A 2023 laboratory study found that microwave heating released microplastics and nanoplastics from the plastic containers and reusable food pouches it tested. That shows particle release can occur under experimental conditions; it does not show that a typical reheated meal contains the study’s highest counts or that microwaving leftovers causes illness. The FDA says current evidence does not demonstrate that microplastic or nanoplastic levels detected in food pose a human-health risk, while noting that major measurement and knowledge gaps remain.
What the study found about heating food in plastic
In a 2023 study published in Environmental Science & Technology, researchers tested plastic containers and reusable food pouches with deionized water and 3% acetic acid as food simulants. They compared microwave heating with refrigeration and room-temperature storage. Among those tested scenarios, microwave heating produced the greatest particle release. The researchers also found particle release during refrigeration and room-temperature storage over six months.

In some tested conditions, containers released as many as 4.22 million microplastic particles and 2.11 billion nanoplastic particles from one square centimeter of plastic area within three minutes. These are experimental maximums for the study’s particular samples and conditions—not a count per serving, a typical estimate for household leftovers, or a result that can be applied to every plastic container. The polyethylene-based pouch released more particles than the polypropylene containers tested, but that comparison does not establish how other products or materials perform. Read the study in Environmental Science & Technology.

Particle release, a person’s exposure, and a demonstrated health effect are three different things. The study establishes release from the products it tested. It also modeled exposure estimates of 20.3 ng/kg-day for infants drinking microwaved water and 22.1 ng/kg-day for toddlers consuming microwaved dairy from polypropylene containers. Those are model results, not measurements of individual children’s intake and not evidence that those exposures cause harm.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The study included laboratory cell-viability testing using extracted particles at a stated high concentration. That is not a clinical outcome in people and does not establish that routine reheating damages consumers’ kidneys or other organs.
The FDA’s current position is that available scientific evidence does not demonstrate that microplastic or nanoplastic levels detected in foods pose a human-health risk. The agency also says effects are not sufficiently understood and that further research is needed. It points to difficulties including inconsistent definitions, reference materials, sample preparation, validated detection and characterization methods, and quality controls. Those gaps make studies hard to compare and limit robust risk assessment. See the FDA’s summary of microplastics and nanoplastics in foods.

What “microwave-safe” does—and does not—tell you
The FDA’s food-contact materials framework considers whether a material is authorized for its intended use, migration under intended conditions, and toxicological data. But the agency does not say a microwave-safe label guarantees zero particle release. The laboratory study found release in its tested scenarios; it does not establish that every labeled container releases particles at the same rate or that such release creates a proven health risk.
Microwave-safe instructions are still important for using a container as intended. The FDA says microwaves pass through materials such as glass, paper and plastic to heat food; the food can then heat the container, and some plastic containers can melt. Use cookware made for microwave ovens and follow both the microwave and container instructions. Read the FDA’s microwave-oven guidance.

How to reheat leftovers if you want to avoid heating them in plastic
- Transfer the food. Put leftovers in a microwave-safe glass or ceramic dish before reheating. This is a practical option for avoiding direct heating in plastic, not a medically required step or a proven way to eliminate all microplastic exposure.
- Check the dish and appliance instructions. Use cookware specifically made for microwave ovens and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
- Do not microwave food on melamine dinnerware. The FDA says foods and drinks should not be heated in melamine-based dinnerware in a microwave. Plastic tableware not labeled microwave-safe should not be used to heat food or drinks. These cautions concern safe use of the wares; they do not mean ordinary microwave radiation contaminates food. See the FDA’s guidance on melamine tableware.
