Yes—usually for at least a short period, and sometimes for much longer. Uploading a photo, scan or screenshot gives the AI provider a copy to process. That copy may remain in chat history, file storage, safety logs or human-review systems even when it is not used to train a general-purpose model. Whether an image or its conversation can improve a model depends on the provider, product (consumer, business or API), region and privacy controls.
Deleting a conversation is not always the same as deleting every separately stored file or a copy already selected for safety review. The safest approach for a sensitive, one-off image is to use a temporary or incognito mode, disable activity-based improvement controls, avoid feedback containing the image, and remove both the conversation and any attached file.

Storage, processing and training are different things
Three data practices are often confused:
- Processing: the service receives the image, analyzes pixels or text and generates a reply. Processing is necessary for an image question to work.
- Retention: the provider keeps the image or conversation for a period after the reply, commonly for chat history, synchronization, abuse prevention, debugging or legal compliance.
- Model improvement: the image, conversation or a de-identified derivative may be selected to improve future systems. This is a separate use and can have a different opt-out, retention period and human-review policy.
A service can therefore retain an image without using it to train a general model, or use a de-identified conversation for improvement after the visible chat has been deleted. “Not used for training” does not mean “never stored.”
There is no reliable industry-wide retention average. The periods below are provider-published windows for particular products and settings, not a statistic about every multimodal AI service.

What happens to images in ChatGPT?
OpenAI states that regular and archived chats remain saved to your account until you delete them. That includes a conversation containing an uploaded image. When you delete a chat, OpenAI schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, except when the data has already been de-identified or must be retained longer for security or legal obligations.
Temporary Chat keeps the conversation out of your visible history, but it is not an immediate-wipe mechanism. OpenAI may retain copies for up to 30 days for safety. Use this mode for a lower-retention option, not as a promise that no server-side copy exists.
Files can outlive the conversation
ChatGPT can save uploads in a separate Library. Deleting the chat that used a file does not necessarily delete that Library item. Files attached to a custom GPT or a project remain until you delete the relevant GPT, project or file. If an image is sensitive, check each storage location rather than relying on chat deletion alone.

Practical deletion sequence
- Delete the conversation containing the image.
- Open the Library and remove the uploaded file there.
- Check any custom GPT or project that received the file and delete the file or the container.
- Use Temporary Chat for future one-off images and review the account’s data-control settings before uploading.
How Google Gemini handles uploaded photos and screenshots
Google describes an uploaded image as information supplied in a prompt. Gemini uses Google Lens technology to understand visual content and read text. That explains the processing step; it does not by itself determine how long the image or conversation is retained.
Keep Activity and human review
When Gemini Apps Activity (Keep Activity) is on, a photo or video shared through the upload feature, or a screen action, may be used to improve Google services. Google says some material can be reviewed by human reviewers. Gemini Apps Activity has an 18-month default auto-delete period; the account holder can change it to 3 months, 36 months or indefinite retention.
Human-reviewed chats have a separate qualification: Google says they can be retained for up to three years and are not necessarily removed when the user deletes activity. This is why deleting an activity record cannot be treated as a guarantee that every review copy disappears.

Temporary chats and Keep Activity off
Temporary chats, and chats made while Keep Activity is off, are retained for 72 hours for providing responses and safety functions. Google says temporary chats are not used to train its AI models. The 72-hour safety copy still means the image is transmitted and held temporarily, so avoid uploading material that cannot leave your device.

Anthropic says a deleted consumer Claude conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend storage within 30 days. That policy covers the conversation in which an image was supplied, subject to the provider’s stated legal and security needs.
Model-improvement permission changes the timeline
If a consumer user allows Anthropic to use chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, data may enter de-identified model-training pipelines for up to five years. Anthropic also describes improvement use when a conversation is flagged for safety review or when the user explicitly opts in. De-identification reduces direct account association but does not mean the material is instantly removed from all training systems.

Incognito is a narrower exception
Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when the account-wide improvement setting is enabled. Commercial products, including Claude for Work and the Anthropic API, operate under separate terms and default training rules. Confirm the contract and workspace policy before sending customer photos, medical images or confidential documents through a business integration.

Microsoft separates Copilot Vision from images uploaded in ordinary chat. Vision screenshots and camera images are processed to answer the request and are not stored after the session ends. Microsoft’s consumer privacy information also says those Vision images are not used to train AI models or personalize the experience.

An image sent through a normal Copilot chat, or used for image generation or editing, follows a different path. Microsoft may retain that upload for up to 30 days or until you delete it. Therefore, choosing the camera or screen-sharing Vision feature is materially different from attaching a file to a regular conversation.

Microsoft 365 Copilot has separate enterprise handling. Microsoft describes those conversations as not used to train Copilot’s generative models, but an organization’s retention, audit, eDiscovery and administrator policies can still govern where the conversation is stored and who can access it.
Consumer, work and API accounts are not interchangeable
A provider’s consumer privacy page does not automatically describe its business workspace or API. Enterprise administrators may configure retention, legal holds, audit access and regional storage. API terms can prohibit using customer content for training by default while still allowing logging for abuse detection or debugging, depending on the service and contract.
Before uploading a company screenshot or a customer photograph, identify the account type in use: personal consumer account, employer-managed workspace, enterprise tenant or developer API. Ask the administrator or read the applicable terms rather than assuming the most permissive consumer setting applies.

How to minimize exposure before you upload
- Remove unnecessary detail. Crop names, faces, addresses, QR codes, account numbers and document metadata. Redaction is safer than asking the model to ignore sensitive text after upload.
- Select the least-retentive mode. Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Gemini temporary chat or Keep Activity off, Claude Incognito, or Copilot Vision when those modes match your task. Each still requires transmission for processing.
- Turn off improvement controls. Disable Gemini Keep Activity and any equivalent setting that permits service improvement. Review feedback settings as well; submitting a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written comment can attach sensitive content to a review workflow.
- Check the product tier. Confirm whether the account is consumer, work, enterprise or API, and whether an administrator has applied a longer retention or legal hold.
- Delete every copy. Remove the chat, then inspect separate libraries, projects, custom assistants, generated-image galleries and workspace folders.
- Do not upload what must remain strictly local. Government identity documents, unreleased source code, intimate images and regulated records may require a tool approved by your organization or an offline workflow.
What deletion can and cannot guarantee
Deletion normally starts a provider’s scheduled removal process; it does not necessarily erase data instantly from backups, abuse-prevention systems or de-identified training pipelines. A provider may also retain material when a law, security investigation or safety process requires it. Human reviewers can create an additional retention path, as Google’s three-year window for reviewed Gemini chats illustrates.
Conversely, a short retention period does not mean zero risk. The image has still been transmitted, processed and potentially exposed to account compromise, an authorized reviewer or an administrator during that period. Treat temporary modes as risk reduction, not as a confidentiality guarantee.
A quick decision guide
- Routine, non-sensitive image: A normal chat is generally adequate; delete the conversation when finished if you do not need the history.
- One-off personal image: Choose a temporary or incognito mode, disable improvement activity and remove any separately saved file.
- Work or customer material: Use an approved enterprise or API configuration and verify its written retention and training terms.
- Highly regulated or irreplaceable material: Keep it out of a consumer multimodal chatbot unless your legal, security and compliance requirements explicitly allow the service.
Bottom line
Multimodal AI services usually store an uploaded image or the conversation containing it for some period, but storage does not automatically mean model training. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot each separate history, safety retention, human review and improvement use in different ways. The dependable privacy habit is to choose the product tier and temporary setting deliberately, turn off improvement where available, delete chats and separate files, and assume that a short-lived safety copy may exist even after you press Delete.
