What the official release information confirms
The strongest current evidence is the post-launch Steam store listing. Its feature section includes Single-player, Steam Achievements, Steam Cloud, and Family Sharing. Multiplayer or co-op is not listed as a feature.
Auroch Digital’s announcement describes the game as a “branching, single-player campaign” that follows directly from the first Boltgun. That wording is consistent with the Steam listing and explains the intended structure: one player moves through the campaign, making progress through its branching locations and encounters.

Because the listing is the current release record, it carries more weight than pre-release speculation. A February 6, 2026 overview from Space.com said there was no word on co-op at that time; the post-launch listing now gives the clearer status for the released version.
Can you play Boltgun 2 online with another person?
No online co-op mode is documented for the released game. There is no online player count, matchmaking feature, invite system, or co-op campaign listed in the current Steam features. The announcement’s description of a single-player campaign also points to a one-player experience rather than a shared online story.
That means buying the Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S version does not give you a documented way to invite a friend into your campaign. Steam Cloud and Family Sharing are account and library features, not multiplayer functions: Steam Cloud synchronizes supported saves, while Family Sharing lets eligible accounts access a library under platform rules. Neither feature adds a second playable character to a session.

Is there local co-op or split-screen?
Local multiplayer is not documented either. The release materials do not list split-screen, couch co-op, or a same-console second-player mode. A second controller therefore should not be assumed to provide a way to enter the campaign.
This distinction matters because a game can support local co-op without supporting online play, or vice versa. Boltgun 2’s current feature information does not identify either option. If local play is your deciding requirement, treat the game as a solo purchase unless a later, explicit update adds that capability.
Does it have competitive multiplayer or player-versus-player modes?
No competitive mode is listed in the current release information. The documented feature set is centered on the campaign, achievements, cloud saves, and library sharing. There is no announced deathmatch, team mode, arena playlist, or other player-versus-player component to compare.

In practical terms, Boltgun 2 should be approached as a campaign-focused retro-style first-person shooter, not as a multiplayer shooter with a separate solo option. The absence of a multiplayer feature entry is especially significant on Steam, where supported modes are normally called out in the store metadata.

The two-character premise can sound like a co-op setup, but the official description presents Malum Caedo and Nyra Veyrath as alternative protagonists for one player. Each has unique abilities, weapons, and a distinct play style. You select the character whose approach you want to use; you do not assign one character to a friend while controlling the other in the same campaign.

How the branching solo campaign affects play
Boltgun 2 follows directly from the end of the first Boltgun and places the player in new locations. The campaign is described as branching, so the solo structure is not simply a linear sequence presented identically on every run. The important limitation for co-op shoppers is that “branching” describes the shape of the campaign, not a multiplayer lobby or shared progression system.
Since each character has different equipment and abilities, choosing Malum or Nyra is the main supported way to vary a playthrough. A player looking for a second perspective can start another run with the other protagonist, but that is still one-player play. The release materials do not promise simultaneous access to both characters, linked save files, or a handoff system between two players.

Who should buy it, and who should wait?
It fits a solo campaign player
Boltgun 2 is a suitable match if you want a Warhammer 40,000 shooter that you can play alone, choose between two differently equipped protagonists, and follow a branching campaign. The official positioning emphasizes fast first-person shooting in the grim, dark Warhammer 40,000 setting rather than a networked service or a competitive ecosystem.
It is a poor fit for a shared campaign night
If your purchase depends on two people playing together, the current information does not support that use case. There is no documented online invitation flow, couch mode, or split-screen option. Do not buy it on the assumption that Malum and Nyra are a pair of co-op roles.
It may still work for alternating play
Two people can still take turns at the same device or account if they agree on how to share progress, but that is informal pass-the-controller play, not a built-in multiplayer feature. The game’s systems, saves, and achievements are presented as a solo experience.
Could a future update add co-op?
It is technically possible for a developer to add modes after launch, but no such addition is documented in the current release information. The October 14, 2026 launch materials identify the game as single-player and do not announce a multiplayer roadmap. Until an official patch note, store update, or developer statement says otherwise, the reliable expectation is solo-only play.
This qualification is important because online discussions often carry forward pre-release hopes. The February 6, 2026 Space.com overview correctly noted that co-op had not been confirmed before release, but the later Steam listing is the more relevant reference for the version available after launch.
