Huawei says Mate 30 series and later phones do not come with Google Mobile Services (GMS) or Google apps preinstalled, and its China product page lists the Mate 90 Pro Max with HarmonyOS 7.0. What Google support should you expect?
Huawei’s support guidance says Mate 30 series and subsequent models do not have GMS or Google apps preinstalled. The company attributes this to Google authorization and notes that installing Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) does not change whether Google authorizes GMS for a device. The guidance is general to the Mate series; Huawei’s China product page identifies the Mate 90 Pro Max and lists HarmonyOS 7.0. The available product information does not establish whether a separately marketed regional version has different software or Google certification.

Google explains that GMS is a licensed package separate from the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Google also says the Play Store, Play Protect, and core Google apps are available only on Play Protect-certified devices. In other words, being able to run Android-related software or access a Google website does not itself make a phone GMS-certified.
Can you use Google apps in a browser?
Huawei’s stated workaround is to try Google apps’ web versions. A browser may be enough for some tasks, but Huawei does not promise that every service or feature will work on this model. Web access should not be taken to mean app-equivalent notifications, background activity, sign-in integrations, payments, or location behavior; the available guidance does not test those functions on the Mate 90 Pro Max.

Does HMS Core replace Google Play Services?
No. HMS Core is Huawei’s own services framework, associated with Huawei services such as AppGallery, Cloud, and Health. Huawei warns that some Android apps requiring GMS Core may not work with HMS Core. It is therefore a separate ecosystem, not a universal substitute that makes Google-dependent apps compatible.
What to check before buying
- Native Google apps: Do not assume the phone includes the Play Store or licensed Google apps.
- Apps you rely on: Check compatibility for your specific banking, wallet, navigation, messaging, or streaming apps. The available sources do not establish how individual third-party apps behave on this model.
- Browser fallback: Confirm that the web version of each essential service covers the functions you need.
- Country and exact SKU: The Mate 90 Pro Max information cited here is from Huawei’s China consumer site. For a phone sold in another market, verify its precise model and Google certification rather than assuming the software is identical.
