Google lists Face Unlock on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 7 or later, including Pixel Fold. The listed generations are not continuous: Google’s current guidance does not include Pixel 5, Pixel 6, or Pixel 6a. Pixel 8 and later, including Fold, can also use Face Unlock for supported app sign-ins and purchase approvals.
Which Pixel models support Face Unlock?
Google’s Pixel support guidance names the Pixel 4 and Pixel 7 or later phones, including Pixel Fold. That means the supported-generation rule has a gap after Pixel 4; it is not every Pixel released since then.

| Pixel model or generation | Face Unlock support in Google’s guidance |
|---|---|
| Pixel 4 | Supported for phone unlock. |
| Pixel 5, Pixel 6 and Pixel 6a | Not included in Google’s listed supported models; do not assume these phones have Face Unlock. |
| Pixel 7 and later | Supported for phone unlock, including Pixel Fold. |
| Pixel 8 and later, including Fold | Can also use Face Unlock for supported app sign-ins and purchase approvals; availability depends on the app or payment flow. |
Google’s help page describes Pixel Tablet as well, but it is not a phone. For an individual device, confirm the exact model in Settings and check whether Face Unlock appears in its security or device-unlock settings. Google says menu wording and setup steps can vary by device. See Google’s screen-lock instructions and Face Unlock help.

What can Face Unlock do on Pixel 8 and later?
On Pixel 8 and later, including Fold, Face Unlock can do more than unlock the phone: Google documents its use for supported app sign-ins and purchase approvals. This does not mean every app or payment method accepts face verification. Google’s Face Unlock instructions explain the feature, while its Pixel hardware specifications list model-specific capabilities, including Face Unlock on Pixel 9.

- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
Security and reliability limits
Google cautions that “Face Unlock may be less secure than a strong PIN, pattern or password.” It warns that a lookalike, including an identical sibling, or someone holding the phone up to the enrolled person’s face may be able to unlock it. Consider your threat model and keep a strong backup screen lock.
- Recognition can fail in poor lighting or when you wear sunglasses or a face covering.
- Google recommends also setting up Fingerprint Unlock for situations where face recognition is unreliable.
What happens to your face data?
Google says the face images used during enrollment are not stored. A face model is stored securely on the phone, remains on the device, and is used only for Face Unlock. Google’s help page states that the model “isn’t shared with any other Google services or apps.” Read Google’s explanation of Face Unlock and face data for its full account.
