LocalSend can move files between Apple, Android, Windows and Linux devices without an internet connection, but it still depends on a local network that lets those devices communicate. That is the tradeoff behind its appeal as an AirDrop alternative: it works across more platforms, while AirDrop’s documented peer-to-peer connection does not depend on a Wi-Fi access point.
What LocalSend does—and what “without internet” means
LocalSend is a free, open-source app for sharing files and messages with nearby devices over a local network. Its official site lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS support; the project repository also links to a Fire OS distribution. Check the current release’s compatibility information before installing, since operating-system requirements can change.

The app does not need internet service to transfer files, according to its documentation. But “no internet required” does not mean “no network required”: the devices still need a usable path to one another. A local router or hotspot may provide that path even when it has no internet connection, although the available documentation does not establish that every device combination or hotspot mode will work reliably.

LocalSend supports photos, videos, documents, text and other file types. The official site says received files go to Downloads by default, and that users can change the destination in settings. It also says an account or login is not required.

Why LocalSend may feel less seamless than AirDrop
LocalSend’s key dependency is whether devices can reach one another on the local network. A router can prevent that communication even when both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi—for example, when access-point or client isolation is enabled on a guest network. Firewalls can also block LocalSend traffic. The project documentation identifies incoming TCP and UDP port 53317 and notes that firewall configuration may be needed.
AirDrop uses a different connection model. Apple documents Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for discovery, followed by a direct peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection between devices. That connection does not use an internet connection or wireless access point. AirDrop therefore avoids the particular router-isolation problem that can stop LocalSend, though it is an Apple feature rather than a cross-platform transfer app.

What to check when devices cannot find each other
If LocalSend does not show a nearby device, check the network path before assuming the app or device is incompatible. The project documentation flags several possible blockers:
- Confirm both devices can communicate on the same local network. Being connected to the same Wi-Fi name may not be enough if the router isolates clients.
- Check guest-network or access-point isolation. Ask the network administrator or review router settings if you are on a guest, school or workplace network.
- Allow LocalSend through the firewall. Its repository identifies incoming TCP and UDP port 53317; how to add an exception depends on the operating system and firewall.
- Review operating-system permissions. The project specifically notes local-network permission on macOS and iOS. On Windows, it warns that a network configured as Public may be more restrictive.
- For slow transfers, consider the connection band. LocalSend’s project guidance suggests trying 5 GHz. That is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee of faster transfers; speed also depends on the network and devices.
These checks address common causes documented by the project, but they cannot guarantee a fix on a managed or restricted network.

What the security claims do—and do not—show
LocalSend says its communication uses HTTPS, with TLS certificates generated for each device, and its site offers optional PIN verification. Apple documents TLS encryption for AirDrop and identity checks associated with Contacts Only mode. These are descriptions of security mechanisms, not independent audits or proof that one option is categorically safer in every situation.
Encryption in transit does not prevent every mistake or exposure. Before accepting a transfer, check that the recipient is the intended device; on a network where unfamiliar devices are reachable, be thoughtful about what you send and which requests you accept.

When LocalSend is the better fit
LocalSend is useful when the devices you need to connect do not all belong to Apple’s ecosystem, or when you want a local transfer without signing into an account. Its cross-platform support solves a different problem from AirDrop’s direct Apple-to-Apple sharing.

The available official sources do not provide comparable speed or reliability measurements, so they do not establish a universal performance winner.
