AI Generated the App. How Do You Know It Actually Works?

A convincing demo and a green test suite are not proof. Verify an AI-generated app with requirements-based tests, independent failure cases, code and dependency review, risk-appropriate security checks, and human approval.

A generated app is not proven to work because it looks finished or its tests pass. Verify it against clear requirements, try independent normal and failure cases, inspect the code and dependencies, run security checks suited to its risks, and have a qualified human approve it before release.

What “works” should mean

Turn the app’s purpose into observable acceptance criteria before judging it. For each important user task, specify the input, expected result, and appropriate error behavior. Include requirements for privacy and security where they apply. NIST recommends multiple verification techniques, while noting that its guidance is a broadly applicable minimum—not a complete account of every way to verify software.

For example, do not stop at “the sign-in screen works.” Define what should happen with valid credentials, a wrong password, missing fields, repeated attempts, an expired session, and a user who should not have access. The exact cases depend on the app and its risks.

How to verify an AI-generated app

1. Run the project’s documented checks

Start with the project’s documented build and test commands. A successful run shows that those checks passed in that environment; it does not establish that the checks cover the requirements or that the app is secure. Review what is actually tested rather than treating a green result as a verdict.

2. Test expected behavior—and cases that should fail

Compare observed behavior with the acceptance criteria. Test ordinary user journeys as well as missing, invalid, malformed, unusually long, repeated, expired, and boundary-value inputs where relevant. Consider concurrent actions or overload behavior if the app needs to handle them.

Do not rely only on tests created alongside the implementation. Add independent negative and adversarial cases the AI may not have considered, and keep a regression test for each defect you fix. NIST describes black-box tests as a way to examine functional specifications, negative cases, boundaries, and input combinations. OWASP cautions that tests may encode incorrect behavior or be weakened; it recommends judging security confidence by adversarial testing and independent analysis, not merely by passing tests. NIST’s verification technique descriptions and the OWASP Secure Coding with AI guidance explain these complementary approaches.

3. Exercise the app in its intended environment

Follow realistic tasks from input to visible result, including failure paths. Check that errors fail safely rather than exposing sensitive information or leaving data in an unexpected state. For a web app, test the actual network-facing behavior, not only a local mock or isolated function. NIST recommends web application scanning when software may be connected to the internet; whether that applies depends on the app’s deployment and exposure.

4. Inspect every changed file

Review the generated diff, not just the screen that prompted the code. Pay particular attention to authentication and authorization, untrusted input, secrets, dependencies, database or access rules, and scripts that run during installation, build, testing, CI/CD, or deployment. OWASP warns that AI agents can alter scripts and pipeline configuration that execute in trusted contexts. A test that mocks away a real dependency may pass without exercising the behavior that matters.

5. Add security and dependency checks appropriate to the risk

NIST’s recommended techniques include threat modeling, static analysis, heuristic secret review, checking built-in protections, black-box and structural testing, regression tests, fuzzing, web application scanning when applicable, and checking included libraries, packages, and services. These methods cover different failure modes; choose the depth based on the app’s exposure and the sensitivity of its data. No individual scan proves correctness or security. See NIST IR 8397 and its descriptions of verification techniques.

6. Have a qualified human accept the change

A human reviewer should understand what changed, whether the evidence meets the requirements, and what risks remain. Give extra scrutiny to authentication, authorization, cryptography, validation, deserialization, build scripts, CI/CD, and deployment settings because mistakes in these areas can have wider consequences. OWASP’s AISVS Appendix C says AI-generated code should receive qualified human review and security validation. Its checklist is guidance for verification, not a statement that every app has met a legal obligation or certification.

What each verification method can—and cannot—tell you

Method Useful for What it does not establish by itself
Requirements-based and black-box tests Whether specified inputs produce expected results, including negative and boundary cases. That every important requirement or unexpected input has been covered.
Structural tests and code review Examining implementation paths and changes that behavior-only checks may miss. That the app behaves correctly in every runtime environment.
Static analysis and secret review Finding certain code patterns, potential flaws, and exposed secrets without relying only on runtime behavior. That no defect or secret exists; findings require interpretation and follow-up.
Fuzzing and web application scanning Exploring unexpected inputs or exposed web behavior, when suited to the app. That all attack paths or vulnerabilities have been found.
Dependency and service checks Reviewing libraries, packages, and services the app includes or relies on. That the app uses those components safely or that its own logic is correct.
Independent human review Assessing whether changes and test evidence make sense in context, with an accountable person making the release decision. A guarantee of defect-free or secure software.

NIST’s guidance supports combining techniques rather than treating any one as a universal solution. The right mix depends on the application; its title alone cannot determine a language-specific command, coverage target, or fixed checklist.

When a passing test suite is misleading

  • The tests only confirm the implementation’s assumptions. Compare them with separately written acceptance criteria and add cases the implementation’s author did not supply.
  • Assertions have been weakened or tests removed. Inspect test changes in the diff and confirm that failures still cause the suite to fail.
  • Mocks bypass important behavior. Identify which real dependencies and integration paths are exercised, then test those paths in an appropriate environment.
  • Only the happy path is covered. Add invalid, boundary, and failure cases that reflect actual use and security expectations.
  • Checks pass locally but not in the release environment. Exercise the app in its intended deployment conditions and verify the network-facing behavior where applicable.

A practical release decision

Before shipping, confirm that the important requirements have corresponding evidence, meaningful failure cases have been exercised, the diff and dependencies have been reviewed, suitable security checks have been run, and a qualified human accepts the remaining risk. NIST IR 8397, dated October 6, 2021, describes broadly applicable minimum verification techniques rather than a complete or mandatory recipe for every project. For AI-assisted changes, OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI and AISVS Appendix C reinforce independent testing and qualified human ownership. A passing suite is useful evidence, not the release decision itself.
