A current app on a phone is not enough by itself: Bluetooth transmission is compressed, while a wired output or a supported Spotify Connect device on Wi‑Fi can preserve the lossless path.
Spotify’s lossless files reach up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection, and says recording quality, network stability, device compatibility, and connection type all affect what you actually hear. Lossless availability has expanded to more than 50 markets as of October 6, 2025, but rollout and device certification remain regional and model-specific.

What “Spotify Lossless” actually requires
Lossless is a Spotify Premium feature. The account, app, playback device, and connection all have to line up:
- Premium account: Free accounts do not provide the Lossless quality option.
- Supported software: Spotify lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop app version 1.2.67 or later as supported baselines.
- Lossless enabled: The setting is separate from simply installing the latest app.
- Capable output path: The final wired or network connection must avoid an incompatible conversion.
- Suitable network: A stable 1.5–2 Mbps connection is Spotify’s recommendation for lossless streaming.
Lossless describes the audio stream Spotify sends. It does not certify every component between the app and your ears. Your phone or computer may receive and decode the stream correctly, yet a wireless link, an adapter, a speaker, or a receiver can change it before playback.

Does Spotify Lossless work on every phone?
No. A phone must run a supported Spotify app and have Lossless available for its account and market, but Spotify does not promise identical support for every handset. Android and iPhone models can differ in operating-system support, USB audio behavior, digital-to-analog hardware, and manufacturer firmware.
What the phone can do
A supported mobile app can decode Spotify’s lossless stream. You can then send audio to the phone’s built-in speaker, a wired headset through a headphone jack, a USB-C or Lightning audio adapter, or a network player. The app’s ability to decode the stream is only the first link in that chain.
Why the phone model still matters
Many current phones omit a 3.5 mm jack, so wired listening may require a digital adapter or USB DAC. The adapter must accept the audio format and avoid forcing a lower-quality conversion. Some USB accessories draw more power than a phone can supply, and some phones restrict USB audio until the accessory is reconnected or the USB setting is changed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe built-in loudspeaker is also a practical limit. Even when the app receives Lossless, a tiny phone speaker has restricted frequency response and dynamic range. That does not make the stream lossy, but it means the hardware cannot reveal all the detail available in the file.

How to check a phone
- Update Spotify from your phone’s app store until it is at least version 9.0.58.
- Open Spotify and go to Settings and privacy → Media quality.
- Choose Lossless for Wi‑Fi, cellular streaming, and downloads as appropriate. Each network type can have its own setting.
- Play a track and check the selected output in the device picker. If you use a USB adapter or wired headset, connect it before playback.
- If Lossless is missing, verify that the account is Premium, the feature is available in your market, and the app is signed into the intended account.
Can you hear Spotify Lossless on a computer?
Yes, a supported desktop app can decode the stream, but a computer does not automatically deliver lossless audio to every speaker or headset. Spotify lists desktop app version 1.2.67 or later as the supported baseline.
Wired computer listening
A wired headphone jack, USB audio interface, or external DAC is the most straightforward computer route. Set Lossless in Settings and privacy → Media quality, select the wired output in the operating system, and avoid applications or system enhancements that resample the signal. A conventional analog headphone output still depends on the computer’s internal DAC and amplifier; an external USB DAC can provide a cleaner, more predictable path when it is compatible with the computer.
Computer speakers and docks
USB speakers and monitors with built-in audio can receive digital audio, but their firmware and internal processing determine what happens next. A computer’s HDMI or DisplayPort audio can also be sent to a television or receiver that resamples or compresses it. Treat the computer as a source, not as proof that the complete chain is lossless.

- Install or update Spotify to version 1.2.67 or newer.
- In Spotify, open Settings and privacy → Media quality and select Lossless for the connection you are using.
- Choose the wired DAC, interface, or headphones as the computer’s active output.
- For a network player, use Spotify’s device picker instead of routing audio through the computer’s Bluetooth menu.
- Confirm that the external device is on current firmware and is listed as a supported Spotify Connect model if you expect network lossless playback.
Do Bluetooth speakers and headphones support Spotify Lossless?
They can play Spotify, but Bluetooth does not preserve Spotify’s lossless stream. Spotify states: “Currently, Bluetooth doesn’t provide enough bandwidth to transmit lossless audio, so the signal has to be compressed before being sent.” The phone or computer may decode Lossless first, but the Bluetooth link then applies a codec before the speaker or headphones receive it.

This applies to Bluetooth speakers, headphones, earbuds, car systems, and Bluetooth adapters. A product advertised with a high-resolution Bluetooth codec does not change Spotify’s stated limitation for its Lossless service. Bluetooth remains convenient and often sounds excellent, but it is not the connection to choose when preserving the lossless transmission is the priority.
What happens when Bluetooth is selected
- The Spotify app requests the Lossless stream when the setting and track allow it.
- The phone or computer decodes that stream.
- The operating system sends audio to the Bluetooth stack.
- A Bluetooth codec compresses the signal for wireless transmission.
- The speaker or headphones decode that codec and play the result.
Changing Spotify’s quality setting to Lossless can still improve the source sent into that chain, but it cannot remove the Bluetooth codec step. If battery life, mobility, or multi-device convenience matters more than bit-perfect delivery, Bluetooth is a sensible choice; it simply should not be described as lossless at the listener.
When wired headphones are the right choice
Use wired headphones or speakers when you want the simplest path with the fewest compatibility variables. A direct analog connection from a phone or computer, or a USB connection to a compatible DAC, avoids the Bluetooth transmission stage.

- Use a genuine digital audio adapter for phones without a headphone jack.
- Check whether the adapter supports the phone’s connector and operating system.
- If playback stops when the screen sleeps, test another adapter or disable a battery-optimization rule affecting USB audio.
- Keep volume normalization and equalization choices in mind: they change the signal even though they are not Bluetooth compression.
Computer considerations
- Use the operating system’s selected wired output rather than a paired Bluetooth device.
- Check exclusive-mode or sample-rate settings only if you understand how your audio software handles them; forcing an unsupported rate can cause silence or resampling.
- Powered speakers and headphone amplifiers need their own power, so verify that the device is switched on and selected.
What speakers work with Spotify Connect Lossless?
Spotify Connect sends playback control and audio over the local network to a compatible device. Spotify says Lossless works on many Spotify Connect devices, including supported models from manufacturers such as Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser. That statement is not blanket approval for every product from those manufacturers. Exact model certification, firmware, account rollout, and regional availability determine whether Lossless appears.

How Connect differs from Bluetooth
With Connect, the speaker or network player receives the stream through Wi‑Fi or Ethernet rather than through a short-range Bluetooth audio link. A verified device can therefore maintain the lossless path, while your phone acts mainly as a controller. The phone does not need to remain within Bluetooth range, and another household member can often control playback from an approved account on the same network.
Connect setup
- Put the speaker or network player and your phone or computer on the same local network.
- Update the player’s firmware and install its manufacturer app if setup requires one.
- Start Spotify and tap or click the Connect/device icon.
- Select the exact player model, not a similarly named room or Bluetooth entry.
- While connected, open the device’s quality setting and choose Lossless if the option is offered. Third-party devices can have a separate quality control from the phone’s general setting.
- Play a track and leave the player connected to Wi‑Fi or Ethernet for the session.
A device directory listing or a manufacturer’s general “Spotify Connect” support does not by itself establish Lossless support. Look for the exact model and current firmware. If the Lossless option does not appear after updating, the model may support Connect but not the Lossless tier, or its rollout may not yet be active in your account or region.
Connection comparison
| Playback path | Can receive Spotify Lossless? | What can prevent lossless delivery | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth speaker or headphones | No lossless transmission | Bluetooth codec compresses the signal | Portable, convenient listening |
| Wired headphones or speakers | Usually, when the app and adapter/DAC support the format | Unsupported adapter, system resampling, or downstream processing | Direct personal listening |
| Spotify Connect over Wi‑Fi or Ethernet | Yes on supported, certified models | Model certification, firmware, regional rollout, or device quality setting | Standalone speakers and multi-room playback |
| Phone or computer built-in speaker | App can decode it, but the speaker cannot reproduce all available detail | Small driver limits and system processing | Casual listening without extra hardware |
Network, track, and account limits
Bandwidth and stability
Spotify recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for Lossless. A connection that briefly falls below that level can cause buffering, a quality change, or playback interruption. Cellular congestion, weak Wi‑Fi, and a busy home network are common causes. Downloading tracks with Lossless selected can help when the network is unreliable, but downloads still require storage and the setting must be enabled before downloading.
Source recording quality
Lossless delivery cannot restore information that was absent from the original recording. Older masters, heavily processed recordings, or tracks supplied in a lower-quality source may not sound more detailed simply because the transport is lossless.
Best Value
- INCREDIBLE SOUND: Custom acoustic platform delivers rich, balanced audio for music, calls and everyday listening.
- LOSSLESS AUDIO SUPPORT: USB-C lossless audio and sound profiles optimize music quality across devices and environments. Additional option to use the 3.5 mm cable for a standard analog experience.

Track and market availability
Lossless launched in more than 50 markets by October 6, 2025, but availability is not universal. A Premium account in an unsupported country, a track not yet offered in Lossless, or an account still awaiting rollout can leave the option unavailable. Spotify’s current support information should be treated as the authority for your market and account status.
Troubleshooting when Lossless is missing
- Confirm Premium: Check the plan shown on the account you are using.
- Update software: Use mobile app 9.0.58+ or desktop app 1.2.67+.
- Recheck the setting: Go to Settings and privacy → Media quality and set Lossless separately for Wi‑Fi, cellular, and downloads.
- Inspect the output: Disconnect Bluetooth and test a wired output, or choose the exact Connect player from Spotify’s device picker.
- Update firmware: Install the latest firmware on a Connect speaker, receiver, DAC, or USB adapter.
- Test the network: Move closer to the router, pause large downloads, or try a wired Ethernet connection for the player.
- Try another track: The specific recording may not have a Lossless version.
- Restart the chain: Sign out and back in, restart Spotify and the playback device, then reconnect the player.
If the option appears on the phone but disappears when a third-party player is selected, that behavior points to device-specific support or firmware rather than a problem with the phone’s decoder. If playback works on wired headphones but not on a Connect speaker, verify that the selected model—not merely the manufacturer—supports Lossless.
The practical answer for each listening scenario
- One phone and wired headphones: Supported Premium app plus Lossless enabled is the most direct portable setup.
- One phone and Bluetooth earbuds: Spotify plays normally, but the wireless link is compressed; choose this for convenience rather than lossless transmission.
- Computer and wired DAC: Update the desktop app, select the DAC, and avoid an unintended Bluetooth or display-audio route.
- Living-room or multi-room speaker: Use a verified Spotify Connect model, current firmware, and its in-device Lossless setting.
- Uncertain hardware: Check the exact model’s Spotify support information before assuming that a “Connect” badge includes Lossless.
The Bottom Line
Spotify Lossless does not work losslessly on every phone, computer, or Bluetooth speaker. Supported Premium apps can decode it, but Bluetooth always compresses the signal. For lossless transmission, use a compatible wired path or a certified Spotify Connect device on a stable network, and verify the exact model, firmware, app version, account, and regional availability.
