Does Starlink Work During Power or Internet Outages?

Starlink may stay online when another ISP fails, but it needs electricity. Learn what backup power can do and how to tell a Starlink service outage from a power problem.

Starlink can keep working when a different internet provider goes down, provided your Starlink equipment has power, your service is active, and Starlink itself is operating in your area. If household electricity fails, an unbacked Starlink setup stops: the dish, router, and power supply need electricity. A compatible UPS, battery, or generator may keep it running, but there is no universal runtime for every Starlink kit.

Can Starlink work when your regular internet is down?

Potentially, yes. A fault at a cable, fiber, or other local internet provider does not by itself mean Starlink is offline. Starlink uses its own service and equipment, so it can be an alternative if its service is available at your location and your kit remains powered and operational. That is conditional, not a guarantee: Starlink can also have a service outage, or your own installation can be affected by power, cables, obstructions, weather, or account status.

Starlink’s app distinguishes a SERVICE OUTAGE from a power disconnect. A service-outage alert means Starlink service is affected; an outage at another provider is not the same event. See Starlink’s app alert explanations.

Will Starlink work if the power goes out?

Not without a source of electricity. Starlink’s service summary identifies the dish, Wi-Fi router, and power supply as parts of the service setup and lists reliability of grid power or problems with a customer’s electrical power as factors that can affect performance. If the equipment loses power, it cannot provide internet. Starlink’s Critical Information Summary describes this dependency.

With a UPS, battery, or generator

Backup power can potentially keep a Starlink installation running during a grid outage. Check the exact kit’s power requirements and the backup source’s output, and ensure the dish and router or power supply are covered. How long it will run depends on the equipment and available capacity; the cited Starlink material does not establish a model-independent runtime. Do not assume a battery, UPS, or power connection made for one model works with another.

A model-specific battery connection

Starlink documents a battery-backup connection for its Performance Advanced Power Supply. The guide says that this power supply can use AC or DC inputs, or connect both sources while a battery backup is connected to the DC input. This applies to that named Performance accessory; it is not a general connection instruction for all Starlink kits. Consult the Starlink Performance Accessories guide and the instructions for your own equipment.

What to check when Starlink is offline

  1. Check the power source and connections. Confirm household power is available and that the Starlink power supply and router are receiving it. The app’s power-disconnect alert advises checking the power source and cable connections.
  2. Read the Starlink app alerts. Separate a service outage from a power disconnect or another device event. The Event Log includes router-related outages as well as terminal connectivity events.
  3. Check account status, equipment, and cables. Starlink’s offline troubleshooting guidance recommends checking service or account status and inspecting equipment and connections.
  4. Review obstructions and weather. Use the app’s obstruction view and consider local conditions. Obstructions can cause interruptions, and weather or temporary network issues may also affect connectivity. Starlink’s troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
  5. Use instructions for your specific kit. Avoid substituting an unverified power supply or assuming that a third-party router arrangement follows the same troubleshooting steps.
