Short answer: NPCTalk’s documented GTA V example is a Windows Story Mode mod. It lets you speak to nearby non-player characters through a microphone, with an example featuring open mic, 19 characters, actions, and a developer mode. FiveM compatibility is not documented, and GTA Online must not be launched with a script hook installed. A heavily modded Story Mode installation may work, but only when its exact game build, hook and other components meet NPCTalk’s prerequisites; there is no universal compatibility guarantee.

What NPCTalk is designed to do
NPCTalk describes itself as a toolkit to make any NPC in any game talk back with Fish Audio, built first for GTA V. Its concrete GTA example is: “In GTA V story mode, let me talk to anyone near me with my mic.” That wording matters: the example targets the local Story Mode process, not Rockstar’s online service and not a FiveM server.

How to use the documented GTA V Story Mode setup
Prerequisites
The repository’s GTA V example lists a Windows computer, a GTA V installation, the .NET SDK 8 or newer, Git, Python 3.10 or newer, uv and ffmpeg. You also need a working microphone for the open-mic or push-to-talk interaction. A USB gaming microphone is a practical choice because it avoids relying on a laptop’s distant or noisy built-in mic, but no particular model is required or identified as tested.

Installation and first launch
- Prepare a clean Story Mode profile. Back up your game files and saves before adding a script hook or any other mod. Keep this profile separate from the installation you use to access GTA Online.
- Install the required runtimes. Confirm that Windows can find the .NET SDK 8+, Python 3.10+, Git,
uvandffmpeg. A missing executable usually appears as a command-not-found error when the project starts. - Obtain the NPCTalk project. Follow the repository’s current setup instructions rather than copying files from an unrelated GTA mod tutorial. The example’s hooks and launch assumptions are tied to the project version you install.
- Configure audio input. Select the intended microphone in Windows and in any NPCTalk configuration exposed by the example. Test recording levels before entering the game; a muted input can look like an NPC or hook failure.
- Start GTA V in Story Mode. Rockstar support describes Story Mode as generally playable without an internet connection and documents an offline launch argument for PC Story Mode. Use the supported offline route when you want to keep this modded profile away from online services.
- Enable the example’s interaction mode. The published demonstration includes open mic, 19 characters, actions and a developer mode. Start with the default or developer diagnostics, speak near one NPC, and verify that the game receives your voice before changing character or action settings.
- Close the modded session before switching profiles. Exit the game and remove or disable the script hook as directed by the project before launching any unmodded or online profile.
What success should look like
In the supported scenario, a nearby Story Mode NPC becomes the conversational target, your microphone supplies the speech input, and the example handles the character response and available actions. The repository’s 19-character demonstration shows the scope of the sample; it is not a promise that every GTA V pedestrian, mission character or third-party character pack is supported.
Why FiveM is a separate compatibility question
FiveM is not simply another launch button for the same Story Mode mod. Its official manual describes a customized single-player mode, requires a valid save from the original game, and places plugins in a FiveM application-data plugins folder. The installation guide also requires an installed and updated copy of GTAV, then installs the FiveM client separately from the game folder.

Because those layers are different, copying NPCTalk files into a FiveM plugins folder is not a supported conversion. The absence of a FiveM resource or server instructions means direct multiplayer support is unverified. If a user reports that a particular build works, treat that result as an anecdotal experiment tied to that exact client, server and versions.
What about FiveM’s single-player mode?
FiveM’s customized single-player mode still runs through the FiveM client, not the ordinary GTA V Story Mode executable. It therefore inherits FiveM’s plugin locations, save requirements and compatibility rules. The NPCTalk example does not say that it can attach to this client, and the project does not document a FiveM-specific hook.

The safest conclusion is to use the official Story Mode example for NPCTalk and regard FiveM single-player as unsupported until the project publishes explicit instructions. Do not move a working Story Mode hook into FiveM’s application-data directory and assume equivalent behavior; an outdated or incompatible plugin can crash the client, and a server can disable plugins regardless of whether the code works locally.
Will NPCTalk work with a modded GTA V installation?
Modded Story Mode is the most plausible non-default case because the NPCTalk example is itself a mod-capable Windows setup. Compatibility still depends on details the project does not reduce to a single checkbox: your GTA V build, the hook mechanism, launcher, script-loader version, graphics or total-conversion mods, and the order in which they load.

Checks before adding NPCTalk
- Identify the game edition. GTA V Legacy and GTA V Enhanced are separate installs. A hook or script compiled for one edition should not be presumed to work with the other.
- Record the build number. Compare your current game build with the build assumed by the NPCTalk release and its hook instructions. An automatic game update can invalidate a previously working setup.
- Inventory existing hooks. Multiple script loaders, trainers and injectors can conflict. Disable nonessential components while testing NPCTalk so a crash has a smaller set of possible causes.
- Use a dedicated profile. Keep modified Story Mode files, saves and launch shortcuts away from the profile used for GTA Online.
- Back up before every change. Preserve clean copies of the game directory and saves so you can return to a known-good state.
A low-risk test sequence
- Launch the modded game with all optional mods disabled and confirm that plain Story Mode loads.
- Enable the required hook and NPCTalk only, then test microphone input with one nearby NPC.
- Re-enable other mods one at a time, restarting between changes. Stop when the failure returns and check that mod’s build and load-order requirements.
- After a game update, repeat the minimal test rather than assuming the previous combination remains valid.
No complete NPCTalk compatibility matrix is published for every mod list, launcher or build. A successful result on one computer is evidence for that combination only, not a guarantee for a different edition or collection of scripts.

Do not launch GTA Online with a script hook installed. NPCTalk’s own rule forbids injecting into online games with anti-cheat, and it says it does not bypass anti-cheat, DRM or ownership checks. Rockstar’s separate Story Mode mod-policy guidance does not turn an online session into a safe place for single-player hooks.

Use separate game files or a launcher profile when possible, remove or disable the hook before starting an online session, and verify that the game has returned to an unmodified state. If you cannot confidently establish that separation, do not launch the online service from that installation.

Microphone setup and voice quality
NPCTalk’s documented interaction is microphone-driven, so audio troubleshooting should come before changing game files. Set the USB or other microphone as the Windows input device, grant desktop microphone permission, and check that the input meter responds to normal speech. Push-to-talk can reduce background conversations and fan noise; open mic is closer to the published demonstration but requires a quieter room.
The repository includes an internal voice-evaluation table with voice-match and word-error measurements. Those figures are project-reported measurements, not a dated independent benchmark, so they should not be treated as universal accuracy or latency guarantees across microphones, characters, languages or game builds.
