YouTube Live Keyframes Not Matching the Recommended 2-Second Interval: How to Fix It

YouTube recommends keyframes every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4. Convert the interval to frames, verify the encoded output, and troubleshoot persistent warnings.

Set your encoder’s keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends that interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. If the warning continues, check the frame rate and actual encoded output, then investigate possible ingestion errors and use a closed GOP if your encoder offers that setting. YouTube’s live encoder settings and its live-streaming error guidance describe these requirements.

What the 2-second recommendation means

A keyframe interval is the time between keyframes in the video stream. YouTube recommends one every 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The warning can appear when keyframes are sent either too frequently or not frequently enough; YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to send them every 2 seconds.

Keyframe controls may be labeled as an interval, frequency, or GOP size. Some encoders express the setting in seconds; others use a number of frames. The target is a duration, so the corresponding frame count depends on the stream’s frame rate.

Convert 2 seconds to frames

Encoded frame rate Frames per 2 seconds Basis
30 fps 60 frames YouTube’s documented example
60 fps 120 frames Calculated as 2 × 60 fps

If your encoder accepts a frame count, use twice the encoded frames per second. For other frame rates, apply the same calculation. If you change the frame rate, check the keyframe spacing again: the number of frames may need to change to preserve a 2-second interval.

ZowieBox, 4K HDMI NDI Video Encoder/Decoder, HDMI NDI
  • Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
  • Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
  • NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

How to troubleshoot the warning

  1. Find the control in the encoder that is sending the stream. Look for a keyframe interval, keyframe frequency, or GOP-size setting. Labels and units vary, so use your encoder’s documentation if the control is unclear.
  2. Set a fixed 2-second interval. If the encoder takes seconds, enter 2. If it takes frames, calculate two times the encoded frames per second—for example, 60 frames at 30 fps or 120 at 60 fps.
  3. Verify the frame rate and output. Confirm the frame rate being encoded, not just a different value elsewhere in the setup. Check the actual output timing where your encoder provides a way to inspect it. A changed frame rate can make a previously correct frame-count setting produce a different interval.
  4. Check stream health if the warning remains. YouTube says ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes. Review the stream-health message for other indications of an ingestion problem.
  5. Use a closed GOP if the encoder exposes the option. YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Not every encoder exposes this setting; do not assume an unavailable control is the cause.
  6. Test before the event and monitor during it. Test with audio and video conditions similar to the planned stream, then watch stream health while live. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health.

Settings that are related—but are not the first fix

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings also specify CBR bitrate encoding, support H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video codecs, and list frame rates up to 60 fps. Those settings do not change the keyframe correction: adjust the keyframe interval for this warning. Change codec or bitrate only if a separate message or problem points to those settings.

YouTube describes encoder-based streaming with either software applications or standalone hardware encoders. Its instructions identify a configuration issue; they do not establish a need to replace an encoder or buy additional equipment. For general encoder setup, see YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, rather than troubleshoot an encoder sending a live feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It does not change the keyframe settings of an encoder you are already using.
