You can use a Google Cloud Compute Engine virtual machine (VM) to run an encoder that sends a prerecorded church service to YouTube Live. Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio, copy that event’s YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder on the VM, then check the preview and stream health before going live. The VM hosts the encoder; it does not create the YouTube event or key.
Choose the right Google Cloud setup
Compute Engine is Google Cloud’s virtual-machine service: it provides the computer that runs your streaming process. For a simple file-to-YouTube workflow, the encoder on the VM connects directly to YouTube Live. Google Cloud’s separate Live Stream API is not required for that connection.

| Architecture | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| VM runs an encoder and sends directly to YouTube | You need a remote host to play a prerecorded file and deliver it to a YouTube Live event. | You manage the encoder process, VM capacity, network connection, and YouTube ingest settings. |
| Encoder sends to Google Cloud Live Stream API, which processes media and provides HLS/DASH output | Your project needs Google Cloud’s managed ingest, transcoding, and output workflow for downstream playback systems. | This adds a media service and a different pipeline; it is not a prerequisite for direct YouTube Live streaming. |
Google Cloud documents the Compute Engine service as a way to create and run virtual machines on Google infrastructure. Its Live Stream API documentation describes a separate managed media workflow, including SRT and RTMP inputs and HLS/DASH outputs. Do not use a Live Stream API input address as the destination in a command intended for YouTube.
Prepare the service recording and confirm rights
Before configuring the stream, check the rights for every part of the recording: worship music, performances, sermon illustrations, and any licensed media. YouTube’s livestream terms say the person providing live content represents that they have the necessary rights to exploit it on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants.

A YouTube event setting such as “unlisted” does not establish permission to use third-party material. Whether a particular church license covers online streaming depends on the license and jurisdiction; verify that with the rights holder or a qualified adviser rather than assuming a general church license is sufficient.
Check YouTube eligibility and create the event
- Confirm the channel can stream live. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its current eligibility guidance also says live streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live streaming eligibility requirements.
- Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Set the title, description, audience and privacy according to the church’s plan. A scheduled live broadcast of a prerecorded service is different from uploading a video or setting up a YouTube Premiere; do not assume one format’s controls or policies apply to another.
- Open the event’s stream settings. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, locate the server URL and stream key for the event. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter these details into the encoder to start streaming. Follow the labels and endpoint shown for the current event and encoder workflow.
Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a script repository, expose it in screenshots, or include it in logs that others can access. Restrict access to the VM and its configuration. If the key is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder before streaming again. YouTube explains stream settings and key management in its live streaming settings guidance.

Create a VM and install an encoder
Create a Compute Engine VM in a region that suits your operating needs, then connect to it using Google Cloud’s documented SSH access. Install an encoder such as FFmpeg using the method appropriate to the VM’s operating system. Google Cloud’s encoder examples include FFmpeg, but its examples aimed at the Live Stream API use that API’s own destination; for a direct YouTube stream, configure YouTube’s event URL and key instead.
Choose an instance size based on the encoding work you will actually ask it to do. A software encoder uses CPU; a command-line VM does not necessarily have an interactive desktop or hardware video encoding. Do not assume GPU acceleration is present. Network egress capacity and a stable connection matter as well as CPU. Test the selected settings with the actual file and instance rather than relying on a universal machine type or bitrate.

Set encoding options and connect FFmpeg
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations include RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval, with intervals not exceeding four seconds. Available video codec options include H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 in applicable workflows; audio choices include AAC or MP3. Select options supported by both the encoder and the event, and check the resulting preview and stream health in YouTube Studio.
- Keyframes: target a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1 audio. Its stated audio bitrates are 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1.
- Video rate: use CBR as YouTube recommends, but choose a bitrate and resolution that match the source, event configuration, encoder capacity, and available network egress. There is no single appropriate rate for every recording and VM.
- Frame rate and format: match the source and confirm the encoder’s output is compatible with the event. Test rather than assuming a sample command suits every file.
The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested, copy-and-run command. Replace the destination with the current YouTube ingest URL and stream key for the specific event; adjust codecs, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings to match the source and YouTube’s current requirements.

ffmpeg -re -i service.mp4
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube RTMP(S) ingest URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
Here, -re paces file input in real time, while -i service.mp4 selects the recording. The shown -r 30 and -g 60 are examples, not universal settings: at 30 frames per second, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds, but the frame rate and GOP must suit the actual source and event. The placeholder destination is deliberately not a real endpoint. Use the exact connection information shown for your YouTube event and keep the key out of shared command histories and logs.

Run a full preflight, then start and end the broadcast
- Check the input file. Confirm the path, that the file plays, and that its audio and video are intact. Note the expected duration so you can monitor it.
- Start the encoder early. Begin the process far enough ahead of the service to let YouTube receive the signal and generate a preview.
- Inspect the preview and sound. Verify picture, audio level, synchronization, and that the content is the intended recording. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream; a still or silent test may miss problems.
- Check stream health and messages. Watch the Live Control Room indicators and act on any warnings before proceeding.
- Go live using the event controls. Once the preview is ready, use the scheduled event’s controls in YouTube Studio to start the broadcast.
- End deliberately. Stop the encoder and end the event using the workflow shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but check the event and resulting archive after ending rather than treating archiving as a guarantee for every configuration or account.
Estimate the cost before leaving the VM running
A reliable Google Cloud bill cannot be given without the VM type, region, runtime, disk use, and network transfer. Check the current Google Cloud pricing for the selected resources before starting, and account for the complete rehearsal or service duration—not just the time spent creating the VM. Stop or delete resources you no longer need according to your operational plan, and verify what remains active in the project.

Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: confirm the VM has network access, the encoder process is running, and the destination uses the URL and key for the correct YouTube event. Check for copied whitespace or an outdated key.
- The key was exposed or reset: generate or select a valid key in YouTube Studio, update the encoder configuration securely, and restart the connection.
- The preview is black or shows the wrong content: inspect the input path and filename on the VM, confirm FFmpeg can read the file, and check that the selected video stream is the intended one.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: test the actual recording, verify the selected audio stream and sample rate, and check the encoder’s audio settings and YouTube’s event feedback.
- The stream reports unstable health or drops: check VM CPU load and outgoing network capacity, reduce encoding demands if the instance cannot sustain them, and rehearse long enough to expose interruptions. Do not assume a larger bitrate improves quality if the VM or network cannot maintain it.
- The stream ends before the service does: inspect the source duration, encoder process, VM status, and stream health messages. A VM-based encoder process must remain running for the file to continue playing.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: check the event and processing status in YouTube Studio after ending. Automatic archiving guidance for streams under 12 hours is not a guarantee that every individual event will be available exactly as expected.
Or let it run in the cloud
