Is Star Wars Zero Company worth buying? What to know about its tactics gameplay

Yes—if you want a substantial, single-player, turn-based Star Wars tactics game. Star Wars Zero Company puts you in command of Hawks, a former Republic officer, and a hand-picked team during the twilight of the Clone Wars. Its appeal is the combination of deliberate squad combat, recruit and loadout decisions, investigations, and relationships that can affect how the team fights. It is a weaker fit if you dislike turn-based battles, need a short campaign, or expect multiplayer.

The strongest published hands-on assessment available here is TechRadar’s PC review from August 2026. It praises the tactics, customization, cast, and story, while reporting an underused antagonist and audio-sync bugs. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not proof of identical performance or consensus on every platform. EA’s own campaign estimate is about 30–40 hours for most players; the reviewer separately reported playing for just over 40 hours.

What Star Wars Zero Company is

Electronic Arts and Bit Reactor, working with Lucasfilm Games, describe Zero Company as a single-player, turn-based tactics game set near the end of the Clone Wars. You lead Hawks and a squad of unconventional professionals against the Separatist-aligned Infinite Coil. The story combines tactical operations with investigations, so missions are not presented as a sequence of battles without context.

Hawks is a former Republic officer rather than an established film character. You can change Hawks’s combat specialization and appearance. Other squad members can receive tailored appearances, loadouts, and abilities, giving you room to build a team that reflects your preferred approach instead of using an unchanging cast with fixed roles.

  • Command an elite squad through a gritty and authentic Star Wars story set in the twilight of the Clone Wars. Step into the role of Hawks, a former Republic officer leading Zero Company against an emerging threat that could consume the galaxy.

Between missions, the squad operates from The Den on the Ring of Kafrene. StarWars.com describes a galaxy map in the Den where you choose strategic tasks and tactical missions. That makes the base more than a menu: it is the place where you decide what to pursue, prepare the roster, and develop the relationships that support later operations.

How the tactics gameplay works

Plan before you commit

Turn-based combat gives you time to consider positioning and action order. The useful mindset is to treat every turn as a short plan rather than clicking the first available attack. Before committing, identify the immediate objective, check which squad members can reach useful positions, and reserve options for the enemy’s response. The game’s customization systems mean preparation matters as much as the individual encounter.

Loadouts and abilities should be chosen for the mission you are about to undertake, not simply left in a default state. A squad member’s appearance is cosmetic, but the selected specialization, equipment, and abilities determine the tools available when the operation starts. Because squad bonds can unlock combat synergies, roster selection also has a social dimension: a combination that works well together may be preferable to assembling the strongest-looking individuals in isolation.

Fight as a squad, not as disconnected heroes

Zero Company’s central promise is coordinated squad tactics. A turn is valuable when several characters contribute to the same plan—taking positions that support one another, setting up an attack, or using an ability that creates an opening for a partner. The exact optimal sequence will depend on your difficulty, mission objective, and chosen abilities, so there is no single universal rotation to memorize.

That design favors players who enjoy evaluating trade-offs. Advancing may complete an objective sooner but expose a character; spending an ability now may solve a threat but leave fewer options for the next phase. The game is built around making those decisions repeatedly rather than relying on reflexes or aiming speed.

Investigations add a different tempo

The campaign includes investigations alongside tactical operations. Investigations give the story space to examine the Infinite Coil, Hawks, and the squad outside a firefight. They also help explain why you are selecting a particular task on the galaxy map instead of presenting every activity as a conventional combat mission.

Players who want a cinematic, character-led Star Wars story should find this structure more appealing than a tactics game that treats narrative as brief mission briefings. Conversely, anyone looking only for rapid combat may find the investigative and relationship material slows the pace.

Relationships can have mechanical value

Squad relationships are not only dialogue flavor. EA says bonds between squad members can unlock combat synergies. In practical terms, time spent developing the team can improve how particular characters function together in battle. That gives you a reason to pay attention to the social side of the campaign even when your immediate priority is the next tactical objective.

The system also supports replay-minded experimentation. Changing who works together, which abilities they carry, and how Hawks is specialized can produce a different tactical identity without requiring a separate game mode.

The Den is your planning hub

At The Den, you prepare the squad between missions and use the galaxy map to select strategic tasks and tactical missions. A sensible preparation routine is to review the next available activity, adjust the roster and loadouts to match it, and then consider whether a relationship-building choice is worth making before deployment. The base therefore connects story, progression, and combat preparation in one place.

Campaign length and what that means for value

EA Help estimates the main story at approximately 30–40 hours for most players. EA qualifies that estimate by pointing to difficulty and experience with turn-based tactics: a newcomer may take longer while an experienced player on a lower difficulty may finish sooner. It is a publisher estimate, not a measured average from a player study.

TechRadar’s reviewer reported spending just over 40 hours with the PC version. That figure describes one reviewer’s playthrough and should not be treated as a typical completion time. Taken together, the available information indicates a full-length campaign rather than a short weekend game, with total time shaped by your pace, difficulty, and how much optional preparation or relationship content you pursue.

The length is a benefit if you want a campaign that gives its squad and story room to develop. It is a drawback if you prefer compact games or have limited time for a single ongoing narrative. There is no evidence here of an online endgame designed to extend the campaign after the story, so buy it for the single-player experience you expect to play, not for an indefinite service-style content loop.

Platforms, editions, and buying options

EA Help lists the game for PC through the EA app, Steam, and the Epic Games Store, plus PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It has no online or competitive multiplayer, online co-op, local or split-screen co-op, or other online social features. Every mode described in the available information is part of the single-player campaign.

Option What you get Availability or price qualification
Standard Edition Base game PC digital storefronts; PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. EA Help says physical copies are available from selected retailers for the two consoles.
Deluxe Edition Base game, cosmetic content, and weapon themes EA’s launch announcement stated a $59.99 suggested retail price on PC and $69.99 on consoles. Those are launch SRPs, not guaranteed current prices.
Collector’s Edition Base game package with physical collectibles, including a Star Wars Zero Company-themed Hasbro Black Series Thermal Detonator, Steelbook, desk mat, and other contents EA’s announcement stated a $299.99 SRP and identified Limited Run Games as the retailer. Check current stock, contents, and eligibility before ordering.

Deluxe does not add a different campaign, extra classes, or other gameplay content in the information supplied by EA; its stated additions are cosmetic content and weapon themes. If you want the game itself at the lowest cost, compare the current Standard price on your chosen platform. If you value character or weapon presentation and the price difference is small, Deluxe may be reasonable, but its extras do not change the tactics systems.

EA Help gives August 27, 2026 as the release date. EA’s launch announcement is dated August 28, 2026 and says the game is “now available”; that is an announcement date, not evidence of two separate launches.

Physical-copy considerations

Physical Standard Edition copies are specified for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through selected retailers. The platform information identifies PC storefront purchases as digital; it does not establish a physical PC edition. Console stock, regional availability, and retailer policies can change, so confirm the listing for your country before paying.

Who should buy Star Wars Zero Company?

It is a strong match if you:

  • Enjoy turn-based tactics where positioning, action selection, and team composition matter more than reflexes.
  • Want a single-player Star Wars story with a new lead character and an original squad rather than a retelling of a film plot.
  • Like customizing appearances, specializations, abilities, and loadouts.
  • Prefer campaigns that combine combat with investigations and character relationships.
  • Have time for a roughly 30–40-hour main story, with the possibility of taking longer depending on difficulty and play style.

It is a poor match if you:

  • Need real-time action, twitch shooting, or uninterrupted momentum.
  • Are specifically shopping for co-op, competitive multiplayer, split-screen, or social online features.
  • Want a short campaign that can be finished in a few evenings.
  • Care more about a large physical collector package than the underlying game.

TechRadar’s Demi Williams recommended the game for Star Wars fans, turn-based-combat players, and people seeking a cinematic story. The same review cautioned readers who dislike turn-based play or want a shorter experience. It also listed an underused antagonist and audio-sync bugs as drawbacks. Treat those points as that review’s judgments and observations from August 2026; they do not establish a universal opinion or confirm the status of a later patch on every platform.

A practical way to approach the first missions

The following routine uses the systems EA describes and avoids assuming a fixed class guide or a particular mission solution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the objective before choosing a team. Decide whether the task emphasizes a tactical operation, an investigation, or both. Your objective should determine whom you bring and which abilities you value.
  2. Review each recruit’s loadout and abilities. Do not assume a character’s default setup is best for every mission. Tailor equipment and abilities to the job, and remember that Hawks’s specialization can also be changed.
  3. Consider bonds when assembling the roster. If two characters have a useful relationship or can unlock a combat synergy, weigh that benefit against the coverage another recruit would provide.
  4. Use the opening turn to establish a plan. Identify safe positions, likely threats, and the next objective. Avoid spending every useful ability immediately if doing so leaves no response to an unexpected enemy move.
  5. Keep the squad’s actions connected. When possible, make one character’s move create value for another—by improving the team’s position, enabling an ability, or protecting the member who must complete the objective.
  6. Return to The Den with a purpose. After an operation, review available strategic tasks and tactical missions on the galaxy map, then update appearances, loadouts, abilities, and relationship choices before deploying again.
  7. Adjust difficulty to your experience. EA’s 30–40-hour estimate varies with difficulty and familiarity. If the systems are new, a lower setting can let you learn positioning and squad interactions; experienced tactics players may prefer a higher challenge.

This approach will not remove the need to react to mission-specific conditions. Its value is organizational: it ensures that customization, relationships, and the galaxy map are part of your decision-making rather than features you ignore until late in the campaign.

Technical and ownership cautions

The available PC review reported audio-sync bugs. Because those observations came from a reviewer’s August 2026 playthrough, check current patch notes and platform-specific player reports if technical reliability is your deciding factor. Do not assume a problem seen on PC will occur identically on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and do not assume a later update has fixed it without current confirmation.

The game is not described as requiring an online subscription, and no online social modes are listed. You should still check the store page for your region for account, download, and storage requirements before purchase; those details are not established in the available information.

Is the Collector’s Edition worth considering?

The Collector’s Edition is a separate value question from the game. Its announced $299.99 SRP is far above the stated Deluxe SRPs, and the documented extras are physical collectibles: a themed Thermal Detonator, Steelbook, desk mat, and additional contents. That premium makes sense primarily for a collector who specifically wants those objects and accepts the risk that stock, bundle contents, or regional eligibility may differ by the time of purchase.

If your priority is playing the campaign, Standard provides the base game and Deluxe adds only the listed cosmetic and weapon-theme extras. Choose the Collector’s Edition for the physical items, not for additional tactical missions or a longer story.

Bottom line

Star Wars Zero Company is worth buying for players who want a substantial, character-driven, single-player tactics campaign and are comfortable making deliberate turn-based decisions. Its squad customization, investigations, relationship-based synergies, and Den-based planning give the Clone Wars setting a game structure beyond simple firefights. Buy cautiously if you dislike turn-based combat, need multiplayer, or want a brief experience; and if PC technical issues matter, verify current patch status rather than relying on an August 2026 review.
