OBS Studio supports both Intel and Apple Silicon MacBook Pro models. You’ll need a compatible macOS version and the OBS download that matches your Mac’s processor; smooth streaming or recording depends on your settings and workload.
Which MacBook Pro models and macOS versions are supported?
OBS provides builds for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. The OBS homepage listed version 32.2.2 and macOS 13 or newer when checked on October 7, 2026. A separate macOS versions table, dated July 29, 2026, lists OBS 32.2.1 for Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 13 Ventura through macOS 26 Tahoe. Because the release number on the homepage is newer than the version in that table, check the official OBS download page for the current build and confirm your macOS version before updating.

OBS’s basic macOS requirements page lists macOS 11 or later, but that is not the minimum for the current release: the homepage lists macOS 13 or newer. The versions table also identifies older releases for older macOS versions as no longer supported. Use the current release where possible rather than treating the basic requirement as a guarantee of current-version compatibility.
How do you install OBS on a MacBook Pro?
- Open the official OBS download page and choose the Intel or Apple Silicon build that matches your Mac.
- Open the downloaded DMG file. If it does not mount automatically, find it in Downloads and open it manually.
- Drag OBS into the Applications folder, then launch it from Applications.
The OBS Mac installation guide also lists brew install --cask obs as a Homebrew installation option. Follow the current download page if its instructions differ from the older installation guide.

What permissions does OBS need on macOS?
In OBS, open the OBS Studio menu and choose Review App Permissions. Grant only the permissions needed for your sources and controls:
- Screen Recording: Captures the desktop, windows, and apps.
- Camera: Lets OBS access a webcam or camera connected through a capture device.
- Microphone: Lets OBS access a microphone and audio devices.
- Accessibility: Allows keyboard shortcuts to work while OBS is not the foremost app.
If a screen source is blank, check Screen Recording permission. If your camera or microphone is missing, check the corresponding permission. If global keyboard shortcuts do not work when you switch away from OBS, check Accessibility.

Which encoder should you use: Intel or Apple Silicon?
OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance distinguishes between Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. Apple Silicon can use Apple VideoToolbox for H.264 streaming and for H.264, HEVC, or Apple ProRes recording. Intel Macs can use VideoToolbox for H.264 recording, but OBS says VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported on Intel because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. For streaming from an Intel Mac, OBS directs users to x264.

Will OBS run smoothly on every MacBook Pro?
Compatibility does not establish how well a particular MacBook Pro will handle a particular stream or recording. CPU load varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS states on its System Requirements page: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The page lists an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU, and macOS 11 or later as basic macOS requirements; the current release’s macOS 13 minimum still applies if you want that release.

Use Tools → Auto Configuration Wizard to get a starting configuration, then test the actual scenes and output settings you plan to use. If performance is poor, try reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying scenes, or lowering encoder load. Run a test recording or private stream before relying on the setup for a live broadcast.

Do you need a microphone or capture device?
No extra hardware is required just to install and run OBS. A separate microphone may help if you need a dedicated voice input; a capture device is relevant when bringing an external camera or console into OBS. Choose equipment based on the input you need, its connection, and compatibility with your specific Mac and macOS version.

OBS’s device certification list says certified devices are tested with the latest OBS release. It lists the Shure MV7+ microphone and the ASUS TUF Gaming Capture Box CU4K30 and TUF Gaming Capture Box 4KPRO for macOS. Certification indicates OBS testing and compatibility; it does not establish price, availability, or sound or capture quality.
