Yes, full online play in Nintendo Switch Sports requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without one, Nintendo allows a limited trial competition against computer-controlled opponents when you choose “Play Globally.” That restriction applies to online features; it does not mean the entire game is unplayable without a membership.
What you can do online without a membership
Nintendo Support says players without a membership can select Play Globally and enter a trial competition against computer competitors. This is a limited trial, not access to full online play with other players. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for the game-specific rule.

Nintendo’s official game site also says that a Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for online features. The membership requirement is therefore about online access, not a requirement to launch or own the game.
What about local play and LAN?
Nintendo’s membership guidance does not provide a complete list of every mode available locally without a subscription. Its separate LAN play instructions describe wired local network play with up to four consoles and up to eight total players when two players use each console. Those setup details do not establish whether a membership is or is not required, so do not treat LAN play as confirmed membership-free based on them alone.

Does voice chat require Nintendo Switch Online?
For voice chat in Play with Friends through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, Nintendo says a membership is required. Nintendo also states that accounts for users under 13 cannot use that app-based voice-chat feature. This is a separate condition from whether the game’s other online features are available.
If you just subscribed but online play is still unavailable
Nintendo notes that a newly started membership may take a short time to register in Nintendo Switch Sports. If it does not appear to have taken effect, wait briefly, close the software, and reopen it before trying again.

Why this requirement is game-specific
Nintendo’s general Nintendo Switch Online service FAQ says membership is required for cooperative and competitive online features in many Switch games, and that game-specific requirements are identified in Nintendo eShop and on product pages. For Nintendo Switch Sports, the game-specific FAQ is the clearest source for the online requirement and the limited membership-free trial.
