TV Picture Doesn’t Fit After an Update? Check These Settings First

A TV picture that changes after an update may need a picture-size adjustment. Check the aspect ratio, compare inputs, and use instructions for your exact model.

If your TV picture is suddenly cropped, stretched, or zoomed after a software update, check the TV’s picture-size or aspect-ratio setting first. Samsung says video and audio settings might reset to defaults after an update. That makes a settings change a sensible first check, but it does not prove the update caused every picture-fit problem—or that the TV is damaged.

Identify what changed on screen

The right adjustment depends on the symptom. Note whether the image is cut off at the edges, stretched out of shape, zoomed in, surrounded by black bars, or simply smaller than it was before. These effects have different causes, and filling every inch of the screen is not always the correct goal.

  • Edges are cut off: Look for a full-image or no-crop option such as Fit to Screen, if your model offers one.
  • People or objects look too wide or tall: Check the aspect ratio and choose a normal or original-ratio setting rather than stretching the image.
  • The picture is zoomed: Check for a Zoom mode and return to a standard or original view.
  • Black bars appear: They may match the shape of the program or film. Don’t stretch 4:3 or cinematic content just to fill a widescreen panel.
  • The picture is smaller than expected: Check the TV’s size and ratio controls, then compare another app, channel, or input.

Samsung says its Fit to Screen option, when available, displays the full image without cutting off part of it. Its availability and the labels on screen depend on the TV.

Check the TV’s picture-size or aspect-ratio control

Look in the picture settings for a label such as Picture Size, Aspect Ratio, Screen, Wide Mode, Fit to Screen, or Just Scan. Try the manufacturer’s standard or original-ratio option first. If the edges are cropped, choose a full-image or full-pixel option if your model provides one. Avoid using Zoom as a general fix because it can crop the picture further.

Menu names and routes vary by model, year, input, and software generation. These manufacturer examples are not universal:

  • Samsung: The documented route is Settings (All Settings) > Picture > Expert Settings > Picture Size Settings. Options described include 16:9 Standard, Custom, 4:3, and Fit to Screen; not every option is available on every TV. See Samsung’s picture-settings guide.
  • LG: LG recommends checking Aspect Ratio and suggests 16:9 or Original Ratio, depending on the picture. Its webOS 22 example route is Settings > All Settings > Picture > Aspect Ratio > User Selection; older webOS versions use different paths. See LG’s model- and webOS-dependent instructions.
  • Sony: Sony’s cited guide places Wide mode under Settings > BRAVIA Settings > Screen. Options and behavior depend on the model and signal. See Sony’s Wide mode guide.

If the menu labels don’t match, use the instructions for your exact model rather than assuming another model’s route applies.

Find out whether the TV or one source is responsible

A picture-fit change may come from the connected device or the signal, not from the TV’s general settings. Sony notes that Auto Wide behavior can vary with the input or signal, picture size can depend on the content, and some set-top boxes control picture size.

  1. Open a built-in TV app or tune to a broadcast channel, if available, and compare its picture with the affected input.
  2. Try another input or connected device. Note whether the same cropping, stretching, or zoom appears.
  3. If only one device is affected, check that device’s output resolution, scaling, and aspect-ratio settings. Also check whether the device itself has a picture-size control.

If the problem appears only on one input, focus on that input and its connected source before changing settings for the whole TV.

What an update does—and doesn’t—tell you

Samsung’s US software-update guidance says video and audio settings might be automatically reset to defaults after an update. This supports checking whether picture settings changed, but Samsung does not quantify how often it happens, and that guidance does not establish that all TV brands reset picture settings after updates. A picture-fit symptom by itself also does not show that the update damaged the panel or that a firmware defect is present. See Samsung’s software-update guidance.

The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a statistic for how often picture-fit problems follow software updates. Treat the timing as a clue to investigate, not proof of the cause.

If the picture still doesn’t fit

  1. Confirm the picture-size or aspect-ratio setting for the affected input.
  2. Compare the built-in apps or a broadcast channel with external devices to isolate the source.
  3. Use the exact model’s support instructions if the available labels or menu path differ from the examples above.
  4. If the problem continues across sources after these checks, contact the TV manufacturer or seek service. Sony’s picture and screen troubleshooting guide recommends checking settings and sources, then seeking service if troubleshooting does not resolve the issue.
