YouTube’s published encoder guidance lists live streams up to 60 fps and includes resolutions through 2160p (4K). For 4K at 60 fps, its recommended bitrate is 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265 (HEVC), or 50 Mbps with H.264. These are encoder input settings, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive a 4K60 version: YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats.
What resolution and frame rate can you send to YouTube Live?
YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists video settings from 360p through 2160p (4K) and frame rates up to 60 fps. It does not list a 120 fps encoder mode. The guidance gives bitrate recommendations for specific resolution-and-frame-rate combinations; it does not describe that table as an exhaustive policy limit for every possible configuration.

The table shows YouTube’s published minimum and recommended incoming bitrates in Mbps. Use the column for the codec your encoder actually sends; the H.264 recommendation is not interchangeable with the AV1/H.265 recommendation.

How to choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Match the stream to the source
Choose a mode your source and encoder can output reliably. A 60 fps setting suits motion that benefits from smoother movement, while 30 fps may be sufficient for less dynamic material. Sending a higher resolution than the source does not create new detail, and choosing 4K60 also means meeting the corresponding codec-specific bitrate recommendation.
Check the codec before setting the bitrate
YouTube’s listed video codecs are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. The table separates AV1/H.265 from H.264 because their recommended bitrates differ. YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR; for HDR it recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), and says HLS may be considered if the encoder cannot support those capabilities with RTMP.

Use a reliable connection, not just a high number
YouTube advises testing the upload connection and selecting settings that are reliable for the available connection. Its guidance does not establish a universal extra bandwidth margin, so do not treat the table’s recommended bitrate as proof your connection can sustain it. Test before the event under conditions similar to the planned stream, including audio and movement, then monitor stream health and messages while live.

- Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, which it describes as encrypting data to and through Google’s servers.
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Resolution detection: Automatic detection is recommended. Manual selection requires a custom stream key with manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution.
YouTube says it will “automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” As a result, an encoder sending 2160p60 does not ensure that every viewer’s device or connection will play 2160p60.

Backed by a 1-year warranty and 24/7 online technical support.
What 4K means for latency
For 2160p (4K), YouTube does not offer the option to improve the stream for low latency; 4K streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. YouTube Help states: “For 4K / 2160, the option to improve for low latency is not available.” Latency is the delay between the live event and playback, and lower latency can mean more playback buffering, as described in YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Set up an encoder stream
- Choose an encoder. YouTube describes encoders as either streaming software or standalone hardware, suitable for screen or gameplay capture, external audio/video equipment, or multi-camera production. Its verified encoder list includes OBS, which it describes as open-source software for recording and live streaming at no charge.
- Create or configure the YouTube live stream. In YouTube’s encoder workflow, create the stream and use its stream key in your encoder. A stream key connects encoder output to the intended YouTube live stream; treat it as private and do not share it.
- Set the encoder output. Select a supported resolution and frame rate, the codec you intend to use, the matching bitrate from YouTube’s table, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Use RTMPS where supported.
- Choose automatic or manual resolution handling. Leave detection automatic unless you need manual control. For manual settings, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Test, then monitor. Before the event, test with audio and representative motion. During the stream, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages and adjust to a mode your connection can sustain.
When dedicated hardware makes sense
A standalone encoder can suit a production built around external video and audio equipment or multiple cameras. YouTube describes the Blackmagic Web Presenter 4K as a hardware streaming engine that can stream directly to YouTube up to 2160p60. It does not raise YouTube’s listed encoder frame-rate ceiling above 60 fps. Check current availability in your market before purchase; no price or marketplace availability is established here.

Troubleshoot common setting mismatches
- The stream will not start or the incoming mode differs from the intended mode: Check that the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and codec are supported by its own output settings, and confirm the YouTube stream is configured for the intended input. If you forced a manual resolution, confirm the custom key has manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution.
- The stream is unstable: Compare the encoder bitrate and codec against YouTube’s table, check upload performance, and test a less demanding mode if the connection cannot sustain the selected setting. YouTube recommends choosing reliable settings and monitoring stream health; its bitrate recommendations alone cannot guarantee stability.
- Viewers report lower resolution than the encoder sends: YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple formats, and the viewer’s device and network affect playback. The input setting is not a promise that every viewer receives the same resolution.
- 4K cannot use the low-latency option: This is expected in YouTube’s guidance: 2160p has no improve-for-low-latency option and is set to normal latency.
- HDR with AV1 is unavailable: YouTube says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Its guidance recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR, or considering HLS if the encoder cannot support the needed HDR capabilities with RTMP.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping as a YouTube live stream rather than operate an encoder continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded video, not camera-based live production. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
