Using AI can reduce critical-thinking and problem-solving practice when it replaces a person’s own reasoning, but it does not automatically cause skill loss. The outcome depends on what the user delegates, whether they attempt the task first, how carefully they verify the response, and whether they can explain and reuse the reasoning without the tool. AI moves cognitive effort rather than simply removing it: gathering information may become easier, while checking evidence, integrating an answer, and supervising the task become more important.
What the evidence can—and cannot—say
No available study establishes that using generative AI universally or permanently lowers critical-thinking or problem-solving ability. The strongest conclusion is conditional and behavior-dependent. People who use AI as a substitute for planning, retrieval, calculation, explanation, or solution generation may get less practice in those skills. People who use it for hints, critique, comparison, error diagnosis, or feedback can preserve productive struggle and sometimes deepen understanding.

That distinction matters because a polished final answer does not reveal all of the thinking that produced it. A learner may have challenged an AI response, checked sources, and revised a weak argument, or may have copied the first plausible output. Measuring only the final artifact can mistake careful judgment for mindless dependence—or hide dependence behind fluent prose.
What current studies have found
Workplace evidence: effort shifts instead of disappearing
A 2025 Microsoft Research survey collected 936 real-world generative-AI use examples from 319 knowledge workers. Higher confidence in the AI system was associated with less reported critical-thinking effort, while higher confidence in one’s own task skills was associated with more. Because the study measured people’s perceptions at one point in time, it does not show that AI caused an objective decline in ability.

The authors describe a change in the location of effort: information gathering moves toward information verification; solving a problem moves toward integrating the AI response; and executing a task moves toward stewardship of the overall process. Those are genuine cognitive activities, but they are not identical to independently generating a solution. The paper warns that routine or low-stakes work is especially vulnerable to uncritical reliance, where convenience gradually displaces independent problem solving.
Education policy: opportunity with unresolved risks
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, in a 2023 review, identifies accessibility and pedagogical opportunities while saying that more research is needed on generative AI’s effects on creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving. Its practical recommendation is to decide explicitly which activities may be delegated to machines and which must remain human learning activities.
England’s Department for Education published user-research and technical reports in 2024 covering teachers, school leaders, and pupils. They are useful for implementation and assessment decisions, but they do not establish a universal causal effect of AI on critical-thinking ability. Local policies therefore need to distinguish acceptable assistance from work intended to demonstrate unaided learning.

A 2024 study in Computers & Education: Artificial Intelligence examined ChatGPT in creative, ill-defined problem-solving contexts. Such tasks can develop creativity and critical thinking, so the important comparison is scaffolded use versus answer substitution—not “AI” versus “no AI” as a single category. A hint, counterargument, or request to diagnose an error keeps the learner engaged; a ready-made solution can bypass the reasoning the task was designed to teach.

Postgraduate business students: informative but narrow
A mixed-method study recorded by the University of Bristol examined 107 UK postgraduate business students and the influence of AI text generators on critical thinking. The sample is useful evidence about that group, but it cannot be generalized automatically to younger pupils, other subjects, different countries, or every pattern of use.
Adoption and time savings are not skill measures
National Bureau of Economic Research research published in 2024 estimated that generative AI assisted with 1%–5% of work hours, while respondents reported time savings equivalent to 1.4% of total work hours. Those figures describe adoption and perceived efficiency; they do not demonstrate either cognitive-skill gains or losses.
Expert consensus: vulnerability and enhancement are both plausible
A 2026 University of Minnesota expert-consensus panel concluded that students with strong content knowledge, critical thinking, and self-regulation can use generative AI as a tutor, study partner, or editor. It also judged all students susceptible to cognitive offloading and skill decay when they use AI to think for them. For problem solving, the panel rated both vulnerability and enhancement as plausible while rating the evidence strength relatively low. The field has not settled the causal question.
How AI use can weaken independent thinking
Cognitive offloading removes practice
Cognitive offloading means transferring mental work to an external system. With an AI assistant, that may include recalling facts, breaking a task into steps, generating explanations, doing calculations, or proposing a complete solution. Offloading can be sensible when the goal is speed or access, but repeated offloading of foundational work reduces opportunities to retrieve knowledge and practice planning.

The risk is not that every delegated action causes permanent damage. It is that a person may stop noticing which abilities they are no longer exercising. A writer who always asks for an outline may become less fluent at organizing an argument; a student who always requests a solved equation may be unable to recognize which operation should come next without assistance.
Confidence can reduce scrutiny
The Microsoft findings connect greater confidence in AI with less perceived critical-thinking effort. A fluent, confident-sounding answer can create an impression of competence even when the system is wrong, incomplete, biased, or answering a different question. Trust becomes dangerous when it replaces checking rather than motivating it.
Verification is a different skill from generation
AI may reduce time spent locating information, but it increases the need to verify accuracy, relevance, provenance, bias, and fit with the user’s context. Verification requires domain knowledge: without knowing what a good answer should contain, a user may be unable to spot a plausible error. In high-stakes work, accepting an unverified response can transfer risk to customers, patients, students, or the public.
Productive struggle can vanish
Early attempts are often where people identify assumptions, encounter misconceptions, and build durable mental models. If AI supplies a polished response before the user has wrestled with the problem, the task may be completed without that learning process. The immediate result improves while the ability to reproduce it later remains untested.

How AI can support critical thinking and problem solving
Use it as a tutor, not an answer vending machine
AI can ask Socratic questions, provide a small hint, generate a worked example with a different set of numbers, or point out a gap in an argument. These uses preserve a role for the learner’s own decisions. The person still has to select a strategy, test it, and explain why it works.
Generate challenges and counterarguments
Asking an AI system to produce objections, alternative hypotheses, edge cases, or tests of an assumption can widen the search space. The user must still judge which objections are valid. Treat the output as a set of candidates for examination, not as an authoritative analysis.
Make revision visible
When AI helps edit prose or code, compare the original and revised versions. Require an explanation of each consequential change and reject edits that alter meaning, evidence, or requirements. This turns assistance into a lesson about clarity and correctness rather than an invisible replacement of the author’s judgment.

Substitution versus scaffolding
| Dimension | Substitution pattern | Scaffolding pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Timing | AI is used before the person makes an attempt. | The person tries first, then requests targeted help. |
| Request | “Give me the answer” or “write the whole report.” | “Give me a hint,” “find a flaw,” or “show a comparable example.” |
| Verification | Fluent output is accepted at face value. | Claims, calculations, sources, and assumptions are checked independently. |
| Ownership | The user cannot explain the reasoning or adapt it. | The user explains the logic and changes it under a new constraint. |
| Practice | Foundational retrieval and problem solving are outsourced repeatedly. | Some deliberate no-AI practice remains. |
| Assessment | Only the polished final answer is judged. | Attempts, drafts, explanations, and transfer to a new problem are examined. |
A practical workflow that protects your skills
- Define the goal and constraints. Write down what must be true, who the audience is, and what counts as a correct result.
- Attempt the task unaided. Sketch an argument, solve the first step, or list the evidence you already know. This creates a baseline for comparison.
- Ask for the least assistance that will unblock you. Request a hint, a question, a counterexample, or diagnosis of a specific error before requesting a complete answer.
- Interrogate the response. Ask which assumptions it made, where it could fail, what evidence supports each important claim, and how the answer changes under a new condition.
- Verify externally. Check primary documents, calculations, quotations, dates, and relevant expertise. A citation supplied by an AI system is a lead to inspect, not proof.
- Reconstruct the reasoning yourself. Close the tool and explain the solution in your own words, or solve a parallel problem with altered facts.
- Edit for purpose. Ensure the final work answers the actual question, meets the requirements, and reflects your judgment rather than merely preserving fluent wording.
- Schedule no-AI practice. Keep regular sessions for retrieval, calculation, writing, and problem solving without assistance, especially for foundational skills.
Guardrails for schools and universities
Teachers can separate learning activities from production activities. A lesson might permit AI for brainstorming after an individual attempt, while requiring unaided recall or calculation for a later check. Assessment should sample the process: collect drafts, ask for an oral explanation, inspect revision decisions, and present a novel problem that cannot be solved by copying the earlier response.
Best Value
Rubrics can award marks for defining the problem, selecting evidence, checking an AI suggestion, identifying uncertainty, and transferring the method to a new case. Clear disclosure rules are preferable to blanket assumptions: students should know when assistance is allowed, what must be their own work, and how use will be evaluated.
Guardrails for workplaces
Organizations should train people in three activities the Microsoft study identifies as increasingly important: information verification, response integration, and task stewardship. Training should also preserve the underlying skills that AI makes easy to neglect. Rotate some assignments that require independent analysis, maintain review by a qualified person for consequential decisions, and document which parts of a deliverable were machine-assisted.
Match the control to the stakes. A low-risk draft may need a quick factual check; a legal, financial, medical, safety, or public-facing decision needs authoritative sources, domain review, and a clear record of assumptions. Time saved by automation is not evidence that the resulting judgment is sound.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to tell whether your own use is becoming harmful
- You open the AI tool before identifying the problem or defining success.
- You accept an answer because it sounds confident, even when you cannot name its evidence.
- You are unable to explain the result without reopening the conversation.
- You struggle with a similar task when the wording, numbers, or constraints change.
- You no longer practice basic retrieval, calculation, writing, or planning.
- Your review consists mainly of grammar or formatting rather than checking logic and facts.
A simple transfer test is revealing: after using AI, close it and solve a parallel problem, defend the answer aloud, and list the conditions under which it would fail. If you cannot do those things, the tool probably completed more of the learning than you did.
What remains unknown
There is no definitive longitudinal statistic showing permanent critical-thinking or problem-solving decline from AI use. The workplace evidence is self-reported and focused on frequent English-speaking knowledge workers; the postgraduate evidence covers 107 students; experimental findings are tied to particular tasks; and the European Commission explicitly calls for more research. Results may differ by age, prior knowledge, subject, task stakes, interface design, and the quality of supervision.
That uncertainty is a reason for disciplined use, not a reason to assume either catastrophe or guaranteed improvement. Track whether people can explain, adapt, verify, and reproduce work—not merely whether they can produce a polished answer quickly.
The standard to use
AI use is helping when it leaves the human better able to reason without the tool: clearer about the goal, more alert to evidence, capable of explaining the method, and ready to transfer it to a new situation. It is weakening skills when convenience consistently replaces attempts, verification, and independent practice. The decisive question is not whether AI appeared in the workflow, but who performed the thinking that the next task will require.
