What the “12GB” figure means
MacRumors reported in 2026 that Apple Intelligence models use about 12 GB or more, with some users reporting larger totals. That figure is not an Apple-published storage guarantee, and the space RemoveMacAI can recover depends on the models present on your Mac. The project says its status command reports model sizes, though some sizes may be unknown.

Check your available storage before and after any change in System Settings > General > Storage. Apple documents this path for macOS Ventura 13 and later. Its storage page describes System Data as a general category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit elsewhere; the category itself does not establish how much space Apple Intelligence models occupy.

Removing models is a functionality choice, not just a cleanup. MacRumors lists these affected features: Siri-related AI features, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT integration, summaries, smart replies, inline predictions, Photos Clean Up, Spatial Photos, and Xcode predictive completion. Apple’s macOS 27 page describes Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features, but the specific removal procedure is documented by RemoveMacAI, not Apple.

How to inspect and preview RemoveMacAI
RemoveMacAI’s README documents these commands:

Use the status check first, then preview the proposed changes. If the space reported for your Mac does not justify losing the affected capabilities, stop before applying them.

Install and run the utility
These are the project’s instructions, not an Apple-supported removal workflow. The README’s installer command fetches the latest release, checks its SHA-256 checksum, and runs it from a temporary directory. It also documents manual download and checksum verification, plus a Homebrew option. Because the README may change, get the exact current command from the RemoveMacAI project README rather than copying an installation command from an older article.
- Open Terminal and use the installation method and exact command shown in the project’s README.
- Run
removemacai status, then preview withremovemacai off --dry-run. - If you choose to proceed, run the disable command specified in the current README. The utility displays the current state and asks you to confirm.
- When prompted, open System Settings and approve the utility’s configuration profile. The project says model removal follows this approval.
- Check the command’s result and run
removemacai statusagain to review the resulting state and any reported model sizes.
The project README says: “All changes can be reverted.” That is the project’s statement, not an Apple guarantee.

What to do if removal fails or you want to reverse it
The README says that if model removal fails or cannot be confirmed, the command exits with an error and leaves the configuration profile active. Read any warnings and check status before retrying; do not assume that an error means the models were removed.
To reverse the documented changes, the project provides removemacai revert. Consult the current README for its instructions and verify the resulting feature state afterward.

RemoveMacAI or Apple’s built-in storage cleanup?
Apple’s general storage guidance is the lower-impact starting point if you want to free space without deliberately disabling Apple Intelligence. It does not document RemoveMacAI or removal of Apple Intelligence models by this script.

- Review storage in System Settings > General > Storage, then remove files you no longer need.
- Delete unneeded downloads or media, uninstall unused apps, move libraries to external storage, and empty the Bin.
- Apple says safe mode may temporarily clear certain system caches; those caches are automatically recreated as needed. This is a temporary cache measure, not a documented way to remove Apple Intelligence models.
RemoveMacAI is the more targeted route if you knowingly want to disable selected Apple Intelligence functionality and remove its downloaded models. Apple’s cleanup steps are preferable when you want to retain those features and reclaim space from ordinary files instead.

Its README says the installer verifies a checksum and describes release provenance attestation. Those are project-described safeguards, not an independent review or a guarantee of safety.
