What Google’s 48% figure actually measures
In a July 23, 2026 Chromium post, Chrome software engineer Petr Čermák said Google had reduced the frequency of janky scrolls in Chrome on Android by 48% between 2023 and 2026 through pipeline instrumentation and targeted architectural optimizations. “Janky scrolls” refers to scrolling that appears uneven or stuttery. The reported reduction is in their frequency, not a 48% increase in browser speed or a promise that every device will feel smoother by the same amount. Google’s post does not identify three settings that produce this result.

Chromium separately reported a “2x reduction in visible jank while scrolling slowly” in a 2023 post, following engineering work involving tuning and a 1€ filter. That report concerned a different timeframe and description; it should not be combined with the later 48% statistic or treated as a personal before-and-after test. Read the 2023 Chromium post.

Useful Chrome steps that Google does recommend
Google’s Android Chrome help offers practical troubleshooting steps, including closing inactive tabs and choosing a page-preloading setting. These may help with tab load or page-loading behavior, but Google does not quantify them as a way to make scrolling 50% smoother. See Chrome’s Android performance guidance.
- Close tabs you are not using. This is a straightforward tab-management step; it is not a guaranteed scrolling-performance improvement.
- Review page preloading. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Settings, then Privacy and security, and look for Preload pages. Available choices can vary by Chrome version. Preloading concerns page loading, not a proven fix for scroll jank.
- Avoid running multiple apps at once while troubleshooting. Google’s help also suggests this as a practical step when Chrome is slow.
- Reset Chrome settings only if needed. Google provides this as a troubleshooting option, not routine maintenance. Review its instructions before proceeding. See how to reset Chrome settings on Android.
Why Chrome flags are not ordinary settings
Chrome flags are experimental controls, separate from normal Chrome settings. Google says most users should not need to modify them and warns that changing flags can risk browser data, security, or privacy. If you are troubleshooting and still choose to experiment, Google’s guidance is to read a flag’s description, change one at a time, then relaunch Chrome. If a problem appears, reset all flags and relaunch. A flag’s presence does not mean Google recommends enabling it for everyday use.
