For most people, the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024) is the strongest all-purpose choice among the models covered here: it pairs a 7-inch monochrome screen with adjustable warm light, IPX8 water resistance and Amazon-rated battery life of up to 12 weeks. But a new Paperwhite is scheduled for October 28, 2026, so if you can wait, compare its price and independent reviews before buying. These recommendations are based on published specifications and buying guides, not firsthand testing of every Kindle.
Which Kindle is best for most readers?
The Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024) is the best-supported general-purpose recommendation in the available comparisons. It has a 7-inch monochrome display, 16 GB of storage, adjustable warm light and IPX8 water resistance. Amazon rates its battery life at up to 12 weeks; that is a manufacturer specification, not an observed test result. Amazon’s model-identification guide lists the specifications, while TechRadar’s buyer guide considers it suitable for most readers.

The caveat is timing. A 13th-generation Paperwhite is scheduled for October 28, 2026. Tom’s Guide and WIRED report that full independent reviews are forthcoming, so there is not yet enough evidence here to say whether the new model is a better buy. If your current reader still works, waiting for the new model’s review and comparing its regional price with the 2024 Paperwhite is sensible.
Choose by how you read
| What matters most | Model to consider | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday reading, including by water | Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024) | 7-inch monochrome screen, warm light, IPX8 water resistance, 16 GB storage and up to 12 weeks of battery life per Amazon. |
| A small, simple travel reader | Kindle (11th Generation, 2024) | 6-inch screen, adjustable front light and 16 GB storage. TechRadar’s editor identifies the basic Kindle as a reading-only travel choice. |
| Books or highlights that benefit from color | Kindle Colorsoft | Color display; WIRED lists 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. |
| Handwriting, annotation or document work | Kindle Scribe | A larger, pen-enabled screen supports writing-oriented tasks; it is a specialized option rather than the default for novels. |
What separates the Kindle models?
Screen size and portability
The 2024 basic Kindle has a 6-inch screen, while the 2024 Paperwhite and Colorsoft have 7-inch screens. A smaller display makes the basic model the more compact option; the larger screens give text and pages more room. Scribe models are substantially larger and built around writing as well as reading.

- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.
- Escape into your books - Tune out messages, emails, and social media with a distraction-free reading experience.
- Read for a while - Get up to 6 weeks of battery life on a single charge.
- Take your library with you – 16 GB storage holds thousands of books.
Color versus monochrome
The basic Kindle and Paperwhite use monochrome displays. Colorsoft is the option to consider if color pages or color highlights matter to you. WIRED’s comparison lists Colorsoft resolution as 300 ppi for black-and-white content and 150 ppi for color. Color is a specific preference, not a reason on its own to treat Colorsoft as the best all-round reader.
Lighting and battery claims
Amazon lists adjustable warm light and up to 12 weeks of battery life for the 2024 Paperwhite. For the 2024 basic Kindle, Amazon lists an adjustable front light and up to six weeks. These are manufacturer estimates, not results from a comparable independent battery test, and actual use may differ.

Water resistance
Amazon specifies IPX8 water resistance for the 2024 Paperwhite. The basic Kindle’s Amazon specification page does not list that protection. TechRadar’s comparison also lists the Colorsoft as IPX8 and the Scribe as not waterproof. If water resistance matters, check the exact model’s specifications rather than assuming it is shared across the range.

Get the basic Kindle for compact, reading-only use
The 2024 Kindle (11th Generation) is a reasonable fit if you want a 6-inch reader that is easy to carry and do not need the Paperwhite’s listed water resistance or warm-light feature. Amazon lists 16 GB of storage and up to six weeks of battery life for this model. The figures are manufacturer specifications; Amazon notes that availability varies by marketplace.
Rank #3
- Kindle Paperwhite – 7“ Paperwhite display with high contrast ratio and fast page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Consider Colorsoft only if you will use color
Colorsoft is the targeted choice for readers who want color on the page or in highlights. Its color resolution is lower than its black-and-white resolution according to WIRED’s comparison, and the color display alone does not establish that it is a better choice for ordinary monochrome reading.
Choose Scribe for writing tasks
Scribe’s larger, pen-enabled format is relevant if you expect to handwrite, annotate or work with documents on the device. If your main use is reading novels, its writing-oriented design is unlikely to be a reason to choose it over a smaller reader.

Should you buy now or wait for the 2026 Paperwhite?
The 2026 Paperwhite is scheduled for October 28, 2026, according to Tom’s Guide’s launch coverage. WIRED also reports the launch and says it will update its guide after reviewing the model. Until independent reviews and a live price comparison are available, the 2024 Paperwhite remains the better-supported recommendation—not a proven winner over its unreleased successor.
If you need a Kindle now, compare the current 2024 Paperwhite price with any locally available model and buy based on the features you will use. If you can wait, revisit the decision after the new Paperwhite’s reviews are published. Prices, configurations and availability can vary by country; Amazon’s Kindle identification guide cautions that not every generation has been available in every marketplace.
