How to Route a VirtualDJ Playlist into a YouTube Livestream

Use VirtualDJ’s Video broadcast mode and a YouTube Studio stream key to send a mix to YouTube Live. Here’s how to connect, test audio, troubleshoot, and distinguish YouTube from internet radio streaming.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send a VirtualDJ mix to YouTube Live, use VirtualDJ’s video broadcast mode: enable YouTube live streaming, copy a stream key from YouTube Studio, then paste it into Settings > Broadcast in VirtualDJ, choose Video and YouTube, and start the broadcast. This sends a video livestream to your YouTube channel; it is different from sending audio to an internet radio server. The steps below cover the broadcast connection, testing, audio routing, and replay checks. They do not assume a particular VirtualDJ playlist or Automix behavior, which is not specified in the cited setup guides.

Before you start: prepare YouTube Live

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room. If the channel has never streamed live, enable live streaming ahead of time; YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the setup.
  2. Create or select a stream. In the Live Control Room, use the Stream tab to create a stream or select one you have already set up.
  3. Copy the stream key. Find the key in the stream settings and keep it private. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your channel. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update VirtualDJ with the new key.

VirtualDJ’s older guide refers to YouTube’s live dashboard and an “Encoder Setup” area. YouTube’s current documentation uses YouTube Studio and Live Control Room terminology, so labels in older VirtualDJ screenshots may differ. See VirtualDJ’s YouTube broadcast guide alongside the current YouTube instructions.

Connect VirtualDJ to YouTube

  1. Open Settings > Broadcast in VirtualDJ.
  2. Select Video, rather than an audio-only, Internet Radio Server, or podcast mode.
  3. Choose YouTube as the destination.
  4. Paste the stream key you copied from YouTube Studio into the Stream Key field.
  5. Set or confirm your stream title and description in YouTube Studio, then press START BROADCAST in VirtualDJ.
  6. Wait a few seconds, then check YouTube Studio for the incoming preview and LIVE status. Do not announce the stream until the preview and audio are correct.

The key distinction is the destination: this procedure sends a video livestream to YouTube. VirtualDJ lists that mode separately from its computer-audio broadcast, Internet Radio Server, and podcast options. The VirtualDJ Broadcast manual describes those modes.

What “radio playlist” means in this setup

If by “radio playlist” you mean a continuous selection of tracks or a DJ mix, the broadcast steps above route VirtualDJ’s video output to YouTube; they do not establish how a specific playlist feature behaves. The cited setup documentation does not specify queue persistence, Automix, unattended playback, or a setting that automatically advances through a particular playlist. Confirm the intended playlist behavior in the VirtualDJ version you use before relying on it for a long or unattended stream.

Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.

If you mean a hosted internet radio station, that is a different route: choose Internet Radio Server in Broadcast and enter the connection details supplied by your radio host. VirtualDJ lists Icecast in OGG format and Shoutcast in MP3 format. Its manual says this radio-server mode requires a Pro Infinity or Pro Monthly license; that requirement applies to the radio-server mode, not the YouTube video procedure.

Test audio, connection, and stream health

Test the actual mix

Before a public session, run a private or otherwise low-risk test with audio and motion similar to the planned show. Listen to the YouTube preview, verify that the mix is reaching the stream, and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast. YouTube advises testing before going live and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to and through Google’s servers. Its current encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube encoder recommendations; do not assume VirtualDJ exposes each encoder control in every version. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guide.

Check available upload capacity

VirtualDJ gives approximate required upload speeds of 4–6 Mbps at 1080p, 2–4 Mbps at 720p, and about 1 Mbps at 360p. These figures come from Atomix Productions / VirtualDJ’s guide, whose publication date is not stated; they are estimates, not guarantees for every network. A speed test alone does not confirm that a sustained live feed will be stable. Check stream health during a test and allow headroom for other devices using the same connection.

Choose audio routing that matches your setup

A separate audio interface is not required for the documented direct YouTube procedure. VirtualDJ supports computer audio and USB sound cards, with options such as speaker output, master plus headphones, and separate deck routing. If you need a distinct cue/headphone path or additional physical outputs, review VirtualDJ’s Audio Setup manual and consider a USB audio interface for DJ streaming. Check that the device offers the input and output routing your setup needs before buying it.

  • Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer

Stop the stream and check the replay

  1. When the mix is finished, stop broadcasting in VirtualDJ.
  2. Check YouTube Studio to see whether the stream has processed and whether a replay is available.
  3. If the replay is missing, muted, or blocked, review YouTube’s status and copyright notices in Studio rather than assuming that every livestream will be published as a replay.

VirtualDJ warns that after a broadcast is stopped, YouTube analyzes the uploaded stream and may block it, mute it, or prevent publication because of copyright. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that does not override copyright review or guarantee that a particular replay will remain available. You can play a recording in VirtualDJ without necessarily having permission to livestream it or publish an archive; check the applicable rights before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

What you see Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not show an incoming preview The broadcast has not started, the wrong destination or mode is selected, or the stream key is incorrect. Confirm Settings > Broadcast > Video, the YouTube destination, the pasted key, and START BROADCAST. Compare the key with the active stream in YouTube Studio.
The account cannot go live yet Live streaming has not been enabled or first-time activation is still pending. Enable live streaming in YouTube Studio and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as YouTube says may be required.
The preview appears but audio is missing or wrong VirtualDJ may be using an unintended audio source, sound card, or channel routing. Check VirtualDJ’s audio configuration and test the same output you intend to use. The Audio Setup manual documents its audio options.
The stream health is poor or the feed drops The connection may not sustain the selected output, or other network traffic may be competing for capacity. Run another test, reduce the stream output if available, reduce competing traffic, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. Treat VirtualDJ’s speed estimates as approximate, not as a guarantee.
The livestream ends but there is no usable replay YouTube may still be processing it, or copyright review may have muted, blocked, or prevented publication. Check the stream and copyright status in YouTube Studio. Do not infer replay rights from the fact that a track plays in VirtualDJ.
A radio-server connection does not appear on YouTube The Internet Radio Server mode sends audio to a radio host, not to a YouTube video stream. For YouTube, switch to Video and select YouTube. Use the radio-server mode only when you have a host and its connection details.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded material looping on YouTube around the clock, rather than broadcast a live VirtualDJ mix, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast from a camera or VirtualDJ live input.
