U.S. soccer is growing, but the strongest recent figures measure players of all ages—not youth enrollment. The clearest case for investment is therefore in the programs and infrastructure that can turn interest into affordable, recurring play, not in an assumed youth-market valuation or guaranteed return.
Is youth soccer growing in the U.S.?
The evidence points to a larger and expanding soccer audience, but it does not establish a national youth-only growth rate. The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) reported record U.S. participation in 2025 and seven consecutive years of outdoor soccer growth through that year. Its participation totals include adults as well as children, so they should not be described as youth registrations.

| Measure | SFIA figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor soccer | 16.8 million U.S. participants in 2025, up 15.8% from 2024 | All-age participation, not youth-only enrollment |
| Indoor soccer | 6.6 million U.S. participants in 2025, up 10.5% from 2024 | All-age participation |
SFIA also reports that children ages 6–12 were the largest single outdoor age group, with 5.5 million participants in 2025. Yet some of the fastest growth was among adults: outdoor participation among Americans ages 45–54 rose 247% from 2018 to 2025. Female outdoor participation increased 66% from 2018 to 2025, and Hispanic outdoor participation increased 60% from 2022 to 2025. These are useful signs of a broadening sport, but none alone demonstrates a corresponding increase in youth registrations or identifies what caused it. How many kids play organized soccer?
US Youth Soccer says its network registers 2.5 million players annually and includes 54 member state associations and 10,000 clubs and leagues. It also reports nearly one million administrators, coaches, and volunteers. These figures describe US Youth Soccer’s own network, not a census of every child playing soccer in the country; other programs and organizations are outside that stated scope. Its programs span recreational and competitive play, and families can use the organization’s state-association links to find local options. (US Youth Soccer, About US Youth Soccer)

Will the 2026 World Cup grow youth soccer?
It could help attract attention and inspire new players, but a lasting youth-participation effect is not yet established. SFIA’s review of earlier tournaments cautions against assuming an immediate jump: outdoor participation fell 1.1% during 2014, while outdoor and indoor participation fell 4.4% and 3.1%, respectively, during 2018. SFIA reports that participation increased in 2023 after the 2022 tournament, suggesting any effect may arrive later rather than during the event itself.
The 2026 World Cup’s summer timing and U.S. host setting may align tournament inspiration with favorable conditions for playing, but that is a possibility, not a forecast. Future youth-specific registration and retention data will be needed to tell whether interest becomes sustained play. (SFIA, 2026; SFIA 2026 State of Soccer Takeaways)

The Innovate to Grow figures describe a specific 2023–2024 funding cycle, not an open application opportunity. Its announced eligibility criteria included U.S. Soccer membership, a one-to-three-year program duration, a financial contribution from the member or partner, and alignment with player-development, coaching, and safety philosophies. At Soccer Forward Foundation’s launch, U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said, “The launch of the Soccer Forward Foundation represents our unwavering commitment to removing barriers and creating opportunities to ensure soccer is a welcoming and accessible sport for everyone in America.” That statement describes the federation’s intent; it is not an independently measured impact finding. U.S. Soccer’s 2025 “In Service to Soccer” framework likewise describes a member-focused strategy to bring soccer everywhere, achieve more soccer success, and unlock investment. The Soccer Will figures are a dated campaign status, not a current balance or assurance the target will be reached. Named supporters in the announcement document campaign backing, not an open sponsorship, grant, or affiliate opportunity. (U.S. Soccer Foundation, January 29, 2026)

What should an investor or funder evaluate?
Participation growth only becomes durable when organizations can make room for players and keep programs accessible. Before comparing a community project, grant proposal, facility, or youth-soccer business, look at how it addresses these practical constraints:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Access and affordability: Check family costs, equipment availability, travel distance, and whether the program serves communities with limited access.
- Capacity: Establish how many playable field hours, league places, coaches, and referees are available. Interest cannot become recurring participation if programs cannot accommodate players.
- Participation model: Distinguish casual access, recreational leagues, competitive club pathways, after-school programming, and mini-pitch or community models; they serve different needs.
- Evidence and duration: Ask for a baseline, ages served, reporting period, retention information, and a clear distinction between participation counts and broader youth-development outcomes.
- Funding and accountability: Clarify whether support comes from grants, sponsorship, philanthropy, earned revenue, or match funding, and who owns and maintains any facility.
These are decision questions drawn from the barriers and grant criteria described by SFIA, U.S. Soccer, and the U.S. Soccer Foundation—not a published universal investment scorecard. The available figures do not establish a comprehensive youth-soccer market size, national spending total, growth forecast, or expected return. Participation counts are not revenue, and program announcements should not be treated as financial performance data.
What is holding youth soccer back?
SFIA identifies field availability, league capacity, equipment affordability, coach availability, and access in lower-income communities as factors that can constrain continued growth. Those limits matter because rising interest alone does not provide additional field time, qualified coaches, or affordable ways to participate. The funding programs described above target some of these needs, but their announcements do not establish that barriers have been resolved nationally. (SFIA, 2026; SFIA 2026 State of Soccer Takeaways)
What do families need to get started?
Start by checking recreational and competitive options through a local US Youth Soccer state association, then ask the club or program about age groups, costs, schedules, equipment, and any required registration. A youth soccer ball can help a child practice, but families should first check the age- and program-appropriate size and ask what the organization supplies. Buying equipment should not be treated as a prerequisite when affordability is one of the access concerns identified by SFIA. (US Youth Soccer; SFIA, 2026)
