BitLocker encrypts a Windows drive so someone who removes it or accesses it outside the running system cannot simply read its files. To avoid locking yourself out, know where your recovery key is saved and verify that you can access it before changing encryption settings. Windows 10’s standard support ended October 14, 2025, though the PC can still work.
What is BitLocker?
BitLocker is drive encryption: it makes the contents of a drive unreadable to someone trying to access the disk outside the running Windows system. It is intended to protect data if a device is lost, stolen, or its drive is accessed separately. Encryption does not replace keeping a recovery key somewhere you can reach.

Windows has two related experiences. Device Encryption is designed to be simple and is commonly enabled automatically on eligible devices. BitLocker Drive Encryption offers manual configuration for more advanced scenarios. Availability and controls depend on the PC and Windows edition, so do not assume every Windows 10 computer has the same options. Check your own settings to see what is available and whether encryption is on. Microsoft’s BitLocker overview explains the two experiences.
Where is my BitLocker recovery key saved?
The recovery key is a 48-digit number that can unlock an encrypted drive if Windows cannot unlock it automatically. Depending on how encryption was activated, a copy may be saved to a Microsoft account, a work or school account, a USB flash drive, or a printout. The available backup options can vary.

Before enabling encryption or making changes that could trigger a recovery prompt, locate the backup and confirm you can read it. If you keep a copy on a USB flash drive, protect the drive and check that its saved recovery-key file is readable; the USB is an optional backup location, not a requirement for BitLocker.
How do I find my BitLocker recovery key?
- Check the Microsoft account associated with the PC. Use Microsoft’s recovery-key lookup instructions to find keys saved to a personal Microsoft account.
- Check the work or school account or contact IT. If your PC is managed by an organization, its recovery key may be held by your organization. Contact its IT team if you cannot access it.
- Look for a saved copy. Check any USB drive or printout you used when backing up the key. Microsoft’s recovery-key backup instructions describe available save options.
- Match the key to the locked drive. If Windows displays a recovery-key ID, use its first eight digits to identify the matching key when you have more than one.
Microsoft Support states: “Microsoft Support doesn’t have the ability to retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.” If you cannot find the key and cannot undo the change that triggered recovery, Microsoft warns that resetting the device removes all files. See Microsoft’s instructions for finding a recovery key.

Why is Windows asking for a BitLocker recovery key?
A recovery prompt does not by itself prove that someone attacked the PC. Windows may ask for the key when a hardware, firmware, or software change resembles an attempt to access the drive without authorization. If the PC is managed by work or school, contact IT before resetting it or trying changes that could affect access.

When the prompt appears, note the displayed recovery-key ID and find the corresponding saved key. If you recently changed hardware or firmware, consider whether you can undo that change; Microsoft says a reset removes all files when the key is unavailable and the triggering change cannot be undone.

What should I know about Windows 10 support?
Microsoft says standard Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. After that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided under the general support policy; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. A Windows 10 PC can still operate, but this general statement does not establish the servicing terms for every specialized edition. See Microsoft’s Windows 10 support notice.
