No universal automatic end time is stated in YouTube’s current Help guidance. The important 12-hour threshold concerns whether YouTube captures an automatic archive and how far viewers can rewind—not a confirmed maximum length for the live broadcast itself. If you plan to stream longer, arrange a separate local recording rather than relying on YouTube to save the whole stream.
What the 12-hour threshold actually means
YouTube Help distinguishes between the live broadcast, its automatic archive and viewers’ ability to rewind while it is live. Its guidance does not establish that every livestream ends automatically at 12 hours.

| What you are asking about | YouTube Help guidance |
|---|---|
| Does the live broadcast automatically stop at 12 hours? | The cited guidance does not state a universal automatic end time. |
| Will YouTube automatically archive the stream? | A stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. If it exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. This is archive guidance, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will be saved. (YouTube Help: Archive live streams) |
| Can viewers rewind during a very long stream? | DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Some devices and app versions have lower limits. (YouTube Help: Turn on DVR on live streams) |
In practical terms, a stream can continue past 12 hours without that fact alone proving it will end. But the longer it runs, the less safe it is to assume viewers can rewind through the whole broadcast or that YouTube will preserve a complete archive afterward.
What happens to viewers’ rewind options?
DVR lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. On a long broadcast, YouTube says rewind capability may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Apple TV, Apple AirPlay and older app versions are subject to lower limits, so viewers may have less rewind access even before a stream reaches that threshold. Viewers also cannot seek back to a point before the stream began.

How to protect a stream longer than 12 hours
- Set up a separate local recording. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Its creator production guidance also recommends checking the local archive file’s integrity. (Archive live streams; Live stream tips)
- Confirm the recording is actually being written. Check that the file exists, grows during the event and can be opened. For an important event, verify the completed recording afterward rather than assuming that an active stream also produced a usable local copy.
- Do not treat local recording as a YouTube archive guarantee. A local file is an independent backup; it does not make YouTube capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours.
YouTube describes mobile, webcam, encoder and console as streaming methods. The cited setup guidance does not specify a particular camera, encoder, microphone or storage drive as necessary to avoid the archive caveat. (YouTube Help: Create a live stream on mobile; Stream with a webcam)
Do not confuse livestream duration with event promotion
YouTube’s event-promotion guidance describes a 10-minute-to-12-hour duration condition for that feature. That condition applies to event promotion; it is not evidence of a universal cap on how long a YouTube livestream can run. (YouTube Help: Promote your live stream)
