Yes—syncing can copy a deletion to other devices or cloud locations connected to the same service. Whether it does depends on the app, the kind of sync or backup in use, and the devices or accounts involved. Sync is not a universal safety copy: check the specific service’s rules before deleting something you may want to keep.
Why can syncing delete something elsewhere?
Syncing keeps connected locations aligned. That can mean sharing additions and edits, but it can also mean sharing deletions. If a file is deleted from a synced library, the service may treat that as a change to apply everywhere that library is connected.

“Sync” and “backup” are not interchangeable guarantees. Mirroring or streaming files with a desktop app, backing up photos, and syncing a cloud drive can have different deletion behavior—even when one company offers all of them. The exact product and its settings matter.

| Service and content | What deletion can do | Recovery period |
|---|---|---|
| Google Drive for desktop: files mirrored or streamed between Drive and a computer | Putting a file in Trash puts it in Trash everywhere it is mirrored or streamed. | Google says files in Drive Trash are deleted forever after 30 days, or sooner if Trash is emptied. Google Drive Help |
| Google Photos: photos or videos with backup enabled | Deleting an item in Photos also removes it from devices with Google Photos installed and backup turned on. This rule is specific to Google Photos and does not establish how other photo apps behave. | Google says items remain in Photos Trash for 30 days before permanent deletion. Google Photos Help |
| Apple iCloud Drive: files with iCloud Drive enabled | Changes, including deletion, appear on devices using iCloud Drive. Apple says deleting a file on iCloud.com also deletes it from devices with iCloud Drive turned on. | Apple says deleted iCloud Drive files are recoverable for 30 days. Apple iCloud User Guide |
These are documented examples, not a rule for every cloud service, operating system, sync mode, or account configuration. Apple describes iCloud Drive changes appearing across connected devices in its iCloud Drive guide.

Does deleting from Google Photos remove copies in other Google services?
Not automatically from every Google service. Google says items deleted from Photos are not automatically removed from Blogger, Drive, Gmail, or YouTube. A photo’s presence in more than one service does not mean those services share the same deletion behavior. Google Photos Help
How to check before deleting a file or photo
- Identify the service and account. Confirm whether the item is in a synced cloud library, a desktop sync folder, or a separate local folder.
- Check the relevant setting on each device. Look for the service’s sync or backup status. For Google Drive for desktop, determine whether the files are mirrored or streamed; for Google Photos, check whether backup is enabled.
- Decide whether you want to delete everywhere or only on one device. Use the service’s documented remove-from-device or backup controls if you want to keep a cloud copy, and verify the result before changing backup settings again.
- Check Trash or Recently Deleted. If you deleted the wrong item, look in the service’s deleted-items area and follow its recovery steps before the retention period expires.
Turning sync off is not proof that every copy is safe, retained, or deleted. Confirm the location of the copy you intend to keep and the result in the relevant service.

Can you recover something deleted by syncing?
Possibly, if the service still has it in Trash or another recovery area. Google’s cited guidance gives a 30-day period for Drive Trash and Google Photos Trash; Apple says iCloud Drive files can be recovered for 30 days. These periods apply to the named services, not to syncing in general. Emptying Trash or permanently deleting an item can end the available recovery option sooner.

If the item is missing, check the correct account and service first, then inspect its Trash or Recently Deleted area. Do not assume that a recovery window exists after permanent deletion; the cited guidance does not promise recovery in that case.
