Not by itself. The Hubble tension is a persistent mismatch between measurements of today’s expansion rate from the nearby universe and the lower rate inferred from early-universe observations using the standard cosmological model, ΛCDM. It is a serious problem that needs explaining, but current evidence does not prove that ΛCDM is wrong—or establish which measurements, assumptions, or physics account for the mismatch.
What the Hubble tension actually compares
The Hubble constant, written H0, describes the universe’s expansion rate today. On sufficiently large scales, more distant galaxies recede faster in proportion to their distance. H0 is usually reported in kilometres per second per megaparsec (km/s/Mpc).

The tension is between two different routes to estimating that rate. One measures distances in the relatively nearby universe and uses them to infer H0 directly. The other measures the cosmic microwave background (CMB), radiation from the early universe, then infers what H0 must be today by fitting a cosmological model and evolving it forward. The second value is therefore conditional on the model used; the two results are not measurements made with one shared method.

NASA’s overview gives rounded ranges of about 70–76 km/s/Mpc for space-telescope measurements and 67–68 km/s/Mpc for CMB-derived results. Those are broad illustrative ranges, not universal confidence intervals, and they do not mean every measurement within either group agrees with every other one.

How the two main measurement routes work
The local distance ladder
A distance ladder builds up distances in stages. Nearby geometric measurements calibrate Cepheid variable stars. Cepheids in more distant galaxies then calibrate Type Ia supernovae. Those supernovae, observed at greater distances alongside their redshifts, help determine the expansion rate.
Each calibration step can pass uncertainty to the next. Potential complications include how dust and host galaxies affect supernova observations and whether supernova properties change with redshift. The Particle Data Group’s 2024 review discusses these approaches and possible systematics.

The early-universe inference
The CMB records conditions in the early universe. To infer today’s H0 from it, researchers fit a cosmological model to the radiation data and use that model to connect early conditions with the present-day expansion rate. This is a powerful method, but its answer depends on the assumed cosmology and on which data sets are combined.

| Result | Reported H0 or discrepancy | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| H0 Distance Network Collaboration, reported by the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian in 2026 | 73.50 ± 0.81 km/s/Mpc; just over 1% precision. The report gives an approximately 5–7σ difference from recent CMB and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) determinations. | A local result combining multiple distance indicators and accounting for shared uncertainties using covariance weighting. It strengthens the local side of the discrepancy; it is not, on its own, a proof of new physics. |
| ACT DR6 analysis, authors’ 2025 NASA NTRS record | In selected extension fits, H0 was 69.9 (+0.8/−1.5) km/s/Mpc for early dark energy, 69.1 ± 0.5 for primordial magnetic fields, and 69.6 ± 1.0 for modified recombination history. | These are extension-dependent values, not the baseline ΛCDM result. Across its tested models and data combinations, the analysis found no statistically significant preference for departure from baseline ΛCDM. |
| SN H0pe, reported by NASA in 2024 | 75.4 (+8.1/−5.5) km/s/Mpc. | An independent gravitational-lensing time-delay measurement using a multiply imaged Type Ia supernova. NASA described it as only the second measurement using this method and the first using a standard candle; its broad uncertainty makes it a cross-check, not a precision tie-breaker. |
| SH0ES versus Planck, summarized by the Particle Data Group in 2024 | About a 5σ discrepancy, as described in that review. | A dated summary of that comparison, not the significance reported for the 2026 distance-network result. |
Why the 2026 local network matters
The H0 Distance Network combines overlapping indicators: Cepheids, the tip of the red giant branch, Mira variables, megamasers, Type Ia and Type II supernovae, surface-brightness fluctuations, Tully–Fisher measurements, and the Fundamental Plane. Because indicators can share calibration uncertainties, the collaboration used covariance weighting to account for those relationships. The result makes an explanation based solely on one overlooked local measurement less persuasive, while not eliminating every possible correlated systematic.
What the ACT DR6 analysis adds
ACT DR6 tested baseline ΛCDM and extensions using CMB measurements, with data combinations that included Planck, DESI Year-1 BAO, WMAP, BOSS, and Pantheon+. Its finding of no statistically significant preference for departure from baseline ΛCDM applies to those tested models and combinations. The fact that some extensions can yield different H0 values does not mean those extensions were favored by the analysis.

What Hubble and Webb cross-checks rule out
NASA reported in 2024 that sharper infrared observations from the James Webb Space Telescope helped check Cepheid measurements against Hubble. The cross-check reduced concern that stellar crowding or visible-light dust effects could explain the whole discrepancy. SH0ES lead Adam Riess characterized the result by saying that a measurement error was not the cause “with very high confidence.” That is his assessment of the Cepheid cross-check, not evidence that every conceivable systematic in every method has been eliminated.
Does this mean ΛCDM is falsified?
No. A persistent mismatch is evidence that the measurements, their uncertainties, or the assumptions connecting early-universe observations to today deserve scrutiny. It does not by itself identify which explanation is correct. Possibilities still include more complex correlated measurement systematics, assumptions involved in early-universe inference, or physics beyond baseline ΛCDM. The cited results do not establish a final resolution.

The distinction is important: the local network reports a discrepancy with recent CMB and BAO determinations, while ACT DR6 finds no statistically significant preference for the particular extensions it tested. Those findings address different methods and questions. Neither cancels the other out, and neither demonstrates that all possible new-physics explanations have been ruled in or out.
How to evaluate a new H0 claim
When a new result is announced, check what its number actually represents rather than comparing headline values alone:
- Method: Is it a direct local measurement, or an early-universe inference made under a specified cosmology?
- Inputs and anchors: Which distance indicators, calibration steps, or external data sets were used?
- Uncertainty: What is the reported error, and how does it compare with the difference being discussed?
- Shared errors: Does the analysis account for correlated or shared systematics across indicators?
- Model scope: If extensions to ΛCDM were tested, which ones and with which data combinations? A result for one set of models is not a verdict on every possible extension.
A headline H0 value without these details can make unlike results appear more directly comparable than they are.
