Yes—but only when the device’s DNS queries actually reach Pi-hole. A phone connected to your home Wi-Fi can be filtered through the router’s DHCP settings, Pi-hole’s DHCP server, or a manual DNS setting. A phone using cellular data or public Wi-Fi is outside that LAN, so it needs a VPN tunnel—such as WireGuard—that sends its DNS traffic back to Pi-hole. Guest Wi-Fi and separate VLANs work when their DHCP, routing, and firewall rules allow clients to reach Pi-hole on DNS port 53.
Pi-hole is a DNS filter, not a universal traffic filter. It can block domains for phones, computers, smart TVs, and other clients that use it, but it cannot filter traffic that bypasses Pi-hole through another DNS service, private encrypted DNS, a VPN, or an application-specific resolver.

What it means for Pi-hole to “work” on a phone
Pi-hole makes its blocking decisions when a client asks a DNS resolver to translate a domain name into an IP address. If the phone asks Pi-hole, blocked domains can be refused or redirected according to your lists. If the phone asks the router, a mobile carrier, a VPN provider, a private-DNS service, or an app’s own resolver instead, Pi-hole never sees the request.

Phones connected to your home Wi-Fi
Router DHCP is the normal whole-network method
The simplest arrangement is to give Pi-hole a fixed address on your local network and configure the router’s DHCP/DNS settings to advertise that address to clients. When the phone joins Wi-Fi and renews its lease, it receives Pi-hole as its DNS server. Pi-hole’s post-install guidance describes this approach as the way to make all devices on the network use Pi-hole without configuring each device separately.
Use only the Pi-hole address for the DNS server advertised by DHCP if you want router-level blocking. Advertising a second resolver gives clients a straightforward fallback that can bypass Pi-hole. Some routers label these fields “Primary DNS” and “Secondary DNS”; leaving a public resolver in the second field can defeat the policy even when Pi-hole is listed first.
Pi-hole can provide DHCP instead
If your router cannot advertise a custom DNS server, you can disable the router’s DHCP service and enable Pi-hole’s DHCP server. Pi-hole then supplies addresses, gateway information, and its own DNS address to clients. Do not run two DHCP servers on the same LAN: competing leases can produce inconsistent DNS settings and intermittent results.

The exact labels vary by Android and iOS release, but the setting is normally inside the saved Wi-Fi network’s advanced or DNS options. This is a per-network setting; it does not automatically apply to cellular data or other Wi-Fi networks.

Cellular data and public Wi-Fi
When a phone switches to 4G, 5G, hotel Wi-Fi, café Wi-Fi, or another network, it is no longer a client of your home LAN. Your home router’s DHCP setting cannot follow it. To keep using Pi-hole, establish a VPN connection from the phone to your home network and configure the VPN to use Pi-hole for DNS.
Pi-hole’s own overview gives WireGuard as the documented example for keeping a phone or laptop protected on mobile data and public Wi-Fi. Other VPN technologies can work too, but the essential requirement is the same: the profile must make Pi-hole reachable and must explicitly assign Pi-hole as the DNS resolver.
Split-tunnel VPN: DNS protection without moving all traffic
A split-tunnel profile sends DNS requests—and any selected home-network routes—through the encrypted tunnel while ordinary internet traffic exits through the network the phone is currently using. This usually reduces load on the home connection and preserves local access speed. It still requires the VPN configuration to route DNS to Pi-hole and the home firewall to permit the VPN peer to reach it.
Full-tunnel VPN: route all phone traffic through home
A full-tunnel profile sends the phone’s entire internet connection through the WireGuard server and then through the home connection. This can make websites see the home connection’s public location while you travel, but it increases latency and uses your home upload bandwidth. The amount of extra delay and bandwidth depends on both connections; the official Pi-hole material does not publish a universal figure.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
Full-tunnel routing needs more than a working VPN handshake. The WireGuard guide warns that clients can appear to lose internet access if IP forwarding and NAT have not been prepared on the server or router. Local connections may continue to work while internet traffic fails. Enable forwarding, configure NAT for the VPN subnet, and ensure return traffic is allowed before testing a full tunnel.

- Install or import the WireGuard profile on the phone.
- Set the profile’s DNS field to the reachable Pi-hole address, using the VPN address or an address that the tunnel can route.
- For split tunneling, include the Pi-hole address and any required home subnets in the allowed routes, while leaving general internet traffic outside the tunnel.
- For full tunneling, route the desired internet prefixes through the VPN and confirm that forwarding and NAT are enabled at home.
- Activate the tunnel on cellular data and check Pi-hole’s query log for the phone’s VPN client address.
Guest Wi-Fi and separate VLANs
Guest Wi-Fi is a network-topology problem rather than a switch inside Pi-hole. A guest client can be filtered only if the guest subnet’s DHCP service advertises Pi-hole and the network allows DNS traffic from that subnet to the Pi-hole host.
Three conditions must be true
- DHCP: The guest scope must hand out the Pi-hole address as its DNS server. A main-LAN DHCP setting does not automatically affect the guest SSID.
- Routing: The guest subnet needs a route to the Pi-hole address. If Pi-hole is on another VLAN, the router must perform the inter-VLAN routing.
- Firewall policy: Permit guest clients to reach Pi-hole on DNS port 53 over UDP and TCP as needed. Keep other access blocked if isolation is part of your guest-network design.
Many consumer routers intentionally prevent guest devices from reaching the main LAN. That isolation can also block Pi-hole. You may need a firewall exception for DNS to the Pi-hole host while continuing to deny access to other local devices. If the router does not support that exception, you may need to place Pi-hole in a reachable segment or use a separate resolver for guests.
VLAN example
Suppose your main LAN is one subnet, the guest SSID is a second subnet, and Pi-hole has a static address on the main LAN. Configure the guest DHCP scope to advertise that address, add a route between the VLANs, and create a narrow firewall rule allowing guest-to-Pi-hole DNS. Do not broadly allow guest access to the main subnet; the DNS exception should be as specific as the router permits.
Coverage options compared
| Situation | How DNS reaches Pi-hole | Coverage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone on home Wi-Fi | Router DHCP, Pi-hole DHCP, or manual Wi-Fi DNS | That LAN or selected device | VPNs and private DNS can bypass it |
| Phone on cellular data | VPN profile with Pi-hole as DNS | Phone while the tunnel is active | Requires VPN maintenance and mobile battery/data use |
| Phone on public Wi-Fi | VPN tunnel back to home Pi-hole | Phone while the tunnel is active | Depends on captive portals, tunnel reachability, and home uptime |
| Guest Wi-Fi | Guest DHCP plus routing and firewall access to Pi-hole | Clients on that guest subnet | Guest isolation may block the resolver |
| Separate VLAN | VLAN DHCP and an explicit inter-VLAN DNS rule | Clients in the permitted VLANs | More routing and firewall administration |
| Full-tunnel VPN | All traffic and DNS traverse the home VPN gateway | Phone’s whole internet connection | Uses home upload capacity and adds latency; needs forwarding and NAT |
What Pi-hole can and cannot block
Pi-hole’s strength is network-level domain blocking. Because it operates at DNS level, it can cover browsers as well as mobile apps, smart TVs, and many IoT devices that cannot run a browser extension.

DNS filtering has hard limits. It cannot reliably remove an advertisement when the advertisement and wanted content come from the same domain, because denying the domain would also deny the content. It also cannot control connections that never use Pi-hole’s DNS path. A browser or app using its own encrypted resolver, a VPN that replaces DNS, or a hard-coded destination can evade the lists. No authoritative universal blocking percentage is established for phones, guest networks, cellular connections, or VPNs; results depend on the client and its DNS behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware and network requirements
Despite its name, Pi-hole is not restricted to a Raspberry Pi. The project’s prerequisites state that any hardware running a supported Linux distribution can host it. Suitable options can include an existing small computer, virtual machine, NAS, Docker host, or Raspberry Pi, provided the platform meets the project’s current support requirements.
The prerequisites specify at least 512 MB of RAM and 2 GB of free storage, with 4 GB recommended. Pi-hole also needs a static IP address; a DHCP reservation on the router satisfies that requirement while keeping the address stable. A Raspberry Pi 4 kit is an optional dedicated host for readers who do not already have suitable hardware, not a requirement for phone or VPN support.
The Pi-hole host must remain powered on and reachable. If it is offline, clients that have no alternate resolver may lose name resolution. That failure mode is often desirable for strict blocking, but it should be planned before changing DHCP settings across a household or guest network.

Setup plan for phone and remote coverage
- Assign a stable Pi-hole address. Use a static address on the host or a router DHCP reservation.
- Install Pi-hole on supported hardware. Confirm the host has the required memory and storage and is connected to the local network.
- Choose the LAN method. Advertise Pi-hole through router DHCP, run Pi-hole’s DHCP service after disabling the router’s DHCP, or configure selected devices manually.
- Test a home phone. Join the phone to home Wi-Fi, generate queries, and confirm the phone appears in Pi-hole’s query log.
- Deploy a VPN for remote use. Configure WireGuard or another VPN so the phone can reach Pi-hole and receives Pi-hole as its DNS server.
- Choose split or full tunnel. Use split tunneling for DNS and selected home routes; use full tunneling only after configuring IP forwarding and NAT.
- Test cellular and public Wi-Fi separately. Disable Wi-Fi, activate the VPN over cellular, and verify queries. Repeat on a different Wi-Fi network because captive portals and restrictive firewalls can affect VPN startup.
- Add guest or VLAN clients deliberately. Set their DHCP DNS value, permit DNS to Pi-hole, and verify that isolation rules do not block the exception.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The phone has Wi-Fi but no Pi-hole queries appear
Check the DHCP lease and the phone’s saved-network DNS setting. Remove any secondary resolver, disconnect the phone’s VPN, and review Private DNS or encrypted-DNS settings. Renew the Wi-Fi connection after changing DHCP values.

Some apps are blocked but others are not
Compare the app’s behavior with Pi-hole’s query log. The app may use an embedded resolver, DNS-over-HTTPS, or a VPN profile. A browser extension or app-level setting can also change the resolver independently of Wi-Fi DHCP.
The VPN connects but the phone cannot browse
First test whether the phone can reach Pi-hole through the tunnel. For a full tunnel, check IP forwarding, NAT, allowed routes, and return routes. If local resources work but internet sites do not, the missing forwarding or NAT configuration is the likely branch to investigate.
Guest clients receive an address but cannot resolve names
Inspect the guest DHCP scope, then test reachability to Pi-hole on port 53. A guest-isolation rule may be blocking the resolver. Add a narrow DNS exception or move the resolver to a segment the guest policy permits.
Remote filtering stops when the phone changes networks
Ensure the VPN is set to reconnect automatically and that its endpoint remains reachable from outside your home. Captive portals may require initial browser sign-in before the VPN can establish. Once connected, confirm the phone’s VPN address generates queries in Pi-hole rather than checking only the Wi-Fi or cellular status icon.
Privacy, security, and operational trade-offs
Keeping DNS at home gives you local query logging and per-client visibility, but those logs can reveal browsing habits. Set retention and access controls appropriate for the people using the network. A VPN encrypts DNS and, in a full-tunnel design, the phone’s traffic between the phone and home; it does not make the home server, the destination websites, or the VPN endpoint inherently anonymous.
Remote coverage also couples filtering to your home connection. A power outage, router failure, Pi-hole update, or VPN configuration error can affect every protected client. Decide whether clients should fail closed with no DNS or fail open through a backup resolver; the latter improves availability but creates an obvious bypass path.
