Can you upgrade the latest Mac mini’s SSD?
Recent reporting says the M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini’s NAND storage is soldered to the logic board and aftermarket internal upgrades are not supported. That makes it unwise to buy one on the assumption that you can add capacity later. This claim comes from a September 22, 2026 9to5Mac report, not a current-generation Apple repair manual; treat it as reported information rather than an Apple-published service specification.

“Removable” also does not mean a standard M.2 SSD will fit. For the 2024 M4 design, iFixit says standard M.2 drives are incompatible because Apple integrates the storage controller into Apple silicon. Apple’s repair manual does include an “SSD Module” procedure for 2024 models, but that does not establish M.2 compatibility or that the latest generation uses the same construction. The procedure is relevant to technically capable owners of that 2024 model, not a recommended upgrade path for buyers of the reported latest generation.

Apple’s published figures for the 2024 models are useful historical context, but they are not verified capacity options for the M6 or M5 Pro. Apple listed the following choices for the M4 generation:

These capacities and port ratings come from Apple’s 2024 Mac mini technical specifications. The 40Gb/s and 120Gb/s figures are interface ceilings, not measured external SSD transfer speeds. Apple introduced the M4 and M4 Pro Mac mini in October 2024; neither those specifications nor the 2024 configuration range should be presented as current M6/M5 Pro details.
The September 2026 report identifies the newer generation as M6 and M5 Pro, but the official sources cited here do not establish its storage tiers, configuration prices, or port speeds. Check Apple’s current product listing for the exact model and region before choosing a configuration rather than extrapolating from the 2024 line.

Can you use an external SSD with a Mac mini?
Yes. Apple says a USB or Thunderbolt storage device can host macOS and serve as a startup disk. On Apple silicon, however, the Mac still needs a working built-in startup disk. Apple recommends APFS, particularly for SSDs. Its external startup disk guidance also explains that starting up from an external disk changes how Background Security Improvements are delivered.
