YouTube Live accepts AV1 for SDR streams at 4K (2160p) and up to 60 fps, provided your encoder and connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s published AV1/H.265 bitrate range for 4K/60 is 10–40 Mbps. AV1 is not supported for HDR in YouTube’s encoder guidance, and 4K streams use normal latency.
What YouTube supports for AV1 at 4K/60
YouTube lists AV1 as an accepted video codec for encoder streaming over RTMP or RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS. The settings allow frame rates up to 60 fps and specify a bitrate range of 10 Mbps minimum to 40 Mbps maximum for 2160p at 60 fps with AV1 or H.265. These are YouTube’s published bounds, not a promise that every encoder or network can deliver a stable stream. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Codec | AV1 is accepted for encoder ingestion; H.264 and H.265/HEVC are also listed. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K / 2160p at up to 60 fps. |
| AV1/H.265 bitrate at 2160p/60 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum. |
| Rate control | CBR. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended every 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| AV1 tiling at 3840×2160 and above | At least two tile columns. |
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. |
| Latency at 4K | Normal latency. The low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 2160p. |
Configure an SDR AV1 4K/60 stream
- Confirm the encoder supports the whole combination. Check for AV1 encoding at 3840×2160 and 60 fps, RTMPS output, CBR, and control over keyframe interval and AV1 tile columns. YouTube documents the settings but does not certify particular encoder models.
- Set the video output. Choose 3840×2160 resolution, 60 fps, and AV1. Use this workflow for SDR, not HDR.
- Set rate control and bitrate. Select CBR and choose a bitrate within YouTube’s 10–40 Mbps published range for AV1/H.265 at 2160p/60. Choose a value your upload connection can sustain consistently; the published range alone does not guarantee stability.
- Set keyframes and AV1 tiles. Set keyframes to 2 seconds, and never exceed 4 seconds. At 3840×2160 or higher, configure at least two AV1 tile columns.
- Connect to YouTube over RTMPS. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use the server and stream key shown for that stream in your encoder. Keep the key private; use YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if the Studio labels or workflow differ for your account. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Test before the event. Send a test stream using representative movement and audio, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages and the encoder’s output. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; a successful configuration depends on the actual encoder, connection, and account.
AV1 and HDR are different cases
YouTube Help states, “AV1 is not supported for HDR.” If HDR is required, the cited encoder guidance specifies H.265/HEVC for HDR rather than AV1. Do not treat YouTube’s acceptance of SDR AV1 at 4K/60 as evidence that AV1 HDR ingestion is supported. YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a controlled quality or efficiency comparison between AV1 and other codecs. YouTube Help: encoder settings.

Why a 4K stream cannot use YouTube’s low-latency improvement option
YouTube says the option to improve for low latency is unavailable for 4K/2160p; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. If minimizing delay matters more than 4K resolution, choose a lower resolution and check the latency options available for that stream in YouTube Studio. YouTube Help: stream latency.

Common AV1 4K/60 problems to check
- YouTube does not receive a usable stream: confirm the encoder is sending AV1 over the selected RTMPS endpoint and that the stream key matches the live event.
- Stream health is unstable: check whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate, whether the encoder is actually maintaining 60 fps, and whether dropped frames or encoder overload are reported. YouTube’s bitrate ceiling is not a guarantee of available upload capacity.
- Encoder rejects the configuration: verify AV1 at 3840×2160/60, CBR, keyframe interval, and at least two tile columns. Support for AV1 alone does not establish support for this full configuration.
- HDR is missing or rejected: switch to an HDR workflow using H.265/HEVC as specified by YouTube’s guidance; AV1 is not supported for HDR there.
- Low latency cannot be selected: this is expected at 2160p. YouTube sets 4K streams to normal latency.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream rather than broadcast a live camera or encoder feed, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
