Google documents it for pages with valid JobPosting structured data and for livestream pages where BroadcastEvent is embedded in a VideoObject. A successful API response means Google accepted a notification; it does not mean the page was crawled, indexed, or ranked.
What the Google Indexing API actually does
The Indexing API is a notification channel. Your application tells Google that an eligible URL was created, updated, or removed. Google can then use that signal when deciding whether to recrawl the URL or process its changed state. The API does not bypass Google’s normal crawling, quality, spam, security, or manual-action systems.

There are two notification types:
URL_UPDATEDsignals that an eligible page is new or has changed.URL_DELETEDsignals that an eligible page has been removed or should no longer be indexed.
An HTTP 200 response confirms that Google accepted the notification request. It is not an index-status result. The page can still be waiting for a crawl, fail validation, be excluded for quality or technical reasons, or never appear in search.

Which pages are eligible
Google’s eligibility wording is narrow and categorical. The API can be used only for these two documented page types:

The markup must describe the page accurately and satisfy Google’s structured-data requirements. Merely adding one of these schema types to an unrelated page does not make that page eligible. A job page still needs genuine job information, and a livestream page must represent an actual broadcast.
Which pages the API does not support
Ordinary URLs are outside the documented scope, even when they are important to a site or need rapid discovery. Do not use the Indexing API as an “instant indexing” endpoint for:
- Editorial articles, news stories, and blog posts
- Ecommerce product or category pages
- Service pages, local landing pages, and location pages
- Documentation, help-center articles, and forum threads
- Image, video, or other media URLs that do not meet the livestream requirement
- Home pages, tag pages, author archives, and other standard HTML content
Sending unsupported URLs can produce an error, and repeatedly attempting to work around the eligibility rule can put API access at risk. Google’s quickstart says submissions undergo rigorous spam detection and that abuse, including using multiple accounts to exceed quotas, can lead to access being revoked.

What a notification does—and does not—guarantee
A 200 response is an acceptance receipt
When Google returns HTTP 200, it has accepted the notification for processing. That response does not certify that the URL is reachable, that its structured data is valid, that Google crawled it, or that it entered the index. It also says nothing about ranking.
The metadata result is not an index report
Google provides a metadata method that records when notifications for a URL were received. Use it to confirm that your request reached Google and to inspect the notification history. Do not interpret a receipt timestamp as proof of a crawl or an indexing decision.

There is no deterministic indexing deadline
Google does not publish an indexing service-level agreement for these notifications. Even an eligible page can be delayed or excluded after crawling because of canonicalization, duplicate content, access restrictions, low quality, spam signals, security problems, or other Search systems.
How to set up and send an eligible notification
Use this sequence for a site that genuinely has qualifying job or livestream pages.
- Validate the page first. Confirm that the target URL is fully qualified, publicly reachable, and carries the correct
JobPostingor livestreamBroadcastEventmarkup. Fix structured-data errors before sending a notification. - Enable the Indexing API in Google Cloud. Create or select a Cloud project, then enable the API for that project. The project is the unit used for the documented quotas.
- Create a service account. Generate credentials for an application that will send notifications. Protect the private key and restrict its use to the required environment.
- Obtain an access token. Authenticate the service account with OAuth and request a token with permission to call the Indexing API. Tokens expire, so production integrations must handle renewal.
- Verify site ownership. Add and verify the relevant property in Google Search Console. The account or service identity used for notifications must have the necessary access to the property.
- Publish the notification. Send a JSON POST request to https://indexing.googleapis.com/v3/urlNotifications:publish. The request identifies one URL and one notification type.
- Record the response. Log the HTTP status, response body, URL, notification type, and timestamp. A 200 should be treated as accepted for processing, not as an indexing result.
- Check the page independently. Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool and inspect server logs, robots rules, canonical tags, and rendered HTML. The API cannot correct an indexability problem.
Request shape
A minimal request contains the URL and notification type. In an implementation, replace the template values in the code with the actual eligible URL and token:

}'For a removal notification, keep the same endpoint and change the type to URL_DELETED. The URL in the request must be the exact fully qualified address whose state changed.
Batching, quotas, and cost
Google documents batches of up to 100 requests. Batching reduces the number of HTTP connections, but it does not make 100 URLs count as one request for quota purposes. Quota is counted per URL.

Google states that Indexing API use is free. A higher quota requires an approval request, and approval is intended for pages using the supported markup. Quotas and eligibility language can change, so check the current Google documentation before designing a high-volume integration.
What to use for normal webpages
For articles, products, services, documentation, and other standard pages, rely on Google’s normal discovery and indexing systems instead of the Indexing API.

Use URL Inspection for a specific page
When one ordinary URL is missing or has just changed, open Search Console, choose the correct property, enter the full URL in URL Inspection, and run the live test. If the test finds the page indexable, submit an indexing request when the option is available. Google explicitly says that submitting a request does not guarantee that the page will appear in the index.
A live test can fail because the page is blocked by robots.txt, requires authentication, returns an error, has a conflicting canonical, or contains a directive such as noindex. Resolve that cause first; repeatedly submitting the same blocked URL does not override it.
Use an XML sitemap for many URLs
Maintain an XML sitemap containing canonical, indexable URLs and update the relevant timestamps when content changes. Submit the sitemap in Search Console and reference it in the site’s robots.txt file when appropriate. A sitemap improves discovery efficiency for large sites, but it is still a hint rather than an order to index every listed page.

How removals work
A URL_DELETED notification must match a real change on the server. Before sending it, take one of these actions:
- Remove the page so the URL returns HTTP 404 (Not Found) or 410 (Gone).
- Keep the page available but add a valid
noindexmeta directive.
The notification tells Google about the changed state; it does not replace the HTTP status or robots directive. If the URL still returns a normal indexable page, a deletion notification is contradictory and may not produce the result you expect. Redirect a retired URL only when the replacement is a genuine, relevant successor; a redirect is not the same as a deleted page.
Troubleshooting common failures
“The API accepted my blog post, but it is not indexed.”
Acceptance does not make an ineligible URL eligible. Remove the API integration for that page type and use crawlability checks, an XML sitemap, and URL Inspection instead.
The request returns an authorization or permission error
Check that the API is enabled in the intended Cloud project, the access token is valid, the service account has the required access, and Search Console ownership is verified for the exact property and URL variant.
The request is rejected for the page type
Confirm that the page genuinely contains valid JobPosting data or a BroadcastEvent nested in a VideoObject. A page about hiring, video, or events is not automatically eligible without the required structured data and matching content.
Requests are being throttled
Inspect daily and per-minute usage at the Cloud project level. Remember that each URL in a batch consumes quota. Add backoff for transient errors, deduplicate queued URLs, and do not create extra accounts to evade limits; Google identifies quota abuse as a reason access can be revoked.
The page was deleted but still appears in search
Verify that the URL consistently returns 404 or 410, or that the noindex directive is present in the rendered page. Then send the deletion notification and allow Google’s systems time to recrawl and refresh search results.
URL Inspection says the page is not indexable
Fix the reported technical cause before requesting indexing. Check robots.txt, response codes, redirects, canonical selection, noindex directives, server availability, and whether Googlebot can fetch the same content as a normal visitor.

- Does the page contain accurate, valid
JobPostingstructured data? - If it is a livestream, is
BroadcastEventembedded in aVideoObjectand does the page represent a real broadcast? - Is the URL publicly crawlable and indexable right now?
- Are Cloud API access, service-account authentication, and Search Console ownership configured?
- Are you staying within the project’s daily and per-minute quotas?
- For a removal, does the URL return 404/410 or carry
noindex? - For every other page type, have you provided internal links, a clean canonical, an XML sitemap, and a technically accessible page?
Bottom line
The Google Indexing API is specialized infrastructure for job listings and qualifying livestream pages, not a universal indexing button. Treat notifications as crawl or removal signals, verify the page with Search Console and server data, and use sitemaps and standard technical SEO practices for every ordinary webpage.
