Yes. Every PS4 has an HDMI OUT port for digital video and audio. Some models also have a separate DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port, which carries digital audio only. Because optical output depends on the exact console model, check its CUH number before buying an optical cable.
What “digital output” means on a PS4
The phrase can refer to two different connections. HDMI is the PS4’s standard digital connection for both picture and sound. Optical is a separate digital audio connection found on some models; it does not carry video.

Which PS4 models have optical output?
Optical availability is model-dependent. Sony’s diagrams show a DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) terminal on CUH-1200 and PS4 Pro models, but not on the CUH-2000, CUH-2100, or CUH-2200 families. Sony also explicitly confirms that the CUH-2000 series has no optical output.

Check the CUH model number printed on the console rather than relying on its appearance or the “Slim” name. If your console lacks the optical port, an optical cable cannot connect directly to it.

How to connect PS4 video and audio
Connect to a TV or HDMI display
- Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the PS4’s rear HDMI OUT port.
- Plug the other end into an HDMI input on the TV or display.
- Select that HDMI input on the display.
Connect optical audio on a model with the port
- Confirm that the console has a DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL) port and that the receiving device has an optical input.
- Connect the optical cable between those ports.
- On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port, then select DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL).
Choose audio settings that the receiving equipment supports. Sony warns that selecting an output the connected speakers cannot support may damage them. For setup details, see Sony’s PS4 support guide.

What to do if your receiver has no matching input
The PS4 has HDMI but the receiver has optical
If your PS4 has no optical port, use an HDMI-based AV setup or connect the PS4 to the display by HDMI and use an audio connection supported by your equipment. A direct optical connection from the console is possible only when the console itself has DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL).

You are considering RCA or another analog cable
A simple analog RCA cable is not a native PS4 output solution. Sony states in its North American PS4 FAQ that the console does not support analog audio or video output; it transmits video and audio over HDMI. See PlayStation’s FAQ and setup information.

You get no picture or sound through HDMI
Check that the display is set to the HDMI input connected to the PS4 and that the cable is seated at both ends. Sony also notes that a PS4 cannot output video and audio when an HDMI-connected device is not HDCP-compatible. Consult the device documentation or Sony’s PS4 support page if the issue continues.

Sony’s North American FAQ says PS4 can output 5.1 through DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL), while its European FAQ says that port can output 5.1 or 7.1. Because Sony’s regional support pages differ, treat the supported channel count as region-specific rather than assuming one universal figure. The receiver and selected audio format must also support the output.
