.exe belong in the game folder?
No. The official version 4 documentation states that there is no need to place x360ce.exe inside the game folder. Keep the extracted program in its own folder, launch it before the game and leave it minimized while you play.

Instructions that copy an XInput DLL beside a game executable refer to the legacy 3.x approach. Mixing those steps with 4.x can create duplicate devices, load the wrong component or leave you troubleshooting files that the current architecture does not use.

Troubleshooting when the game does not detect the controller
The controller is missing from x360ce
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller, then restart x360ce.
- Close software that may have exclusive access to the device.
- Check Windows’ own game-controller panel by opening the Run dialog, entering
joy.cpl, and confirming that the device appears and responds. - If Windows does not list it, resolve the USB, Bluetooth or hardware connection first; x360ce cannot map a device that the operating system does not expose.
- Return to the Controller tab, add the device and enable it before assigning controls.
The virtual controller is not created
Open x360ce and check the ViGEmBus status. If the driver is reported missing or damaged, use the program’s install or repair option, complete the Windows prompts and restart x360ce. A repair may be necessary after a driver cleanup, system restore or interrupted installation.

The game still receives no input
- Confirm that x360ce is running and minimized rather than closed.
- Verify that the mapped device is enabled and that the profile was saved.
- In the game’s input menu, select XInput or the Xbox controller profile.
- Test a simple button first, then analog controls. If buttons work but sticks do not, revisit the axis assignments and calibration.
- Start the game only after x360ce has created the virtual device. Some games enumerate controllers at launch and will not notice a device added later.
The game sees two controllers or every action happens twice
This usually means the game can see both the original physical controller and the ViGEmBus emulated controller. The official x360ce guidance points to HID Hide as a way to hide the physical HID device from applications while leaving the virtual controller available. Configure HID Hide carefully so that x360ce itself can still read the physical device; hiding the source from the mapper would stop the translation.
Buttons, triggers or axes are wrong
- Re-record the affected control while touching only that button or axis.
- Check for an inverted axis, especially on pedals and triggers.
- Make sure left and right sticks are assigned to separate horizontal and vertical axes.
- For a wheel, move through the entire steering range and confirm that the center position is neutral before saving.
- Test the virtual output in x360ce before launching the game so you can separate a mapping error from a game setting.
Input works in menus but not during play
Check whether the game changes control schemes after loading a save, entering a vehicle or joining a multiplayer session. Re-select its XInput profile if necessary, and keep x360ce running in the notification area for the entire session. If only one game behaves differently, create or adjust that game’s profile rather than changing a mapping that works elsewhere.
Keeping a stable configuration
Save a known-good profile before experimenting with alternate layouts. Change one control at a time, test it in x360ce, then test it in the game. If a profile becomes confused, remove the affected mapping and add the controller again instead of layering another mapper on top.

When updating x360ce, check that ViGEmBus remains installed and that the expected controller is still enabled. If the virtual device disappears, use the built-in driver repair option before rebuilding every button assignment. Removing x360ce later should include removing its virtual driver through the same interface, followed by a Windows restart if the operating system continues to list a stale virtual controller.
What is the latest x360ce version?
The official project lists version 4.25.67.0 as an x360ce release dated October 11, 2026. The entry notes fixes involving update verification, settings paths, controller disappearance and errors, and device visibility. Because release numbers and package contents can change, check the project’s current release entry when you download rather than relying on an old copy of the executable.
When x360ce is the wrong solution
x360ce helps when a game accepts XInput but your controller does not provide it directly. It cannot repair a broken cable, a dead switch, a controller that Windows never detects, or a game that has no usable controller support at all. It also does not turn every specialized control into a perfect Xbox layout: a wheel or pedal set may require compromises when the game exposes only a small number of standard axes.
If the game already supports your controller natively, its own configuration is usually simpler and avoids an extra virtual device. Use x360ce when the translation from DirectInput hardware to XInput is the specific compatibility gap you need to close.
