Does YouTube Live Transcode 4K 60fps Streams to Lower Resolutions?

YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, but a 4K60 input does not guarantee a particular lower-resolution option for every viewer.

Yes. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. A 4K 60fps stream is the quality you send to YouTube; it does not mean every viewer receives only a 4K 60fps version. YouTube does not publish a guaranteed resolution ladder for every stream on its encoder-settings page.

What “transcoding” means for a live stream

  1. Ingest: Your encoder sends a video feed to YouTube. YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists supported resolutions and frame rates, including 4K/2160p at 60fps.
  2. Transcoding: YouTube says it creates multiple output formats from the live stream.
  3. Playback: Viewers watch on different devices and networks. YouTube identifies those differences as the reason for offering multiple formats, but does not describe a fixed output-resolution ladder or exactly how the player selects a rendition.

So, if you send a 4K60 feed, viewers may have lower-resolution options, but the cited guidance does not guarantee a particular option—such as 1080p—for every stream.

What YouTube publishes for 4K60 ingest

YouTube Help’s English encoder-settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these bitrate figures for 2160p at 60fps. They are published encoder settings, not results from an independent test.

Codec YouTube’s 2160p60 bitrate guidance
AV1 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum
H.264 35 Mbps recommended

These values come from YouTube’s English-language table; localized versions may present different columns or recommendations. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance.

Settings and latency considerations

  • YouTube recommends encoder frame rates up to 60fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Use constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • For 4K/2160 streams, YouTube says low-latency optimization is unavailable, so the stream uses normal latency.

Before a public broadcast, YouTube advises testing with representative audio and movement, then monitoring stream health and any messages during the event. The settings and testing guidance are on YouTube Help.

Does streaming in 4K guarantee that viewers can choose 1080p?

No specific lower resolution is guaranteed by the cited YouTube guidance. It confirms multiple output formats, but does not enumerate every resolution YouTube will create for an individual stream or explain the player’s rendition-selection rules. Avoid promising viewers a particular quality option based solely on the fact that your encoder sends 4K60.

Do you need a special encoder?

No special hardware is required simply to have YouTube transcode a stream. YouTube describes an encoder as either streaming software or standalone hardware; an encoder can also let creators use external audio and video equipment for a more advanced production. Its overview is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
