Yes. The classic player still exists as Windows Media Player Legacy, an optional feature on Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is separate from Microsoft’s newer Media Player app. Whether Legacy appears on your PC depends on your Windows edition, so a missing Start-menu shortcut does not mean Microsoft discontinued it.
Windows Media Player Legacy and the newer Media Player are different apps
Microsoft uses “Windows Media Player Legacy” for the older application and distinguishes it from the newer Media Player app. Legacy is geared toward traditional playback and library tasks; Microsoft recommends the newer app for modern video features such as 4K. That recommendation does not mean the legacy application has been discontinued. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance describes Legacy as an optional feature of Windows 10 and 11.

How to check whether it is installed or add it
The feature’s availability and the precise Settings labels can vary by Windows edition and build. If the menu path differs on your device, consult Microsoft’s current Windows Media Player troubleshooting page.

If you use Windows N
Windows 10 and 11 N editions omit Windows Media Player and related media technologies by default. Microsoft directs N-edition users to install the Media Feature Pack through Settings > Apps > Optional features, then restart the PC. The pack restores more than the player: it includes media codecs and runtime components, media sharing, and related Windows media technologies. Microsoft notes that some affected features may still not work properly after installation. The cited Media Feature Pack guidance is dated February 2023.
What the legacy player can do
Microsoft describes Windows Media Player Legacy as a tool for playing media files and audio CDs, organizing a media library and playlists, displaying metadata such as album art, creating audio CDs, transferring music to portable music players, and playing streaming content from websites. These are legacy-oriented library and playback functions; they should not be assumed to match every capability of the newer Media Player app.

Which files and discs can it play?
Microsoft’s supported-file list for Windows Media Player 12 includes Windows Media formats such as ASF, WMA and WMV; AVI; MP3 and other MPEG audio extensions; WAV; CD audio tracks; MOV; MP4-family formats; AAC; MPEG-2 TS (.m2ts); and FLAC. The exact extension list is in Microsoft’s supported-file-types documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFile extensions alone cannot guarantee playback. Containers such as AVI, ASF and WAV can hold audio or video encoded with different codecs. Microsoft says additional formats may work if new codecs are installed, but its documentation does not establish that every codec, DRM-protected file, or streaming source will work on every Windows installation.

DVD playback is not included in the documented Windows Media Player Legacy feature. Installing Legacy—or the Media Feature Pack on an N edition—should not be treated as adding DVD playback.

Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle change is separate from the availability of Windows Media Player Legacy: the player’s continued existence does not mean Windows 10 itself remains supported. Check Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle guidance for the implications of using an unsupported Windows version.
