Does Nifty 50’s Market-Cap Composition Make It Trail Broader Earnings Growth?

Nifty 50’s free-float market-cap weighting shapes index influence, but it does not guarantee slower earnings growth. FY26 and Q1 FY26 figures show why the answer depends on the comparison.

Sometimes, but not consistently—and market-cap composition alone does not explain the gap. Nifty 50 weights companies by free-float market capitalisation, while broader earnings comparisons measure profits across a larger group. In FY26, reported aggregate profit growth was faster for the Nifty 500 than for the Nifty 50; in Q1 FY26, however, median profit growth and aggregate growth told different stories. The answer depends on the period, the earnings measure and which companies are included in the comparison.

What does Nifty 50’s market-cap weighting mean?

Nifty 50 is weighted by free-float market capitalisation: companies with a greater value of shares available for trading generally have more influence on the index. NSE says this methodology has applied since June 26, 2009. As of March 30, 2026, Nifty 50 represented about 53.73% of NSE’s free-float market capitalisation. That figure describes market coverage, not the index’s share of company profits.

This distinction matters because index weights and earnings growth are different things. A large company can have a substantial index weight but grow profits slowly, while a smaller company can post fast growth from a lower starting base. Nifty 50’s weighting method can therefore affect how its companies influence index results, but it does not by itself establish why earnings growth differs between the index and a broader group.

NSE describes the Nifty 50 as “a well diversified 50 stock index and it represent important sectors of the economy” in its index overview.

What do the earnings comparisons show?

The figures change with the period and metric. Aggregate PAT (profit after tax) growth totals profits across the companies in a group; median PAT growth describes the middle company’s growth rate. Neither should be confused with an index’s market-cap coverage or its share of total profits.

Period and comparison Reported result What it measures
Q1 FY26: Nifty 500 vs Nifty 500 excluding Nifty 50 Aggregate PAT growth was 13.2% vs 11.4%. Aggregate profit growth; the first group includes Nifty 50, the second removes it.
Q1 FY26: Nifty 50 vs Nifty Midcap 150 Median PAT growth was 9.9% vs 11.9%. Median constituent growth, not aggregate group profits.
FY26: Nifty 500 vs Nifty 50 Aggregate PAT growth was 15.4% vs 9.1%. Full-year aggregate profit growth; the Nifty 500 includes Nifty 50.
FY17–FY26: Nifty 500 excluding Nifty 50 vs Nifty 50 Reported PAT CAGR was 16.9% vs 12.5%. Compounded annual growth over the stated ten-fiscal-year period.

The Q1 FY26 figures come from NSE’s earnings review. The FY26 growth rates and FY17–FY26 CAGRs are NSE data reported by The Economic Times; they should be read as reported figures for those periods, not as a permanent relationship.

Why can aggregate and median growth tell different stories?

A group’s aggregate growth depends heavily on the profits of its largest contributors and on how their profits change. Median growth gives each constituent a place in the ranking, so a few very large companies do not dominate it in the same way. In Q1 FY26, Nifty 500 aggregate PAT growth exceeded growth for Nifty 500 excluding Nifty 50, while the reported median for Nifty 50 was below the Nifty Midcap 150 median. These results are not contradictory: they describe different summaries and, in one case, different universes.

NSE’s Q1 FY26 review also said the Nifty 50 contributed 60% of overall year-on-year PAT growth in that quarter. That statement describes its contribution to incremental growth at that time; it does not mean Nifty 50 had 60% of all profits or that it will lead in later periods.

Has Nifty 50’s share of broader-market profits fallen?

NSE’s Q3 FY26 review put Nifty 50’s share of Nifty 500 profits at about 51%, down from 54% in FY25, and identified mid-cap companies as driving the wider earnings contribution. A profit share is a measure of the level of profits attributable to the group, not its growth rate. A group can retain a large share of profits while growing more slowly than other companies.

The distinction helps explain why market-cap coverage, profit share and growth rates must not be treated as interchangeable. Nifty 50’s 53.73% share of NSE free-float market capitalisation on March 30, 2026, for example, is not directly comparable with its roughly 51% share of Nifty 500 profits in Q3 FY26: the figures use different denominators and dates.

Does the pattern continue in later periods?

Reported Q1 FY27 analyst commentary showed aggregate PAT growth of 21% for the NSE 500, 16% for large caps, 31% for mid-caps and 29% for small caps. The same commentary attributed about half of incremental PAT to Metals, BFSI and IT. These are analyst-reported cohort and contributor figures, not an official NSE publication; they indicate that leadership can vary by size category and sector.

Sector mix is one reason a broad index and a smaller set of large companies may diverge. NSE Indices’ 2026 white paper notes differences between Nifty 50 sector exposure and the wider listed NSE universe, including relatively higher Financial Services exposure in Nifty 50. That is a potential source of different earnings outcomes, not proof that sector weights caused any particular growth gap.

So, why might Nifty 50 trail—and what can the data establish?

Possible contributors include the greater influence of large, free-float-weighted constituents, differences in sector exposure, profit changes at individual companies and the chosen comparison period. The cited results establish that Nifty 500 aggregate PAT grew faster than Nifty 50 in FY26 and that the Nifty 50 profit share of Nifty 500 declined between FY25 and Q3 FY26. They do not quantify how much of either result was caused by market-cap weighting rather than company or sector performance.

Nor is “Nifty 50 trails broader earnings growth” true for every measure or quarter. In Q1 FY26, the Nifty 500’s aggregate growth was above the ex-Nifty 50 group’s, and Nifty 50 supplied a larger share of overall year-on-year PAT growth, even as its median growth was below the Nifty Midcap 150’s. Always check the period, whether the figure is aggregate or median, and whether the broader index includes Nifty 50.
