JPEG also has a specified recovery method for some errors. Whether an image can be decoded—and how much of it survives—depends on where the damage occurs and how the decoder handles it.
How PNG detects damage
A PNG file begins with an eight-byte signature and is made up of chunks. Each chunk has a CRC—a value calculated from the chunk type and data—that a decoder can check for corruption. The W3C PNG Third Edition specification says: “PNG decoders should detect errors as early as possible, recover from errors whenever possible, and fail gracefully otherwise.”

That guidance does not promise that a damaged file can be repaired or displayed. The effect depends partly on which chunk is affected. A decoder can ignore an unknown ancillary chunk, but an unknown critical chunk must be reported to the user by a decoder trying to extract the image. Damage to the signature, essential structure, or image data can prevent decoding, depending on the error and the decoder.
How JPEG can recover from some errors
JPEG is not designed to silently accept every damaged file, but the JPEG standard does describe recovery in applicable cases. Under ITU-T T.81, restart markers can help a decoder regain synchronization after an error. It may then fill missing lines and continue decoding. This is conditional recovery, not a guarantee that a complete or clean image will result.

The standard also spells out limits: some errors cannot be recovered, and header errors are likely to be catastrophic. Even when decoding resumes, the output around the affected restart interval may be highly corrupted. ITU-T lists T.81 (09/1992) as in force and identifies it as identical to ISO/IEC 10918-1:1994; see the ITU-T recommendation status page.
What happens with different kinds of damage?
| Damage or error | PNG | JPEG |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown nonessential data | An unknown ancillary chunk can be ignored by a decoder. | The cited JPEG recovery guidance concerns restart markers; it does not establish an equivalent general rule for unknown data. |
| Corruption in image data | Chunk CRCs can reveal corruption, but detection does not ensure that the image can be recovered. | In applicable cases, restart markers can let a decoder resynchronize and continue; the affected area may remain badly corrupted. |
| Damage to critical structure or headers | Errors affecting the signature or critical structure can prevent decoding. | Header errors are likely catastrophic, according to T.81. |
The table describes what the standards specify, not a prediction for every image viewer, browser, or repair utility. Decoder implementations can differ, and neither standard supplies a universal success rate for damaged files.

Which format is more likely to open when damaged?
There is no standards-based winner. PNG explicitly includes CRC checks for detecting corruption and permits some nonessential chunks to be skipped. JPEG specifies a way to recover synchronization at restart markers. Both approaches are conditional: some errors can be handled, while others can stop decoding or leave visibly damaged output.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. PNG may detect damage and fail; JPEG may recover from some damage and fail on other errors. The location and type of corrupted bytes, along with the decoder, determine the result.
