Sometimes—but there is no universal percentage or number of hours. Disabling notifications can reduce battery use when alerts repeatedly wake the screen or trigger sound and vibration. The result depends on the phone, the apps, how often they alert, and whether those alerts are visually or audibly delivered. Android itself says that constant notifications can drain battery and recommends keeping only essential alerts, but it does not promise a specific saving.
There is an important limit to that advice: notifications do not automatically make the entire phone leave Android’s Doze idle mode. Turning off alerts can reduce alert-related activity without being a guaranteed cure for battery drain.

What turning off notifications can—and cannot—save
A notification is an alert the operating system presents on behalf of an app. Depending on your settings, the phone may light the display, play a sound, vibrate, show an icon, or display a message on the lock screen. Each of those visible or physical effects uses some energy. Android’s battery guidance therefore says, “Constant notifications can drain your battery,” and recommends customizing notifications so you receive only essential alerts (Android: How to Save Battery Life and Stop It From Draining).

The activity that matters is the alert behavior
- Screen wakeups: Lighting the display is usually more consequential than simply placing an icon in the status bar.
- Sound: Notification tones use the speaker and may cause repeated activity when alerts are frequent.
- Vibration: Haptic motors consume energy, particularly when many alerts arrive close together.
- App processing: An app may briefly process incoming data so it can create the notification. The amount varies by app and message type.
Removing promotional alerts, social-media chatter, and other low-value interruptions targets these activities while preserving alerts that you need for calls, authentication codes, calendars, or safety.
Notifications do not defeat Doze by themselves
It is inaccurate to say that every notification wakes the whole phone or prevents Android from entering its idle power-saving state. The Android Open Source Project states: “Notifications don’t cause the device to exit from Doze.” Read the full explanation in AOSP’s Platform power management with Doze documentation.
Doze batches some background work while a device is unused, stationary, and not charging. A notification can still be delivered under Android’s rules, and an app may receive limited time to handle an important message, but the arrival of an alert is not the same as the device abandoning Doze. This distinction matters when diagnosing battery drain: disabling notifications may reduce screen, sound, or vibration activity without changing the phone’s basic idle-management behavior.

How Android receives notifications
Notifications are not necessarily delivered through one permanent network connection per app. Android Developers explains that Firebase Cloud Messaging can use a shared connection, avoiding the need for every app to maintain its own separate persistent connection (Optimize for Doze and App Standby).

When a message needs handling during Doze or App Standby, Android can allow temporary network access and a partial wakelock so the app can process it. That work is normally brief and depends on the message and app design. It does not mean that each installed app continuously runs a full-time connection or that all notification traffic has the same battery cost.
Consequently, turning off a notification permission may stop the user-facing alert, but it does not necessarily stop every background operation associated with the app. If an app is synchronizing excessively, using location, uploading media, or performing other work, notification settings alone may not resolve the drain.
Which notification setting should you choose?
Android gives you several levels of control. The names and exact screens differ by phone manufacturer and Android version; Google’s instructions explicitly note that settings vary by device (Google Android Help: Control notifications on Android).
| Choice | What changes | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn off all notifications for selected apps | The chosen app cannot post normal notifications. | Shopping, games, marketing, or other apps whose alerts are never useful. | You can miss a time-sensitive alert from that app. |
| Turn off selected categories | Only specific channels, such as promotions or live updates, are blocked where the phone supports categories. | You want messages or security alerts but not advertising and recommendations. | Category names and available controls differ by app and device. |
| Keep notifications but make them silent | The alert can remain in the shade without sound or vibration; display behavior depends on your settings. | You need a record of updates but do not need an immediate interruption. | Silent notifications can still contribute to screen activity if your lock-screen or display settings show them. |
| Leave notifications enabled | Apps retain their normal alert behavior. | Calls, two-factor codes, travel changes, work messages, and safety alerts. | Frequent alerts may cause more screen, sound, or vibration activity. |
| Battery Saver | A system-wide power mode changes background behavior and may delay notifications. | You need broader emergency battery conservation. | Delayed alerts are a system-level trade-off, not proof that selected notification permissions were draining the battery. |
How to turn off unwanted Android notifications
Block every notification from one app
- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications, then App notifications (the wording may differ).
- Select the app that sends unwanted alerts.
- Turn off its notification permission or disable the listed notification switch.
- Repeat for other high-volume apps, starting with promotional or nonessential ones.
Some phones also let you touch and hold a notification in the notification shade, tap Settings, and change that app’s permission directly. If you cannot find the same labels, search Settings for “notifications” and open the app-specific result.

Disable only notification categories
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Choose an app.
- Look for notification categories, channels, or individual types.
- Turn off categories such as promotions, recommendations, or marketing while leaving messages, account security, or calls enabled.
Category controls are not universal. An app may expose several channels, a single combined switch, or no user-selectable categories at all.
Make an alert silent instead of blocking it
- Touch and hold one of the app’s notifications.
- Choose Silent if that option appears, or open the app’s notification settings and select the silent behavior.
- Check lock-screen settings if you also want to prevent the display from lighting for that alert.
This approach preserves a notification in the shade while removing sound and vibration. It is useful when you want to review updates later rather than be interrupted immediately.
How to tell whether notifications are actually using significant battery
Do not assume that the most visible app is the biggest battery consumer. Check the phone’s own measurements before changing important alerts.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery or Battery and device care, depending on the manufacturer.
- Open Battery usage or the app-by-app usage list.
- Look for apps with unusually high background or total consumption.
- Compare the list with your notification history and with how often each app alerts.
Battery screens differ in what they report: some separate foreground, background, screen, and system use, while others show a percentage since the last charge. Treat the numbers as a way to identify candidates, not as a laboratory measurement of one notification.

A practical test you can run on your own phone
Because Android does not publish a universal saving estimate, your own usage pattern is the most relevant evidence. Use a controlled change rather than disabling everything at once.
- Record the battery percentage, screen-on time, and the apps shown in Battery usage.
- For one or two days, disable only promotional or otherwise unwanted notification categories.
- Use the phone normally, including the same approximate charging schedule and typical network conditions.
- Record the same battery information at the end of the test.
- If there is no meaningful change, restore the settings and investigate the highest-consuming app, screen brightness, cellular signal, location use, or background activity instead.
A short test can be noisy. Changes in gaming, video calls, camera use, weak cellular reception, temperature, or screen-on time can outweigh any reduction in alert activity. Look for a repeatable pattern over several comparable charge cycles rather than treating one day as proof.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When turning off notifications is most likely to help
- You receive many alerts that wake the screen throughout the day.
- An app produces repeated sounds or vibrations for low-value events.
- Several apps send simultaneous promotional campaigns or live-update alerts.
- You leave the phone where the screen repeatedly lights even though you rarely act on the messages.
In these cases, disabling categories or making them silent removes the part of the notification experience most likely to consume extra energy and interrupt you.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →When it probably will not fix the drain
- The phone’s battery is aging or physically degraded.
- Screen brightness, video, gaming, navigation, or camera use dominates the battery chart.
- An app is doing heavy background synchronization or location work independent of its visible alerts.
- The device has poor cellular reception and is spending more power maintaining a connection.
- The phone is hot, recently updated, or running a process that is rebuilding or indexing data.
In these situations, notification changes may still improve convenience, but they should not be presented as a guaranteed battery repair. Use the battery-usage screen to prioritize the cause that consumes the most power.

Battery Saver is a separate decision
Android’s Battery Saver mode changes broader system behavior and may delay notifications. Android’s battery guidance documents that trade-off in Tips to Improve Android Battery Life & Fix Battery Drain.
That delay is not the same as turning off an app’s notification permission. Battery Saver can restrict or postpone background work across the device, whereas a notification setting targets one app or category. Choose Battery Saver when preserving remaining charge is more important than immediate background updates; choose app-level controls when you want normal operation for essential services.
What you give up by disabling everything
Blocking all notifications can save some alert-related activity, but it also removes timely awareness. You may miss a one-time login code, a fraud warning, a calendar change, a delivery update, an emergency message, or a direct message that you expected to see promptly. A selective approach is usually safer: keep calls, account security, messages, navigation, and other genuinely time-sensitive categories, then remove marketing and repetitive updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReview the choice after installing a new app, changing jobs or travel plans, or enabling a two-factor authentication method. Notification categories can change when an app updates, and a previously useful alert can become noise.
Bottom line
Turning off Android notifications can save battery when frequent alerts cause screen wakeups, sounds, or vibrations, but the amount is device- and app-dependent and has not been established as a universal percentage or runtime gain. Notifications themselves do not force a device out of Doze. Start by disabling unwanted apps or categories, check your phone’s Battery usage screen, and keep essential alerts enabled. If the battery chart points elsewhere, notification changes are unlikely to solve the main problem.
